The first sign wasn’t the bodies. It was the birds. When flocks begin falling lifeless from the sky and people start collapsing without warning, Dr. Naomi Sinclair is thrust into a medical nightmare no science can explain. Victims bleed from every orifice before dying within minutes, hospitals are overwhelmed, and every answer only leads to more impossible questions. Then the air begins to change. As oxygen becomes humanity’s most valuable resource, governments ration every breath and erect massive atmospheric domes that keep cities alive for only one precious hour before shutting down. Beyond those walls, survival becomes a race against an invisible enemy. Amid the chaos, Naomi begins receiving anonymous messages that always seem to arrive moments before the next horrifying discovery. Someone knows what’s happening. Someone wants her to uncover the truth. But every scientist who gets too close to the answers disappears. Determined to stop the catastrophe, Naomi forms a small team to unravel a conspiracy buried beneath decades of secrets. Along the way, she finds an unexpected ally in Aiden Vale—a brilliant, compassionate man whose unwavering support becomes her only constant in a world that is rapidly falling apart. As trust turns into love, Naomi finally begins to believe that even in the darkest moments, hope is still worth holding onto. Until one discovery changes everything. Now, with humanity gasping for its final breath, Naomi must decide who to trust, what to sacrifice, and whether the truth is worth the price it demands. Because if the person she loves has been lying to her from the very beginning… How do you save the world when the only man who can help you might also be the one destroying it?

CHAPTER ONE: The Awakening

Day Zero

At 6:01 a.m., Manhattan was already awake.

The sidewalks pulsed with their usual rhythm. Office workers hurried toward subway entrances with steaming cups of coffee. Yellow taxis darted through intersections, their impatient horns blending into the city’s familiar soundtrack. Cyclists wove through traffic with practiced confidence, while street vendors arranged bagels and newspapers for the morning rush.

To everyone there, it was just another Monday.

No one noticed the man until he stopped walking.

He had been crossing East 42nd Street, his briefcase swinging gently at his side, when he froze in the middle of the sidewalk. A woman in a navy suit bumped into his shoulder and muttered a distracted apology without slowing down. He didn’t respond.

She glanced back, expecting an irritated look.

Instead, he remained perfectly still.

For a moment, she assumed he was checking his phone.

Except there was no phone in his hands.

People streamed around him like water flowing around a stone. Some frowned in annoyance as they squeezed past. Others barely acknowledged his presence.

A young father pushing a stroller slowed beside him.

“Sir?”

Nothing.

The man didn’t blink.

He didn’t shift his weight.

He simply stared ahead, his expression vacant, as though something beyond the crowded street had stolen every ounce of his attention.

The father hesitated before gently touching his arm.

The man’s knees buckled.

His body hit the pavement with a sickening crack that echoed above the morning traffic.

A chorus of gasps rippled through the crowd.

“Oh my God!”

“Somebody call 911!”

People rushed forward instinctively while others retreated in panic. Coffee cups spilled onto the sidewalk. A taxi screeched to a halt only a few feet away.

An off-duty nurse pushed through the gathering crowd.

“Give him some room!” she shouted, dropping to her knees beside him.

She pressed two fingers against the side of his neck.

Nothing.

She checked again.

Still nothing.

“No pulse.”

A man beside her already had emergency services on the line.

“They’re on their way,” he said. “Can you start CPR?”

The nurse leaned over the man’s chest.

Before she could begin, something made her stop.

His skin.

She frowned and touched his forehead.

Ice cold.

Not cool from the morning air.

Cold enough to make her instinctively pull her hand away.

“What is…”

A thin line of blood appeared beneath one nostril.

At first, it looked insignificant, no more than a trickle. Then another stream emerged from his other nostril.

Someone in the crowd pointed.

“He’s bleeding.”

The blood continued to flow, creeping over his lips before dripping onto the concrete.

It wasn’t the bright crimson red she expected.

It was darker.

So dark that it looked almost black against the pale gray pavement.

A woman covered her mouth.

Another stepped backward, clutching her purse to her chest.

The nurse stared in confusion. In fifteen years of emergency medicine, she had treated gunshot wounds, car accidents, ruptured aneurysms, and catastrophic trauma.

She had never seen blood like this.

Then more appeared.

It seeped from the corners of the man’s eyes.

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Someone whispered a prayer.

Others instinctively reached for their phones. Within seconds, dozens of cameras were recording, each trying to capture something no one could explain.

Sirens wailed in the distance.

Relief flickered across the nurse’s face.

“They’re almost here.”

She reached for the man’s wrist one last time.

Before her fingers touched him, screams erupted from across the street.

A woman carrying a laptop bag collapsed outside a coffee shop, her belongings scattering across the sidewalk.

People rushed toward her.

Then a cyclist swerved violently, crashed into a parked car, and hit the ground without even trying to break his fall.

“There’s another one!” someone shouted.

The crowd turned.

An elderly man waiting at the bus stop folded to the pavement as though every muscle in his body had suddenly stopped working.

Three people.

Three different places.

Within seconds.

No collision.

No explosion.

No warning.

The first ambulance arrived moments later, its tires skidding against the curb. Paramedics jumped out, splitting in different directions as confused voices shouted over one another.

“Male, approximately forty!”

“Another victim over here!”

“We’ve got two more across the street!”

The lead paramedic froze as his radio crackled to life.

“Dispatch to all units, we’re receiving multiple reports of unexplained collapses across Midtown. Additional crews are responding.”

He frowned.

“What do you mean, multiple?”

The radio hissed.

“Negative on cause. Reports still coming in.”

Almost at the same moment, phones all along the street vibrated.

People frowned as they reached into their pockets.

No emergency alert.

No breaking news.

No weather warning.

Just two words from an unknown sender.

LOOK UP.

Almost instinctively, dozens of heads tilted toward the cloudless morning sky.

For one impossibly long heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then the pigeons began to fall.

Not one.

Not two.

Hundreds.

They dropped from the sky like stones, crashing onto rooftops, windshields, sidewalks, and terrified pedestrians. Wings beat frantically for only a second before falling still. Gray feathers spiraled through the air like snow as screams erupted across the street.

The first bird struck the hood of an idling taxi with a dull thud.

The second shattered the windshield of a delivery van.

Another landed at the feet of the off-duty nurse.

Its tiny body twitched once.

Blood seeped from its eyes.

She stared, unable to move.

It was the same impossible shade.

Almost black.

As Manhattan descended into chaos, a single instruction appeared on a screen somewhere in the city.

Find Dr. Naomi Sinclair.
