Chapter 3 The Ring That Was Never Mine

Author: Melon Pop
I immediately recognized the ring to be the featured design from a jewelry brand that had approached me for a sponsorship not long ago.

Each person could customize only one with their ID.

They said they would pay 500,000 for advertising.

At that time, I had wanted to accept it. However, I wasn't doing it for the money. Instead, it was because Caleb and I had been together for five years. I thought it was finally time for our relationship to move forward.

However, Caleb turned it down.

"How can I use a sponsored ring for a proposal? Mel, trust me. One day, I'll buy you an even more beautiful one."

Yet, the same ring he said shouldn't be used for a proposal was on Jessica's finger.

I opened my WhatsApp and searched for the brand company's contact information.

"Did Caleb accept your campaign?"

They replied almost immediately, "Yes, but he wanted to post it on his girlfriend's personal account. Since it has far fewer followers than the main account, the sponsorship fee was reduced to 100,000. Still, the campaign performed really well. It's already trending."

The words were blurry through my tears.

I gripped my phone tightly and suddenly found it hard to breathe.

Even if it was an advertisement, the ring still had to be customized using Caleb's ID. This could only mean that he had used his one and only chance to customize that ring for Jessica.

Before I could wipe away my tears, the bedroom door opened, and Caleb walked in.

When he noticed my tears, he glanced at the trending topic on my phone.

He paused for a second before saying, "It's just a trending topic about Jessica and me. Is that really worth crying over?"

He pulled a few tissues from the box and held them out to me.

"Come on, stop crying. You're a girl. Help me pick a gift for Jessica. She gained over 100,000 followers this time, so we should celebrate."

I didn't take the tissues, but Caleb didn't seem to care as he lowered his head and scrolled through his phone.

There was a handbag that was worth over 50,000 dollars, a trendy four-leaf clover bracelet, and a camera worth more than 30,000 dollars.

It was obvious he had done his homework since everything he picked suited Jessica perfectly.

However, he would forget every single one of my birthdays or our anniversaries. Whenever I got upset about it, he would simply wrap his arms around me and smile.

"We're together every day. Our work and our lives are completely intertwined. Any regular day can be an anniversary for us."

Caleb held the phone closer and asked, "Which one do you think she should get?"

"Anything."

When he heard my response, his face darkened instantly.

"Melanie, why can't you just be happy for someone else? Jessica finally has some success, yet you have to act so petty."

In that split second, I felt a lump rise in my throat.

He seemed to have forgotten that when he first told me that Jessica wanted to become a content creator, I was the one who taught her everything.

I taught her how to edit videos, how to write titles, how to find good content ideas, and how to keep viewers watching.

Yet, this was how they repaid me in the end.

Caleb looked through the list for a while before giving up.

"Forget it. I'll buy them all."

The moment he finished speaking, my phone buzzed.

It was a notification from our shared account telling me that 160,000 dollars were being deducted from it.

It had been my mother's birthday not long ago. When I accidentally used that same card to transfer her 5,200 dollars, Caleb had complained about it for three days straight.

"Melanie, this account is our house fund. We can't spend money so carelessly."

I was about to ask him why he could use the same account when the front door unlocked.

His mother, Bethany, walked in while carrying several shopping bags with a huge smile on her face.

My new account grew slowly… at least when compared to my old couple's account. There were no overnight viral hits and no trending topics, but new viewers stayed every day. Some asked for the recipe for my tomato beef soup. Some commented that they had bought themselves flowers after watching my videos. Others enjoyed watching my new home slowly come together. The boring, dull curtains became a warm cream color.A floor lamp appeared beside the sofa.A few potted plants found a home on my windowsill. The once-empty table was gradually filled with mugs, books, and small gifts from my friends. They were all ordinary moments, so ordinary that I would never have considered filming them in the past. However, those simple days gave my account something it had never had before.Warmth.Six months later, I fell in love again. This time, I didn't make a grand announcement about my relationship status. I didn't write a script nor plan transitions. I didn't try to package the relationshi

  • Everything We Have   Chapter 9 Focusing Back on Myself

I created a new personal one three days after deleting that couple’s account. My profile picture was a desk lamp, and I'd used my own name as my username. There was no couple label nor any catchy tagline. Instead, there was just one sentence in my bio, which was, "Capturing moments of my own life."After I created the account, I stared at the empty homepage for a long time.I'd been so used to building someone else's image for the past four years that I didn't really know what to do now.Caleb looked good smiling. He looked good while saying soft words. He looked good while turning around in a sunset-lit kitchen. Hence, I transformed him into the perfect boyfriend everyone admired. I made him into someone who loved deeply, lived beautifully, and made ordinary days feel magical. However, I didn't know what to film when it came to myself. Then, it suddenly hit me—I had never really pointed the camera at myself. My first video was incredibly simple.I drew the hotel curtains op

Early the next morning, Caleb called so many times that my phone almost overheated itself into suicide. When I didn't answer, he started spamming me with texts."Melanie, what do you want?""The brands are all contacting me. Delete those screenshots.""Can't we talk about this in private? Do you really have to make this public?"I ignored every message.Just then, the manager from the jewelry brand called me.His voice sounded exhausted as he asked, "Ms. Houston, we'd like to confirm something with you. Were you the one who originally handled this partnership?""Yes.""Did you know Caleb later bypassed the main account and posted the campaign through Jessica's personal account?""No."There was a brief silence. When he spoke again, his tone had turned stone cold. "I understand."That same morning, the jewelry brand released an official statement. They explained that the campaign had been intended for a real couple. However, Caleb had concealed important facts and changed

Jessica posted a new update right after I hung up.It was a long message, talking about how she had been sickly since childhood, and it was Caleb who always looked after her like an older brother. Toward the end, she wrote, "I never thought Melanie would misunderstand things this badly. If my presence makes her uncomfortable, I'll step back."The attached photo showed her with red, tearful eyes. Before long, people flooded the comments with sympathy."I feel sorry for Jessica.""They were just childhood friends. Yet, she's being accused of being a homewrecker.""Is Melanie just jealous because Jessica's gaining followers so fast?"I wasn't surprised by her post.Jessica had always been like this. She never openly fought for anything and only feigned hurt. She would gain everyone else's sympathy, making them fight her battles. My retaliation was swift as I posted screenshots of my chat with the jewelry brand five minutes later. There were only three screenshots. The first

Caleb's phone wouldn't stop ringing on the drive home. There were messages from brands canceling partnerships, platform warnings, and calls from sponsors demanding answers. He replied while driving, repeating the same explanation over and over."It's just a public relations issue.""We'll release a statement.""The account will be fine."Even now, Caleb still hadn't realized what the true problem was.He was finding that out now, freezing in his tracks just as he walked through the front door. The studio lights in the living room were gone. My tripod was gone. The computer I'd spent four years editing on was gone. Not only that, but half of the closet was also empty, and only his things remained on the bathroom counter.I hadn't left him a single word, only a document envelope on the dining table. There were only three things inside. There was a backup of the account's data, four years' worth of business contracts, and a complete record of how our income had been divided. My

I sat beneath the desk lamp that had kept me company through countless sleepless nights and looked calmly into the camera."For the past thousand days, every vlog you've watched, every trip you've followed, and every viral video on this account was filmed through my lens."Then, the screen switched. It showed the raw footage from our very first video four years ago.The apartment was tiny, and the lights were dim. Caleb spun me around the living room, laughing with pure excitement."When we hit 50,000 followers, you'll be on camera with me. I'll show everyone how beautiful and talented my girlfriend is."After that, the video cut back to me."50,000 followers became 500,000, and 500,000 became nearly two million. However, I never got the chance to appear. Six months ago, someone took a picture of Caleb and me together. "Some people said I was doing it for fame, and others called me a homewrecker. At that time, I begged him to tell everyone the truth, but he said going public wi
