Chapter Six: Sidney Bloom Arrives

Myra POV

Noah said it over coffee without any introduction. "She knew exactly where you were."

I wrapped both hands around my mug. "I know."

"That's not a mother checking on her son."

"I know that too." I stirred my coffee even though there was nothing left to stir.

He looked at me for a second. "You okay?"

"I'm fine."

He didn't push. That was the thing about Noah: he said what mattered once and then gave you space to think about it. I finished my coffee and walked back to the studio alone, turning the thought over the whole way there.

Victoria didn’t just happen to find us. She showed up at the perfect time and place, standing in the rain with her umbrella. Timing like that isn’t a coincidence. It’s planned.

I tried to remember if she’d looked surprised. She hadn't. That bothered me more than anything else because people looked surprised when they stumbled onto something. Victoria just looked like she expected it.

The studio was empty when I got there. I laid out my drawings on the corner table and got to work. For about twenty minutes, things almost seemed normal.

Then Danny walked in. He walked in without saying good morning; I didn’t either. We had moved beyond those polite gestures.

He sat down across from me in silence, opened his sketchbook, and began to draw. He acted like last night had never happened. As if his mother hadn’t stepped out of the darkness with that empty smile and taken apart the whole evening in less than a minute.

We went back to the drawings. I kept my eyes on my page, and he kept his on his.

"You left fast," he said eventually.

"I had somewhere to be."

He turned a page. "You didn't look back."

I didn't answer that. He already knew why.

An hour went by. It was real, quiet work, the kind where you stop worrying and just think. I leaned over to point out a structural problem in his elevation, but his hand was already there. We both stared at the same spot on the page, our fingers almost touching, neither of us moving.

"Load distribution," I said.

"I know."

Neither of us moved our hands.

The door opened.

She walked in the way some people enter a room, as if the room had been waiting for her. She was composed and unhurried, with a kind of put-together look that seemed effortless but was not. She spotted Danny right away, just as she always did.

"There you are." She crossed to our table. "Your phone's been off."

Danny's jaw tightened. "Sydney."

Sydney Bloom. Della mentioned her name at the gala, sharp and memorable. Meeting her in person, she was just as polished as I expected, maybe even more so.

She looked over at me. "You must be Myra." Her tone was friendly, but only just. "I've heard about the project."

"Have you," I said.

She set her hand briefly on Danny's shoulder, light and unhurried, the kind of touch that didn't need to announce itself. "Victoria wants dinner tonight. She's in the city."

Danny looked away for a second.

"I'll call her," he said.

"She'd love that." Sydney looked at the drawings between us, then back at me. "It was lovely to meet you, Myra."

She left without rushing. The door clicked shut.

I picked up my pencil. Set it down.

"She seems nice," I said.

Danny looked at me.

"I know," I said. "That was a lie."

"Myra…"

"She put her hand on your shoulder and mentioned your mother in the same breath." I kept my voice steady. "I'm not asking you to explain it. I just want to know one thing." I looked at him directly. "Last night, was it real, or was it just the rain?"

His eyes stayed on mine. “You really want the truth?"

"Yes."

"It was real."

Something in my chest loosened, just a little, but it was enough to be dangerous. I nodded and pulled my sketchbook closer. "Then finish your elevation."

He looked at me for another second. Then he started drawing, and we both worked quietly. The silence between us felt comfortable, like it didn’t need any explanation.

My phone buzzed on the table, screen down. I picked it up and turned it over.

It was an unknown number. The message was just one line.

A word of advice: Be careful what you think is real.

I stared at the message for a moment, then put my phone face-down so Danny wouldn’t see. I picked up my pencil and kept drawing.

Sydney Bloom had introduced herself just eleven minutes ago, and she already had my number. She didn’t show up at the studio by chance, either.

Around here, nobody did anything by accident.

I looked over at Danny sitting across the table. His head was down, and his pencil kept moving, not noticing the message lying face-down just a few inches from my hand. I left it there. He already had enough on his mind. So did I.

  • EVERYTHING HE OWED HER   Chapter Thirty-Four: The Heir They Erased

Myra POVSydney was already inside when we arrived. We used the side entrance at eight in the morning, just like she said. The door was unlocked, a light was on in the corridor, and Sydney was waiting outside a room I had walked past my whole childhood but never opened. The sign on the door read Estate Records, historical, though the letters were so faded they were barely visible."So you found it," I said."I actually found it three months ago." She pushed it open. "But I only realized what it was just recently."The room was small and crowded, with filing cabinets lining two walls and cardboard boxes stacked up to the ceiling. The air carried the distinct smell of paper left untouched for so long it was starting to change. A single overhead light shone down on a table in the center, where three chairs sat, clearly arranged by Sydney."Sit down," she said. "Both of you."We sat. She stayed on her feet, and I understood why."The estate archive goes back eighty years," she said. "Most

Myra POV"He took them," Danny said."He took them." I was already dressed, holding my phone, sitting on the edge of the bed and reading Margaret's text for the fourth time, hoping it might be different. The drawer was open. They're gone. Six words. Twenty-two years of evidence. Gone. "He was in her room while we were in the garden. While she was telling me everything, he was inside her locked drawer taking the only thing that could prove any of it."Danny sat up. He wasn't doing what he used to do, quickly working things out in his head and coming up with a plan before I even finished talking. He was just listening, watching my face, letting me finish."He knew about the documents," I said. "He's always known. He let her keep them because taking them would confirm he knew what to look for, and as long as they stayed hidden he could pretend they didn't exist." I stood up. "But now he knows we're getting close, so he decided it was riskier to leave them than to take them.""So he's pan

  • EVERYTHING HE OWED HER   Chapter Thirty-Two: The Empty Drawer

Myra POV"She has the documents," Danny said."She has the documents." I looked out the car window as he drove us back. The estate disappeared in the side mirror, and the gate closed behind us the way it always did, slow and certain. "Edmund gave them to her two days before he died. Which means he knew. He'd already decided what was going to happen and he made sure there'd be a record.""He trusted her with everything.""Yes." I thought about that. "And Richard has known for twenty-two years that Margaret exists, that she was Edmund's, and that she knows what happened. He brought her onto the estate just to keep an eye on her. He believed being close would give him control." I paused. "But he never realized that being close would also let her learn every part of that house better than he ever could."Danny paused for a moment. "She moved the documents the week before he searched her room.""A feeling, she said." I looked at him. "Twenty-two years of instinct. That's what kept them saf

  • EVERYTHING HE OWED HER   Chapter Thirty-One: What Margaret Admits

Margaret POV"Read it out loud," Myra said. She held the envelope without opening it. She looked at me with those eyes, Edmund's eyes, always Edmund's eyes. I knew what she was asking. She didn't want to read her father's words alone."Are you sure?" I said."Read it to me, Mom."I took the envelope from her hands. My fingers knew the paper by heart. Twenty-two years had softened its edges and deepened its folds. I'd read it countless nights before hiding it away again each morning.I opened the letter.Margaret,If you’re reading this, something has happened, and I didn’t get to say this face to face. I know that means I avoided talking about what really mattered, and I’m sorry. For the past three months, I’ve been gathering what I found in the company records. Richard doesn’t know yet, but by the time anyone finds this, he probably will.I want you to remember that nothing that happens next changes what I told you in October. I meant everything I said. No matter what the family says

  • EVERYTHING HE OWED HER   Chapter Thirty: Margaret Breaks Her Silence

Myra POVThe estate gate was open when we arrived, which never happened after eight o'clock. I grew up on this estate. The gates always closed at dusk.I jumped out of the car before Danny even brought it to a complete stop.Della met me at the side entrance. She must have been watching for us, so whatever was going on was serious enough that she wanted to stop me before I walked in."Where is she?" I said."The garden," Della spoke quietly, her voice tense. "She's been out there for an hour. She won't come in." She glanced at me, then at Danny. "Richard was here. He left twenty minutes ago.""What did he say to her?""I don't know. I wasn't in the room." She grabbed my arm as I walked by. "Myra. She's been crying. Whatever he said must have been bad."I looked at Danny once. He nodded and told me to go, saying he would handle the rest.I went. The garden was cold and dark. The November air was sharp against my face, and I knew the path to the east bench by heart. Margaret always pick

  • EVERYTHING HE OWED HER   Chapter Twenty-Night: The Original Heir

MyraDanny and I showed up at the café on Whitmore at the same time. We hadn’t planned it, but it still felt meaningful. We walked in from the cold together, shoulders nearly touching, moving in sync like people who had finally admitted they were heading the same way. Sydney was already at the back table, her coat folded, coffee waiting, and three chairs set up as if she knew we’d arrive just like this. She glanced at both of us. Her face grew calm."Good," she said. "Sit down. I have a lot to tell you, and I only want to say it once."We sat down. Danny ordered for me without asking, and he got it right. I had stopped pretending that little things like that didn’t matter. Sydney waited until the server left, then set her phone face-down on the table and looked at us. She had the steady gaze of someone who had spent six months inside a family and was finally ready to share what she’d noticed."Edmund Blancham," she said. "He was Richard's older brother, the original heir. He died abou
