"What did you just say?" I asked, my fingers nervously tracing the collar of my dress as a sudden wave of heat rushed up my neck.

"I asked if you wanted to be my real girlfriend," Ethan repeated, his dark eyes piercing directly into mine, refusing to let me look away.

"Come on, Ethan, that’s impossible," I told him, trying to ground myself in reality. "Is this because of the kisses? Because we can totally stop. Besides, it only happened in the heat of the moment. I mean, friends kiss all the time under pressure, but I really can't open my heart right now. It's still healing."

The second the words left my mouth, Ethan burst into a deep, hearty laugh, throwing his head back and clutching his stomach.

"You seriously need to see your face right now," he managed to say through his laughter. "I was just playing with you, Kattie. I know you don't like me enough to actually date me."

As much as a massive wave of relief washed over me, a tiny, girly part of my heart secretly wished he had meant every single word.

"Exactly. I don't like you that much at all," I shot back, forcing a bright smile.

Suddenly, Ethan leaned across the steering, his face hovering mere inches from mine, his warm breath fanning across my skin. "For someone who doesn't like me all that much, I seem to have a pretty massive effect on you." His gaze flicked downward. "Your hands."

"What about them?" I asked, desperately trying to maintain my composure.

"They're shaking, Kattie," he murmured, a devastating smirk playing on his lips.

"No, they're not. I'm just... cold."

"Whatever helps you sleep at night, love," he chuckled, finally pulling back into his seat. "Good night, Kattie Berry. Thank you for an incredibly eventful evening."

I nodded quickly, escaping the suffocating tension of the car. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs as I rushed up the driveway and slipped into the house. The entire place was pitch black, save for the faint glow from the dining room light reflecting off the living room walls.

"Hey, girl!" a familiar voice hissed from the shadows.

I literally jumped out of my skin, clutching my chest. "Janice!" I gasped as she stepped into the light, wearing a massive, knowing grin. "Why on earth did you scare me like that?"

"Well, I wanted to surprise you! What were you guys doing in that sports car for so long anyway, babes?" she teased as we quietly made our way upstairs to my bedroom.

"Nothing, babes. We were just talking about how the gala went," I lied smoothly, intentionally avoiding her sharp gaze.

The moment we crossed the threshold into my room, I kicked off my heels and sank onto the edge of the bed, while Janice claimed the sofa. "Are my parents asleep?"

"Yes, they got tired of waiting up," she dismissed with a wave of her hand. "So tell me everything! How was the event? Did Cole actually show up with Bella?"

"No, he was surprisingly alone. He actually caught me by the bar and tried to force me into a private conversation, but Ethan cut him off and totally put him in his place," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face.

"Yebo!" Janice cheered, throwing her hands in the air, using a slang term she had obsessively picked up from South African movies.

"Shhhh... it's late!" I hissed, pressing a frantic finger to my lips.

"Hold on a second," Janice said, her inner detective suddenly taking over. She stood up, marched over to the bed, and gently tilted my chin upward, inspecting my face under the bedroom light. "Did you eat anything at the gala?"

"No, just had a glass of champagne," I replied, completely puzzled.

"Then where did all your lipstick go?" she demanded, crossing her arms. "I distinctly remember applying a very generous, bulletproof layer on those lips before you left."

"Ehhhm..." I stammered, my cheeks growing hot. "I don't know... maybe it just... evaporated?"

"Oh my gosh, bestie! You kissed Ethan fucking Vance, didn't you?" she squealed, giggling like a schoolgirl.

"Yes, but it was just a quick peck after he won his award!" I deflected, suddenly finding my toes incredibly fascinating.

"Lies, bitch, total lies! A peck does not completely wipe out a high-end matte lipstick. Tell me the truth right now!" she pointed a finger at me dramatically.

I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "Okay, fine! We had a massive make-out session on the balcony before the awards started," I whispered frantically.

Janice literally launched herself onto the bed, shaking my shoulders. "Bitch!! Tell me everything! How was it? Is he a good kisser?"

"Well... it was incredible, babes," I confessed, blushing furiously. "His lips are shockingly soft, and the way his hands gripped my waist... it was so intense and hot." I bit my lip, remembering the heavy warmth of his tuxedo jacket slipping off my shoulders.

"You are absolutely rotten, Kat," Janice laughed playfully. "But honestly... maybe he could be the one. You know... the one to finally take the V-card."

She nudged me with a suggestive wink, and I let out a nervous laugh. "I don't know, Janice. We aren't real. For all I know, he's just a playboy having a good time."

Janice shrugged, leaning back with a grin. "Then have some fun right back with him."

"I like you too, Ethan," I told him honestly. Liking Ethan was dangerously easy."I want to say something else, but I won't force it," he said softly. I nodded, and he gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Get some sleep, love. We have a long trip ahead of us tomorrow. I'll take a shower now."I nodded again, watching as his towering frame disappeared into the bathroom.Lying back down on the incredibly soft mattress, I dialed Janice’s number. "What's up, girl?" I greeted her the second she picked up."I'm fine, Kat. How is it going over there?" she asked, her voice a bit more stable than before."Good. Really, really good," I told her, a small smile tugging at my lips. "Are you sure you're doing okay?" I asked, remembering her heartbreak from earlier."Yes, I'm better. I realized... well, I realized he deserved better anyway," she said in a low, reflective tone.I nodded to the empty room. "Okay. Ethan and I will come get you at your place tomorrow. Make sure to pack your b

We got up and left the room as Ethan led me to his grand dining room. He pulled out a chair for me, sliding into the seat right beside me as the private chef served the food."It smells really nice," I said, offering a warm smile to the chef."Thank you, Donna," the man replied with a respectful nod before quietly leaving us to eat."Donna?" I repeated, turning to face Ethan as he began eating."What?" he asked, his mouth slightly full."Why did he just call me Donna?" I asked him, genuinely confused."Because this is my house and I'm the Don. You're my girlfriend, which makes you the Donna," he said, chuckling softly."But from what I know, a Don is a mafia lord," I told him, tilting my head.Ethan let out a rich, deep laugh, putting down his fork. "What? You think I'm part of the mafia?"I looked at his flawless, handsome face and suddenly burst into laughter. "Of course not. You don't look like you can even hold a gun.""You'd be surprised," he said softly. His eyes held

"Can you stop?" I pleaded, my heart hammering against my ribs.He let out a low chuckle, but slowly stood up and turned around to face the wall.I quickly slipped out of my clothes and into a comfortable sundress, grabbing my shoulder bag from the bed. "Okay, turn around."Ethan turned back, his dark eyes instantly sweeping over my outfit, assessing every detail. "You look really beautiful, Kattie Berry," he said softly, a dangerous warmth entering his voice as he stepped closer to me."Thank you," I murmured, my gaze involuntarily dropping down to his lips."Let's go, love," he whispered, breaking the spell as he easily lifted my heavy suitcase.Once we reached the front porch, I locked the door securely behind us and slipped the key under the welcome mat for my mom or dad. We got into the car, and the moment he threw the suitcase into the trunk and slid behind the wheel, I quickly shot a text to Janice to confirm she was riding with us the next morning.Ethan pulled out of t

"I called your dad, love," he repeated smoothly.I stood frozen in the middle of my room, plunged into absolute shock. "How? You literally just invited me to your house! When on earth did you find the time to call my dad?""I dialed his number the exact second I dropped you off," Ethan replied, his tone dripping with effortless confidence. "Actually, I’m already on my way back to get you. Pack your bags, Kattie. I'm almost there."Before I could even open my mouth to protest, the line went dead.I stared at my phone in disbelief, quickly finished off my biscuits, and rushed upstairs to pack. I dragged my vacation suitcase out of the closet and laid it flat across the mattress. Just as I unzipped it, my phone vibrated violently against the nightstand. It was Janice."Hi, girl," she mumbled. Her voice was uncharacteristically heavy and laced with a thick, sad tone."What's wrong, Janice?" I asked immediately, sitting down on the edge of the bed."It's Brandon," she said, sniffin

"But it is fake," I told him sternly. He remained completely silent. His eyes stayed locked on the road ahead as his grip tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. When we finally pulled up in front of my house, I stared at him, waiting for him to say something. Anything. But the silence in the car stretched on, heavy and suffocating."Thank you for the ride," I murmured, breaking the quiet."Mmmm," he grunted, his gaze dropping as he began to nervously play with his fingers.A sudden wave of guilt washed over me. I bit my lip, trying to soften the tension. "Ehhhm... I'm going camping the day after tomorrow," I told him. He didn't move. "So I have to pack my bags today. We'll be leaving with all my classmates on a charter bus picking us up at the school."He nodded slowly, finally turning to face me. His expression was completely unreadable as he spoke. "Will Saltzman be in attendance?""He is my classmate, so of course he will attend," I told him casual

The alarm on my nightstand blared loudly, tearing us both from sleep. We sat up at the exact same moment."Morning, bestie," Janice mumbled beside me, rubbing her eyes before instantly disappearing into the bathroom. I hummed a groggy response in return. She popped her head out a moment later, wrapped in a towel. "Is your spare school uniform still available?""Yes, it is," I told her. She disappeared back inside to take a shower while I rummaged through my wardrobe. I found the uniform and laid it out on the bed right next to mine. She was done in no time, and I quickly took my turn in the shower. We hurriedly dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast, where my mom had prepared scrambled eggs with toast. We ate in comfortable silence before heading off to school."Your parents are so sweet, Kat," Janice said, keeping her eyes on the road as she drove. "I wish I had that too," she added, a faint hint of sadness lacing her voice."You know you’re always welcome to stay at my pl

"Go ahead, I'm listening," I told him, crossing my arms over the table. "What are the rules?""Well..." he started, pausing briefly as the waitress returned with our order. "Well, I'm just trying to pay back your kindness towards me," I told him, keeping my eyes locked on my reflection in the mirror, trying to steady myself."I'm flattered," Ethan’s smooth baritone hummed through the speaker. "So, what's your decision, love? Are you going to help me out or not?""I

The weekend had flown by in a blur, and a whole new week was already staring me in the face. Standing in front of the mirror, I quickly adjusted the collar of my school uniform. My thoughts kept drifting back to Ethan. A heavy wave of guilt settled deep in my chest. Sure, he had helped me get the
