Chapter 2

Penulis: Lucky Enzo
Sabrina said, "Well, both you and Shane know that I don't like sweet stuff, so you can just have it."

I was holding back tears as I pushed the cake in her direction. Looking her earnestly in the eye, I said slowly, "You can have anything you like."

Sabrina didn't understand what I was getting at. Grinning, she walked up to me and gave me a hug. "What did I ever do to deserve such a wonderful best friend like you?"

Shane had just come out of the shower. He sounded a little frustrated as he pulled Sabrina away from me. "I told you to share the cake with her, not ditch the cake and eat her."

With Shane grabbing her by the collar and pulling her away, Sabrina struggled to turn and look at me, shouting, "You may be the boss at the law firm, but this is my best friend's house. You're just a homewrecker who came between us!"

Shane was in his loungewear, carelessly drying his hair with a towel. He let out a deep chuckle. "Your best friend is my wife, Ms. Langford."

Sabrina retorted, "That's not how the law works. Common-law marriage is not recognized here. You two haven't even gotten your marriage license, so you're just living together at best! You can't call her your wife!"

Shane tilted his head and glanced at her, the surprise on his face slowly turning into a smile. "Would you look at that? I thought you were just the company mascot, but you actually learned a thing or two."

These days, I had gotten used to their flirtatious bickering.

I felt proud at first, but by the time I realized that something was off, it was already too late.

Shane was obsessed with his image, and he could never let outsiders see him looking anything less than perfect. Even at home, I only saw him in his loungewear in our second year of living together.

And now, he had already considered Sabrina to be someone in his inner circle.

After arguing with Sabrina for a while, Shane suddenly remembered something and looked at me. "I noticed you brought out the big suitcase. Are you going on a business trip overseas?"

Before I could reply, Sabrina had already made her way over to us. She was beaming as she shouted, "Oh, our beautiful and kind Ms. Kennelly! Have you finally given in and agreed to our team building at a five-star island resort in Benedives?"

A month ago, the topic of choosing a venue for the team building came up during the admin team meeting. Sabrina had raised her hand high and suggested, "Let's go to Benedives! I want to swim with a whale shark! Let's stay in the fancy rooms where you can go down a slide right into the ocean!"

Staying in a five-star island resort would blow our budget right through the atmosphere.

Everyone laughed at how naive she was.

I immediately rejected the idea at the meeting.

Afterward, Sabrina came over to Shane and me, begging, "Is there really nothing we can do about going to Benedives? I even told my friends that you guys would definitely agree to it! Please, please, please! I'll work super hard to earn enough funds for the trip!"

Shane shook his head helplessly, but there was a twinkle in his eyes. "Come on, Sabrina. We'd all be broke if we counted on you to bring in the money. You'd be a huge help just by staying in your lane and out of trouble."

After Sabrina left, I calmly went over the company's financial situation with Shane. "Imagine all the bonuses we could've paid with the kind of money used for a 30-person trip to a five-star island resort!

"Shane, Sabrina is just like a child sometimes. Don't take her too seriously."

He was reading a merger and acquisition agreement back then. He didn't even look up as he answered, "Got it."

But now that it was brought up again, Shane responded as if it were the most natural thing in the world, "Go ahead, then. I'll allow it."

Shane had come from a poor background. All his life, he had been extremely strict with every single expense he made.

The only exception in his life where he had ignored the price tag was when he spent all his savings on the diamond ring for me.

And now, because of Sabrina, there was a second exception.

Sabrina jumped in joy and danced around the room for a while.

I wanted to say something, but since I was about to resign, I figured I no longer had any involvement in matters regarding the law firm.

Shane probably noticed my silence. Turning his gaze back at me, he asked, "So, where exactly are you going?"

I thought for a while and then smiled. "I'm going wherever you want me to go."

He had already pushed me away in his heart. So, I would go somewhere far away from him.

At that point, I had already lost my patience."Shane." Setting down my cup, I interrupted him, "Are you telling me all this to make me feel better or to make yourself feel better?"Shane froze.I continued, "Getting drunk and mistaking her for me might have been the beginning, but you have made that conscious choice every single day from then on."He leaned back in the chair, looking like all the air was sucked out of his lungs.A long while later, he said in a hoarse voice, "You always see right through everything.""Thanks to you, I've also spent a few years learning things the hard way." I stood up. "Shane, since you've chosen her, just man up and treat her right."I turned around to leave."Marina," he called out to me.I paused in my tracks, but I didn't turn to face him.He continued, "If I could start over again, I wouldn't have gone to that cafe to console Sabrina in your stead."Just then, the music in the cafe shifted to a new track. For several seconds, I stood

Sabrina rubbed her eyes, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed. She was crying as messily as she used to when she was younger. "When did you get back? Why didn't you say anything?"She sniffled and took a step forward, but then she paused as if she suddenly remembered something. Gripping the fabric of her dress, she said, "I sent you so many messages, but you never replied…"I said, "I changed my number."She froze for a moment. She opened her mouth to say something, but in the end, she just asked, "Are you… cutting me out of your life?"I stared at her.For some reason, I suddenly recalled many memories.I remembered how she took my hand and led me to her house for Christmas dinner and how she told her parents that she had brought home a genius daughter for them.I remembered how we promised to treat each other's children like our own.I remembered when she said, "I'll always stay by your side."But look whose side she stayed by in the end.I closed my eyes. The emot

The climate in Fogsport, Vaeland, was quite humid. It was a stark contrast to Nordvale, where I had spent most of my life.Still, I adapted to the weather pretty quickly. In my third month there, I successfully closed a cross-border merger and acquisition case. Later, during the law firm's annual meeting, Aaron Harrington had a wine glass in his hand as he proudly sang my praises to his peers. "Our new lawyer from Centria is both highly capable and incredibly efficient!"Sparkling wine in hand, I simply flashed a smile. I didn't mention that I used to tackle the workload of five people on my own.It was also at that annual meeting where I met Lucas Hammond again.I had first met him during a project negotiation, where he was representing a multinational company with roots in Centria.Throughout the whole meeting, he was seated at the end of the long table. His suit was crisply tailored, and he never spoke more than ten sentences. However, every point he made targeted the exact fl

Shane's intuition was always spot-on.As a genius lawyer, he often won in court by relying on his almost instinctive senses to catch any vulnerabilities. He was used to it.But this time, when he rushed home, completely out of breath, he saw my empty closet and noticed my passport was missing. He could barely breathe from the pain he was feeling. He turned around and went to the living room. Then, he spotted the diamond ring lying quietly on the kitchen island. He picked it up and held it tightly in his fist. The cool surface of the ring sent shivers down his spine. He closed his eyes for a moment, then immediately rushed to the underground garage. He drove back to the law firm.My desk was already cleared out. The desk was wiped clean with not even a speck of dust on it.The trainee lawyer nearby timidly looked up at Shane, only to quickly look down again in fear after seeing his terrifyingly dark expression.Shane headed over to the HR department, walked into Ruth's office,

At the hospital, when the nurse entered the hospital room, she happened to see Shane bending over in front of Sabrina. He was blowing on her burns. The young nurse deftly treated Sabrina's burns. Then, she put on an admiring smile as she said, "Ms. Langford, your boyfriend is so nice to you. He's staying right by your side even though it's just a burn. I've seen many partners telling the patient to just rinse it with water, apply some ointment, and call it a day."Sabrina's ears went red.Showing some frustration at being misunderstood despite the countless explanations, along with a subtle hint of embarrassment, she explained, "Oh, no, I'm single. He's my best friend's boyfriend, actually!"The nurse blinked, pausing her movements for a moment. She had a look of suspicion in her eyes. "I see. Your best friend must have the patience of a saint."Sabrina didn't hear her. "What were you saying?"The nurse lowered her gaze, the look on her face darkening. She could barely hide the d

The next day, I was woken up by the smell of something burning. When I opened my eyes, I heard Sabrina's panicked screams coming from the living room. "Ah! Help! Shane! Your pan caught on fire!"By the time I pulled the blanket off me and dashed outside, the kitchen was already filled with smoke.Sabrina was holding a frying pan on fire, and she frantically flung it into the sink. It only produced even more smoke.Shane's laptop was still running on the kitchen island, but the screen had turned dark.Shane never let anyone touch that laptop. Even when I offered to clear the cache for him, he'd say, "Don't touch it. I'll do it myself."My heart sank. After a quick check to make sure Sabrina didn't suffer any severe burns, I grabbed the fire extinguisher and rushed forward to put out the fire. While I was dealing with the fire, a few drops of hot oil splattered onto my arm. I drew a sharp breath in pain.Just then, Shane hurriedly arrived at the scene.Ignoring my own injuries,
