Chapter 6

Zina POV

"Okay Mrs Williams, I think I know the problem." I said while taking off the gloves on my hands.

"Oh really, what's the problem?" She said while trying to sit up on the bed.

"Well ma'am, you have coccidioidomycosis, it's a common but fatal disease amongst werewolves."

I could see fear dancing around in her eyes and I don't know why I felt a little pang in my chest.

What the fuck was wrong with me? She treated me poorly. She made my life miserable, so why was I feeling pity for her?

I needed to get out of here.

"Oh, if I must ask, what are the symptoms? Could you please explain them to me."

"Of course, it is caused by the consumption or inhalation of contaminated soil. Dogs can also be infected through the skin, especially through a skin wound. Do you touch the ground often?" I asked with a look of indifference on my face.

I noticed her face light up and it made her look a bit approachable. It's not like anyone will approach anyway.

"Well yes, I have a garden. I grow the prettiest flowers and my vegetables always win the best veggies in the fair. You should come try them sometime."

I blinked down at her and to say I wasn't shocked is an understatement, this Is the longest she has ever talked to me.

Normally it was a kick, snarky comment and the dirtiest look she could muster. It's coming as quite a shock, she's talking to me nicely now.

"Ok," I started. "It seems like you have contaminated soil in your garden so that could explain you getting sick. I'm going to call up my team and we will start treatment straight away."

I leaned over to check her IV and I felt a wrinkly hand on my arm. I felt my blood boil and I was about to lash out on her but I needed to be a professional.

She may have been one of my worst nightmare, but I still need to maintain professionalism, even if it's with my stupid mother in law from hell.

I looked down at Mrs King and I slowly tried to release myself from her grip but she tightened her grip and I felt like screaming.

I looked down at her and I could see an unknown emotion in her eyes, "Mrs Williams, I'm trying to be a professional right now so I'm going to say this nicely. Let go of my arm so I can start your treatment."

She still looked up at me and smiled. She held her hand out and stroked my hair, "You look so beautiful now. I can also feel your aura, it's stronger now. It's almost like that of an alpha. You're a perfect Luna now, it's about time you came home so you're going back to our park to continue your duties."

For the second time today, I started laughing uncontrollably.

Who needs comedy when you have clowns like this.

After five minutes, I calmed down enough to finally answer her, "It seems like your condition is worse than I thought, it has eaten your brain and you have lost your mind. What made you think in your stupid head that I would come back to that park and be in the Luna."

"Because you love my son and you would do anything to get on his good books."

"You seriously believe that I want to be with your son. Ma'am we are definitely sick in the head, your son cheated on me with my best friend, he divorced me. So why should I come to a place that caused me a lot of pain?!" I exclaimed.

I was starting to get worked up but I honestly didn't care. She needs to calm the fuck down.

"What happened back then was quite unfortunate. Actually it was meant to happen because of the discriminating video that was discovered."

"I'm telling you that she wasn't me!" I bellowed.

Why doesn't anyone believe me? Yes she may have looked like me, but she wasn't me.

She coughed and more green ooze came from her system, I quickly rushed to her side and tried to give her some water. She dismissed me with a flick of her hand and I grew annoyed from her behavior.

She eventually calmed down and turned to  face again, "Anyway, you're coming back to the pack, Bella isn't exactly Luna material and she's an airhead. You're three times attractive than her and more valuable than her. You are a doctor and so you can help your pack."

"Well I'm sorry to burst your bubble but I'm not coming back to that pack. I'm going to stay here and live a normal and healthy life, away from toxicity and pain. Much like the one you and your son caused."

I was so done with this conversation, I just want to treat her and get out of here, she's not worth the energy and stress.

I felt a headache forming and I just had to ask her this before any other thing. "What exactly did I do to you? Why do you hate me this much? And why did you treat me badly? I was nothing but nice to you, I took you as a mother and I want you to like  me."

Mrs King's face morphed to anger and I couldn't help but feel bothered about her sudden change of mood."What did you do? What didn't you do? You publicly humiliated me in New York. In front of all those people, you shamed me and you expect me to forgive you?"

"What the fuck are you talking about lady?"

"Stop pretending you don't know!" Stop pretending that you don't remember. I remember that day as if it was yesterday. I was in New York for some meetings and I decided to get some coffee. The stupid barista used local coffee beans to make my latte and I went to teach him a lesson. I was scolding him for his stupid and poor work, when you came." She pointed at me.

I was getting more confused by the second.

"You pushed me and I fell down to the floor, hitting my spine in the process, that's why I have a hump on my back. Nobody helped me up, instead they were telling you thank you, saying how much they appreciated you for standing up to a Karen." she said, appalling. "Eight months after, Xaden introduced you to me as his fucking mate."

I blinked once and walked towards her. I lowered myself till I was face to face with her. She looked frightened and scared and I couldn't help feeling a little bit of satisfaction from that.

I leaned forward to her ear and from the corner of my eye, I saw her hold her breath.

Pathetic.

"Mrs King, I have never been to New York before." I whispered.

She looked at me like I have grown two heads, "that's impossible, I know what I saw. I saw you, I know I did, it's just that you had short blue hair. You embarras-"

"Blue hair? Really?" I looked up at the ceiling and I knew I was in for a long ride. "Mrs King, I grew up in the strictest park in North America. They don't even allow multiple piercings and certainly not dyeing of hair. So how was it you saw me with short blue hair and it magically grew to waist length in eight months?"

She looked like she just saw a ghost and I chucked at her expression.

"Let's get you all better."

So I can never see you again.

****

"She's going to need more vitamins and she's going to need a lot of bed rest. In a couple of days she should be ok." I tell Xaden.

He looks at me with a dreamy expression on his face and I couldn't help but feel like he's being annoying.

"Well that's everything, so excuse me, I have somewhere else to be."

I turned around to leave but he held my hand. I'm getting really tired of everyone holding my hand today.

"What do you want, Xaden?"

"Im so sorry about everything that hhappened Zina, Please come back home. I missed you, the pack missed you and besides we're still mates. So you're going home with-"

"I, Zina William, accept your rejection."

Xaden moved back two steps from the pain and I felt the last piece of our mate bond sever away.

"I have no business with you anymore Xaden, leave me alone and get out of my way. I hate you with everything in me, I wish to never see you again. Once again I hate you and I wish to all the best in life.

POV: ZinaThe elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, but the sound might as well have been a gunshot for how violently my heart jolted. I stepped out onto the marble floor, the sharp click of my heels echoing down the hall like a countdown to my execution.Jared's words replayed in my head. You don't owe him anything. Don't let him corner you.I gripped the strap of my bag tighter, knuckles white. The conference room loomed at the end of the corridor, its glass walls revealing shadowy silhouettes inside. My reflection stared back at me as I passed, pale and drawn—a ghost of the woman I used to be.I wasn't ready for this. But I didn't have a choice.Pushing down the tremor threatening to claw its way up my throat, I adjusted the blazer that suddenly felt too tight and forced my legs to keep moving. The door opened before I could touch the handle."Mrs. Lennox."I froze.Xaden's lawyer stood there, a shark in a tailored suit with slicked-back hair and a predatory smile. POV: JaredThe crimson glow of Xaden's taillights vanished beyond the bend, swallowed whole by the darkness. But his presence lingered thick and suffocating, like the acrid smell of smoke after a fire. My fists curled so tightly my knuckles cracked, but the tremor in my hands betrayed me. I couldn't let Zina see it. Not now.Not after this. She knelt on the damp earth, clutching Asher so fiercely it seemed as if letting go would splinter him into irreparable pieces. The boy's muffled sobs pierced the suffocating silence, each one a blade twisting deeper into my chest. I dropped to one knee beside them, the gravel biting into my skin as I reached out and brushed Zina's shoulder. She flinched hard."Zina." My voice came out hoarse, the strain roughening the edges. "We need to move. Now."She lifted her head, her face pale and streaked with tears. Her bloodshot eyes locked on mine, wild and desperate. "He'll find us, Jared." Her voice cracked, the words barely a whisper. "He always finds

Zina's POVThe cabin door shut behind Jared, leaving me alone with Asher and the deafening silence that seemed to stretch forever. I clutched Asher tighter, my arms wrapped protectively around him as if that could shield him from everything outside. My eyes darted toward the windows, the curtains drawn tightly, but it didn't stop the fear crawling beneath my skin.Jared had promised we were safe here that no one could find us. But the footprints he'd spotted outside told a different story.I kissed Asher's forehead, brushing back the mess of curls stuck to his skin. He stirred slightly, murmuring something in his sleep, but didn't wake. At least one of us could rest.I envied him envied his innocence and belief that Jared and I could protect him. I wanted to believe it, too. But after everything we'd been through, trust didn't come so easily anymore. The fire in the stone hearth crackled softly, but instead of calming me, it only made the shadows dance more wildly across the walls. Zina's POVMy gaze drifted toward the window, the curtains half-drawn but still letting in the faint glow of the streetlights. The glass reflected the room around us—the soft glow of the lamps, the shadows dancing along the walls. But for the briefest moment, I thought I saw something else—a flicker of movement outside. The hair on the back of my neck prickled.I froze, my heart stuttering in my chest as I strained to see past the reflection. Nothing. Just the night. Just shadows."What's wrong?" Jared's voice pulled me back, and I turned quickly, forcing a smile."Nothing." I shook my head. "Just my imagination."His eyes lingered on mine, searching. Jared could always tell when something was off. It was one of the things I both loved and hated about him. He saw too much."Zina," he said softly, "don't do that thing where you pretend everything's fine when it's not."I laughed nervously. "I'm not pretending. I swear.""Then why do you look like you just saw a ghost?"I hesitated, uns

  • Echoes Of A Shattered Heart   Through the lens

POV: Unknown PersonThe night was cold, the kind of cold that seeped into your bones and lingered, but I barely noticed. The wind howled around me, sending leaves skittering across the rooftop, but I stayed still, cloaked in darkness. The only thing that mattered was the scene unfolding through the softly glowing window across the street.I pressed the binoculars closer to my face, my gaze narrowing as I brought them into sharper focus. Inside, Jared and Zina sat together, their faces lit by the golden glow of the room. The way they laughed, their heads tilted toward one another, made my stomach twist. They looked so happy, so at peace.Jared leaned closer to her, whispering something. Whatever he said made her laugh—a full, carefree laugh that filled the space around her. She tilted her head back, exposing the curve of her neck, and I felt a bitter taste rise in my throat. He touched her arm lightly, as if reassuring her of something, and her hand came to rest over his, her fingers l
