The folder was thin.

That was the thing I kept returning to as I stood at the bottom of the staircase with my hands shaking and the words still ringing — someone wanted you dead — the folder was thin. As though the entirety of what my life had been reduced to, the documentation of a missing heir, the paper trail of a child someone had wanted erased, fit into something you could slide under a door.
