LOGINCHAPTER 9
ROB’S POV Earlier during the meeting, Jenna had looked at me as though I’d betrayed her. But now? Her looks are now soft. No longer filled with anger. I leaned in closer. “I know we both didn’t see this coming, but I’m not walking away from this. I want this. I want us. “ The idea of spending and entire year with her kept circling around my head like a curse. Clenching my jaw hard. I muttered under my breath. “Damn it.” And ran a hand through my hair. “Rob? Are you okay?” Jenna’s voice cut through my thoughts. “Yeah yeah, I’m just remembered something I had to do at the office.”I forced a smile, to hide how irritated I was. I placed a peck on her cheek. “We need to get some rest darling” “Sure I’ll see you tomorrow. “ She waved a strand of hair out of her face as she stood hesitantly before leaving the room. “I love you” I said just as she walked out. I got home just in time for dinner. Sarah, one of the housemaids met me at the door way. Without speaking a word, she took off my jacket and hung it by the entry way. I proceeded to the dining room. The smell of food made my stomach church in realization. My parents were already seated. Silverware clinked against the fine china as they ate, poised and composed. Like royalty. I’m guessing nothing much had changed since the last time I’d been here. “Rob, we weren’t expecting you” my father said, not bothering to look up at his plate. His tone didn’t sound surprised or happy. “I wasn’t either.” “Mother, father,” I muttered, acknowledging their presence. “I’m really glad you could join us for dinner.” Mother added even though she looked at little sad. A few minutes passed and everyone look focused on their plates. The room was silent, oddly silent except for the clattering of cutlery against each other. “So, how is work?” mother asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin. I didn’t give a word, only a nod. “What about the wedding preparation?” Father cut in almost immediately. My fist clenched into a ball. as I have a careless shrug. “Under control. “ “That doesn’t sound like progress. I need something definite.” He shot me a look over his glass. “You need to start a life, a real family.“ I didn’t answer. “She’s soon to be your wife, you better start getting used to that.” I scoffed and looked away. His words made my skin crawl. And there was nothing I could do to change that. “She makes the perfect bride and a good business partner for us.” I didn’t bother to look up. He scoffed. “Aren’t you excited about that?” “As much as you’d like to ignore me, you can’t escape going through with the wedding.” He exhaled. Seemingly pleased with what he’s making me do. I hated being pushed around like a puppet. “I’m supposed to have a choice.” My voice came out loud. Fathers eyes darted into mine. “The only choice you’ve got right now is either marrying Jenna or letting the company go down in shambles.” I held back. Restraint myself from saying anything further. “O’Neil trusts us, which is why you’re the perfect person we’ve got in using that trust to our advantage .” He grasped onto my shoulders firmly. Eyes locking with mine. “This marriage is our last chance, Rob.” He continued. “Investors are pulling out, we are bleeding financially.” He didn’t blink. “Don’t you see? If this deal falls through now we're finished." “And your proposition is?” I asked coldly. Pulling away from his grasp. He leaned forward, dropping his voice into a whisper. “To love her, accept her as your wife”. I stood abruptly. The chair screeched loudly against the tiled floors. “I won’t do anymore than that, getting married to her is enough for me already .” Mother just stared at me like she wanted to say something , but held back. I knew what she was thinking. He leaned back, staring at me with narrowed eyes. “You know, very few people know who you are. For all the public knows, you’re a phantom, running a billion dollar empire.” He points aggressively to the table. I raised an eyebrow. “That won’t last forever if the company’s market value doesn’t bounce back up before the next quarter.” Great! I’ve got a year to spend with someone I don’t really care about, and now my position’s been threatened. Just great! “I’m aware of it all and I’m working on it!” My jaw tensed. He studied me for a brief moment before giving a nod. “Good, cause if this fails, we lose everything, the empire, our name, and your one chance at starting a real family.” Father added. “I know! Which is why I’ve got to keep up with this damning act.” I sat back in my chair. My nerves tensing up again every muscle. “I need some air.” I was angry. I needed to think. I stood up, walking angrily towards the balcony. My shoes make an echo with each step I take . “Cigar?” A familiar voice asked. It was Eugene, my driver. “Yes, please. What are you doing here? “I figured the dinner wouldn’t go as planned and you come out here for air as usual.” He laughed lightly. My head nodded in agreement as I took the cigar from him. Puffs of smoke filled the air, while I watched the lights twinkling from downtown distract me. “Excuse me sir, you’ve got a call”. The house maid from earlier walked in with a telephone on her ear. “Who’s that?” “I don’t know, sir” she mouthed softly before handing over the phone. “Hi, darling ” the voice over the phone sounded familiar. “Isabelle? Why didn’t you call with your phone? She giggled. “My phone died, so I decided to use the public phone at the airport.” Airport? What’s she doing at the airport? “Why are you at the airport, my love?” “Oh! That was the main reason I called. I’m back from France and I was thinking you would come pick me up.” My eyes widened in shock. She isn’t supposed to be here this soon.CHAPTER 125ROB’S POV“You’re late” I said, as cold air escaped from my mouth. As ominous as this place looked, it sure packed a lot of chill than outside. The only reason Isabelle would have picked this place was because of how closed off it was from any and everybody. Isabelle’s face appears from behind the shadows. She looked different from last week, perhaps she’d wanted me to believe her lies through her looks also. “Never has it been a problem to arrive fashionably late.” She replies with a grin. Her outfit for today looked too fashionable for just a few talk. A leopard’s skin fur coat covered at most 90 percent of her silhouette, except for the thigh high boots that refused to be outshone. I tear my gaze away from analyzing her choice of clothing even further. “Can we begin?” “Yes! Yes! Of course.”I adjust myself on a crate, shoving my hands deep into the pocket of my leather jacket. The faint feel of my fingers against the transmitter clipped to my belt reminded me of mu
CHAPTER 124ROB’S POVI’ve driven into a lot of storms but none like this. I was unsure of how exactly to feel. But I knew for sure it was now or never. I peered into phone. Exactly one hour until it was time. Sixty minutes before my fate is decided. Could this be the end of start of a world for me? A surge of adrenaline flows through me, hitting every vein with a hard punch. If only she knows what’s coming. I looked back up at the fog covered road ahead of me. The drive to Jenna’s was a plan I hadn’t given a second thought. I didn’t call ahead. Part of me was terrified that if I did, she’d immediately decline seeing me or worse, let the phone ring till I got tired. I wouldn’t be able to bear the rejection at a time like this. My hand hovered over her apartment door for about three seconds longer before I hit the door bell. Another extra minute came, but it felt like an hour before I heard sound of keys and locks opening up. The door swung open, a surprised and then disappointe
CHAPTER 123ISABELLE’S POVThe faint red glow of the alarm clock continued to buzz by the side of my vision. It didn’t bother me that I hadn’t slept yet. 3:45am and my mind was still as sharp as you would after downing an entire jar of coffee. That had been my fate for the past week. Sleep had now become luxury. No matter how many times I managed to close my eyes, she was always there. The smell of her stuffy room choked me like it was present. Her wretched face haunted me everywhere I looked. Perhaps this was a bad idea. Letting Damien resurface something I’d buried a long time ago. Because to him ‘Elena was still a fresh kill and getting enough evidence to frame Rob wouldn’t be a problem.’Walking into the bathroom, I didn’t bother turning on the overhead lights. I looked pathetic and I didn’t want to remember how ghostly I looked. My skin had gone pale and my eyes sunk into my sockets even worse than the previous week. I avoided the sight of the mirror as I scattered through
CHAPTER 122ROB’S POVThe woman at the front desk looked at us as though we were an inconvenience. The sharp sigh from her lips was enough to tell as she dropped down the piece she was knitting. Her lips pressed thin as she swung towards our direction for the second time. “I already told you, we don’t disclose information about any of our residents here. Both old and new, now if you would stop interrupting me.” I didn’t know how long we’d been standing here for, but it was long enough for my patience to start running out. “Ma’am, we just need to confirm if Elena stayed here and if she did you’d be doing us a really huge favour.”“No.” The reply came rather too quickly. “I’m sorry if you don’t leave right now, I might need to call the cops on you.”Before I knew it, Phil had already whipped out his badge. The shiny metal reflecting beneath the fluorescent lights. “We’re investigating a homicide,” he says calmly. “So you can either decide to let this go the easy way or we come back wi
CHAPTER 121ROB’S POVThe holding room smelled of dust and coffee. I sat rigidly on the metal chair, the sound of metal handcuffs clanked against each other every time I moved. Above me the almost dim fluorescent light flickered at intervals. My irritation heightened along with it. “Let’s try this again,” one of the officers glanced up at me, lazily flipping through a thin file. “I already told you everything.” I leaned back into my chair, letting out a very exhausting sigh. There was no clock in the room and I could only wonder how long I’d been here for. An hour? Two?Another officer who’d been standing at the corner of the room arms crossed inched closer, drawing out one of the chairs across from me. “What was your relationship with Elena like?”“I barely knew her.”The officer raised a brow, scoffing almost immediately. “You really expect us to believe that?”“Yes I do!” I snapped, hitting my cuffed wrists on the table. “She used to work for Isabelle and that’s it.”“And how lo
CHAPTER 120ROB’S POV“Sure you don’t want to get that?” Phil points towards the direction where my phone had been ringing for the past minute. I grunt out, stretching forward to grab the phone. I’m suprised at the caller. It’s Cassy?I couldn’t think of a proper reason for why she would be calling but one reason kept resonating in my mind. I swiped the answer button instantly. “Cassy! Uhm hi, it’s weird to see your call.” I almost cringed from embarrassment after saying that. Probably not the best idea to spew out exactly what’s on your mind. “Yeah, Rob.” A long exhale followed, almost like she was running out of breath.“Are you okay?”“Yes, yes! I know this is already awkward but it shouldn’t be me you should be worried about….” I chime in before she completes her sentence. “Is Jenna okay? What happened?”“I know I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, but I couldn’t figure out who else to call. Jenna is being irrational right now and she won’t listen to me.”I can feel my body an
CHAPTER 113ROB’S POVThey’ve both been sitting inside that little restaurant for more than an hour. I swiped a stream of sweat away from my forehead. The scorching heat that came with summer wasn’t something I was a fan of. I really wanted to go closer, to know what exactly they were meeting up f
CHAPTER 111ROB’S POVThe sharp pain shooting through my skull drives me awake earlier than I expected. My hand clutching my forehead tightly as though the pain would magically go away. Just when I’d thought I was already better last night. “You need to cut down on drinking, Rob.” I mutter quitely
CHAPTER 109JENNA’S POV“Here, take another drink.” Rob shoved yet another glass of brandy towards me. After listening to everything he had to say, I only felt an urge to keep him company. There wasn’t much I could do but watching him just gulp glass after glass wasn’t the best. Because now, he wa
CHAPTER 105ISABELLE’S POVRob stood at the entrance of the room still in his wedding suit, a bottle of alcohol in one hand while the other supported his body by the door. His eyes glistened with rage and something else. Not only did he just catch me in a compromising position, but with someone w
