Chapter three

Years passed, and the bond of friendship flourished with remarkable speed. Mirabel welcomed her third child, a little boy to join her two siblings, and their household brimmed with happiness and affection. Susan, steadfast in her devotion, made it a point to check in on them daily. Meanwhile, she had managed to stabilize her father’s business, successfully handing it over to her brother after their uncle’s passing.

Jimmy had matured into a striking young man, his physique muscular and his stature six inches taller. His deep blue eyes sparkled with intelligence, and his curly hair fell softly over his forehead like a playful cap. Handsome yet humble, he commanded the admiration of those around him, drawing friends eager to bask in his presence. Despite the expectations that his good looks would lead him down the path of a notorious Casanova, he remained steadfastly devoted to one woman.

After some gentle persuasion from his friends, he found himself in a budding romance with Taylor, the most renowned and affluent girl in school, who had made her intentions toward him abundantly clear.

When Jimmy introduced Taylor as his girlfriend to his family, they welcomed her with open arms, embracing her with warmth and affection. Yet, beneath her glamorous exterior, Taylor’s wealth and fame had cultivated a sense of entitlement that often manifested as jealousy. She became easily agitated whenever she spotted Jimmy laughing or conversing with other girls.

In a moment of fury, she and her friends set an ambush for those girls, delivering a harsh warning that no one dared ignore. Rude and often unkind, Taylor’s behavior troubled Jimmy, who made countless attempts to guide her toward a better path. But each time he sought to caution her, the conversations ended with him threatening to end their relationship. In response, Taylor would turn to Jimmy’s parents, vowing to change, and he, ever hopeful, would relent, granting her yet another chance.

A week later, Mirabel busied herself with preparations for Susan’s anticipated arrival. A delectable feast was underway, though Jimmy and his siblings remained blissfully unaware of the surprise, as it had been kept a well-guarded secret. Jimmy emerged from his room, ready for school with his bag slung over his shoulder, he caught sight of his mother.

“Mom, what’s happening? Are we hosting a feast?” he inquired, curiously.

Mirabel turned to him, a smile playing on her lips. “I suppose you could say that, son. We have a special guest joining us today.”

“Who, Mom? Is it the grandparents?” Rachel chimed in from the staircase, her little brother in tow, both dressed for school.

“No, dear, I’m keeping that a secret,” she replied playfully.

“Alright, kids, it’s time for me to drop you off at school,” Greg announced, appearing at the door.

“I thought Jimmy was taking us,” Rachel protested.

“Not today, sis. I’m not your chauffeur; Dad will handle the drop-off.”

“You’re just using that as an excuse to go pick up your girlfriend,” she shot back with a teasing lilt.

“Maybe you’re right,” he replied nonchalantly.

“Like I care to go with you,” she retorted.

“Like I care to take you,” he countered.

“Enough, you two! No arguments today,” Mirabel interjected, her tone firm yet gentle.

“He started it! He always chooses his girlfriend over us,” Rachel complained.

“Hmm, sounds like someone’s feeling a bit jealous,” he teased, eliciting giggles from both siblings who relished their playful banter, despite their frequent squabbles.

“I want to go with you,” John said, wrapping his arms around Jimmy’s leg and gazing up with wide, pleading eyes.

“Aww! My adorable little brother, whom I cherish dearly—unlike the witch here,” he remarked, casting a sidelong glance at Rachel, who rolled her eyes with a scoff. “Don’t worry, John, I’ll take you next time, but today I can’t. I have a test, and I don’t want to be late.” He ruffled his hair and produced a chocolate bar from his bag, handing it to John. “Here you go.” John’s face lit up with joy as he accepted the treat, and Jimmy turned to Rachel. “How about you, little devil? Want one?”

“Nah,” she replied, crossing her arms.

“I know you want it,” he teased, extending the chocolate toward her. She reached for it, but he swiftly pulled his hand back. “I thought you said you didn’t want it.”

“Mom!” she called out, seeking support.

“Jimmy, stop teasing your sister,” Mirabel’s voice echoed from the kitchen.

“Call me big bro,” he smirked, enjoying the moment as Rachel sighed in exasperation, feeling cornered.

“Fine! Big bro,” she relented.

“That’s my little devil,” he said, affectionately ruffling her hair before handing her the chocolate, eliciting a secret smile from her in return.

“Hope you fail your test,” she declared, before dashing off to join her brother and father, who was already waiting for her.

“Hey! Give me my chocolate! You can’t wish that upon me and expect to keep my chocolate!” Jimmy called out, chasing after her.

Moments later, Jimmy pulled into the school parking garage, stepping out of his car just as his friends, Austin and Samuel, rushed toward him. Austin slung an arm around Jimmy’s shoulder as they strolled together.

“I didn’t see you come in with your girlfriend. Are you two fighting again?” Austin inquired, a teasing lilt in his voice. Jimmy scoffed in response.

“We’re not. I just don’t want to be late for the test,” he replied.

“Oh, I see,” Samuel remarked, nodding.

The three continued their lighthearted banter as they made their way to class.

Later that day, after school had let out, Jimmy arrived home with his siblings, having picked them up from their nearby school. He and Rachel were once again lost in their playful bickering as they entered the house.

“Duh!” Rachel exclaimed.

Susan and Mirabel turned at the sound, their eyes widening in surprise as they beheld Susan, looking as elegant as ever, her youthful beauty unchanged by the years.

“Aunty Susan!” John called out joyfully, rushing to hug her, quickly followed by Rachel.

“Look at my beautiful angels,” she said, pulling back to caress their faces. “You’ve both grown so much.”

“You haven’t aged a bit, Aunt. You still look like a teenager,” Rachel remarked, her eyes wide with admiration.

“Thank you, but you’re no different. You’re as beautiful as your mother. I suppose you’re thirteen now?”

“Nah, I’m fifteen,” Rachel corrected with a grin.

“Wow, so grown-up!” Susan exclaimed.

“Jimmy, why are you still standing there? Come say hi to your aunt,” Mirabel urged.

Susan turned to face him, her warm smile inviting, but Jimmy felt rooted to the spot, unable to move or speak.

“Jimmy?” Susan called softly.

“Um, excuse me, everyone,” he stammered before hastily retreating to his room, leaving the others in a state of confusion.

“What’s wrong? Is he okay?” Susan asked, glancing around as they all shrugged, unsure.

“Sweetheart, did something happen on your way home?” Mirabel inquired, her gaze fixed on Rachel, who merely rolled her eyes in response.

“Let me see what’s wrong,” Mirabel suggested, but Susan stopped her.

“Allow me,” she said, striding away.

She reached Jimmy’s doorstep, she knocked gently before pushing the door open. Inside, she found him standing by the window, his room a marvel of design, adorned with exquisite decor and filled with the soothing scent of air fresheners. Susan marveled at both the beauty of the room and the delightful aroma that enveloped her.

“Jimmy,” she called softly, and he turned to her in an instant. “Um, what’s wrong? You…” Her voice trailed off as he rushed into her arms, enveloping her in a tight embrace that took her completely off guard.

After what felt like an eternity, they slowly pulled away, and she tenderly caressed his cheek, smiling.

“I miss you, Aunt Susan,” he murmured.

“I miss you too. Just look at you! You’ve grown into such a handsome young man,” she complimented, watching a shy smile crept across his face.

“I’m sorry I walked out on you; I was just…”

“It’s alright,” she reassured him, their smiles warming the space between them.

“You haven’t aged a day, Aunt Susan. You look even younger than I remembered.”

“Well, I owe that to God and a good diet,” she replied, sharing a light laugh with him.

“I’m so happy you’re back; at least I won’t be lonely anymore,” he said, his eyes cast downward.

“Lonely? Were you really lonely? Besides, your mom let slip that you have a girlfriend now,” she teased, watching his smile widen. “I’d love to meet her. Can you arrange that?”

“Absolutely, when I get the chance,” he replied.

“Fortunately, I’m not going anywhere, so I can wait,” she said, and Jimmy pulled her into another unexpected embrace.

After a moment, they made their way to the dining room, chatting and laughing together.

“I thought you’d be sulking in your room,” Rachel teased, and Jimmy scoffed in response.

“I apologize for running off like that; I was just too surprised to see Aunt Susan, especially since Mom never mentioned she was coming,” he explained.

“It was meant to be a surprise,” Mirabel chimed in.

“Yeah, and I certainly got surprised,” he replied, and laughter filled the room as they settled down to enjoy their meal.
