Brian tapped the steering wheel as his car idled in front of the school gates. Children streamed out in twos and threes, laughter bouncing off the dusty pavement as parents waited on the curb or leaned against cars. It was a Monday afternoon and the sun was mellowing into soft gold.

He had just replied to Lyra’s text about some Biology notes when he spotted her—Ruth. His baby sister, eleven years old, with puffy afro pigtails and a cartoon-printed backpack that seemed far too big for her frame.

  • Enemies to lovers    Chapter 20

The bell had rung fifteen minutes ago, but the school compound was still buzzing in that chaotic after-school way, children dragging oversized backpacks, teachers calling out instructions, parents honking from the gate. The late afternoon sun cast a golden haze over everything, making the dust hanging in the air look almost soft.Brian walked through the school yard with automatic strides, keys in hand. He spotted Ruth near the mango tree where they normally met her tiny frame bouncing as she talked animatedly. But she wasn’t alone.Lydia stood beside her.And Lydia wasn’t smiling.Brian slowed. Her shoulders were tight, her grip on her books stiff and defensive. Her braids fell forward a little as she leaned closer to Ruth, whispering voice small, shaky, but carrying in the still air.“I am so tired, She keeps hiding my books and calling me names.”Ruth’s little face scrunched in outrage. “She still bullies you?”“Shhh,” Lydia gasped, panic flickering in her eyes. “Don’t be loud”.“

Brian slid into his seat in the joint engineering lecture hall, the hum of chatter filling the room. Students typed, joked, scribbled in notebooks… normal, chaotic energy. But something was off.Austin wasn’t in his usual seat.He always sat two rows ahead. Same spot. Always.Brian scanned the room, pretending to arrange his books, until…There.Austin sat all the way by the window, hoodie up, face half-hidden behind his notebook. He didn’t look back. Not even once. Benjamin sat beside him quietly, head down on his locker.Brian frowned.Did something happen? Did Angela come back? Did he… break down again? He opened his laptop and pretended to focus, but his eyes kept drifting toward Austin. Each time Austin sensed Brian’s gaze, he shifted farther away turning his body slightly toward the window, shoulders tense, jaw clenched. As if Brian was the last person he wanted to deal with.Even during partner instructions, Austin didn’t look up.“Pairs, please revise your project data. Three

Brian sat hunched over the lab table, fingers tapping against the keys of his laptop. The lab was quiet, save for the faint hum of the overhead lights and the occasional shuffle of papers from students working in the other corner. The slides glowed back at himhalf-filled graphs, incomplete calculations, bullet points waiting for proper explanations. He exhaled sharply through his nose, dragging a hand over his face. “If Austin had just stayed. If he had just stopped running whenever things got tough.”He thought back to the club night, he remembered the sway of Austin’s hips and their conversation. His jaw tightened. He typed anyway, forcing the work forward on his own. He refused to let the project fail even if it meant carrying all the weight alone. Three weeks wasn't a long time. Austin couldn’t fail. He typed faster.“Damn, you look like you’re planning a takeover.”Brian glanced up. James leaned against the lab doorframe, grinning, arms crossed over his chest.“Working,” Brian mu

The cafeteria was buzzing as usual, trays clattering, voices overlapping in a constant hum. Austin sat with Benjamin and Oliver at their usual table near the back, half-listening as Oliver quietly explained something about his lab work. Austin picked at his food, head heavy with the weight of too many thoughts.Yesterday's night fuck wasn't good at all. He had gotten drunk. He had a severe headache and he didn’t have an organism. He still remembered the girl screaming as she reached ecstacy. He tried to imagine she was Angela but that hadn't worked either. In the end he tried to jerk off and when that didn't work he slept in anger. He picked at his food and tried to listen to what Oliver said. He started hearing whispers, Look , she is heading towards their table. Oliver stopped talking and Benjamin had a scowl on his face. The mysterious figure that others whispered about finally reached his table. His eyes fell on her. Her hair was tied back, makeup minimal, but her presence still

A crowd of students had gathered near the notice board outside the cafeteria. Loud chatter and excitement filled the air.Austin pushed through, curiosity piqued.“Bro, look!” someone said, pointing to a bold poster pinned to the board.Eastview Varsity vs Blackrock Colleges competition Basket Saturday at 12 pmA murmur of adrenaline buzzed through the players standing around. Austin’s teammates clapped him on the back.“Captain,” said Tariq, grinning. “This is your game, man. We know you dominate each game. If we win, it’s because of you.”Austin gave a tight smile. “Yeah... We’ll crush it.”He spoke and made eye contact with everyone “Not because of me but because we all work hard”“Yess!! We will win!!” They chorused together Only one person was quiet watching Austin with a quiet contemplation. _________Austin’s phone buzzed. Again. It had been buzzing with the same text for the past week.“Please, can we talk? Just one last time.”He stared at the screen. Then, impulsively, he

The breeze had picked up slightly now. A dry leaf tumbled lazily past the bench where Oliver and Scott sat. Students wandered in and out of the hostel building behind them, but their little corner of the courtyard felt separate and quiet, like the world had hit pause.Scott leaned back against the bench and closed his eyes, face tilted toward the sun.“I love this hour,” he said. “Everything feels... suspended. Like you can just be without expectations.”In his hands, his phone was vibrating. Someone was calling, but he didn't want to pick up. He didn't bother to check who was calling. Instead, he turned to look at him. “That’s kind of poetic.”Scott opened one eye and grinned. “I have layers. Like a croissant.”Oliver chuckled, shaking his head. “You’re not what I expected, honestly.”Scott raised a brow. “What did you expect?”“Some rich kid who coasted through secondary school because of connections. Someone who doesn’t really care about medicine, just wants to impress Daddy.”Scott
