The carriage stopped beneath the grand estate of the Alpha King, and Natasha immediately understood why warriors preferred battlefields over silk diplomacy.

Because battlefields at least made sense.

The emerald gown her sister had forced onto her clung like a second skin, elegant in a way that felt more like restraint than beauty. Every shift of her body reminded her she was not dressed for combat, but for evaluation.

Her sister, seated across from her, looked untouched by the tension. Pale gold and lace, hair pinned in soft spirals that caught the lantern light.

“Stop fidgeting,” her sister said gently, reaching to adjust a strand of Natasha’s hair. “You look beautiful.”

“I look expensive,” Natasha muttered. “There is a difference.”

Her sister smiled as if that was endearing rather than accurate.

Outside, the estate rose in carved stone and glowing windows, alive with sound and movement. Music spilled through the courtyard doors. Laughter followed it. So did something sharper beneath it, the constant undercurrent of wolves assessing one another without mercy.

Natasha stepped down beside her sister and immediately felt it.

Eyes.

Not just looking.

Measuring.

They entered the ballroom, and the noise swallowed them whole. Crystal glasses chimed. Music swelled. Conversations overlapped in layered politics disguised as pleasantries.

Chandeliers burned overhead like captured stars.

Natasha forced her posture steady, shoulders squared, chin lifted. Warriors did not shrink under observation. Even when the observation felt like teeth pressing in from every direction.

The first alpha intercepted them before they had taken more than a few steps.

Older. Silver-threaded beard. Polished smile.

His gaze landed on her sister first.

“Alpha Aldric’s daughters,” he said smoothly. “A pleasure.”

Then his eyes moved to Natasha.

A fraction too long on her frame. A fraction too interested in what she could offer beyond conversation.

“And the warrior,” he added. “I have heard about your training grounds reputation.”

Enthusiasm.

The word was dressed as praise and delivered as dismissal.

Natasha smiled politely. “I prefer results over reputation.”

His brows lifted slightly, as if she had spoken out of turn, then he turned away from her as if she had already been processed.

Her sister, however, was not dismissed. She was collected.

Alphas began to gather.

Not around Natasha.

Around her.

Laughter. Invitations. Carefully worded compliments. Hands brushing too close without touching.

Natasha drifted at the edge of it, present but unnecessary. The way a guard stands outside a room that was never meant to include her.

Her sister handled it effortlessly. A tilt of the head. A soft laugh. A lowered gaze at exactly the right moment.

Natasha watched it all with something complicated tightening in her chest.

Not envy.

Not entirely.

Something closer to recognition that the world had already decided what kind of woman was valuable.

And she was not it.

A voice broke through her thoughts.

“Natasha, correct?”

She turned.

A beta male stood a respectful distance away. No appraisal in his eyes. No calculation in his posture.

Just awareness.

“I’m Harren,” he said. “I’ve heard your pack’s warriors are difficult to impress.”

Natasha studied him for a moment longer than necessary.

“I am worse,” she said.

That earned a genuine smile.

“Then I will survive a dance.”

“I don’t dance.”

“So I’ve heard.”

He gestured lightly toward the floor where couples moved in practiced rhythm.

“One song. No expectations. No commentary. If you decide I am intolerable, you may throw me into a pillar.”

A pause.

Against her better judgment, something in his tone disarmed her.

“Fine,” she said. “One song.”

She placed her hand in his.

The dance was controlled, careful, almost clinical. Harren kept space between them, guiding rather than steering. He did not crowd her. Did not test her strength. Did not mistake her silence for weakness.

Around them, the ballroom continued its quiet war of alliances.

Every smile was currency.

Every touch was negotiation.

Natasha understood battlefields.

This was simply a quieter one.

When the song ended, she stepped back immediately.

“Thank you,” she said.

“It was an honor,” Harren replied simply, and disappeared into the crowd without trying to claim anything more.

That alone made him dangerous in a different way.

She retreated to the edge of the ballroom, reclaiming distance like air.

That was when the room changed.

It was subtle at first. A shift in attention. A tightening of posture. Conversations thinning at the edges like threads being pulled.

Even the music seemed to hesitate.

Then the entrance doors opened.

Damien Blackthorne stepped inside.

He did not announce himself.

He did not need to.

Power preceded him.

Dark hair, controlled but unrestrained. A face carved with precision rather than softness. Crystal blue eyes that did not search the room so much as assess it and discard what was irrelevant.

A tunic the color of stormlight clung to his frame. A silver fang clasp rested at his throat like a quiet warning.

No escort followed him.

Only silence expanded in his wake.

Alphas straightened instinctively. Some stepped back without realizing it. Others held their ground too rigidly, as if refusing to acknowledge reaction.

Natasha watched without meaning to.

She told herself it was curiosity.

Or irritation.

Or simply awareness of another dangerous presence in a room full of them.

Damien’s gaze moved through the crowd with detached disinterest.

Then it stopped.

Not fully.

Just a fraction of hesitation.

Across the ballroom.

On her.

Natasha did not look away quickly enough.

For a single suspended moment, their attention held.

Something shifted in his expression. Subtle. Controlled. Almost erased before it could be identified.

Then it was gone.

Damien continued forward into the crowd as if nothing had happened.

But Natasha’s wolf stirred beneath her skin.

Not alarmed.

Not calm.

Alert.

As if something had just entered the room that could not be ignored.

She exhaled slowly, forcing herself to look away.

This was just another alpha.

Another political variable.

Another complication in a night she already disliked.

But her body did not entirely agree.

And somewhere deep inside her, something that should have remained quiet pressed against the surface.

Not recognition.

Not understanding.

Just awareness.

As if the night itself had quietly changed its shape.

Natasha waited until the moon had climbed high enough to silver the edges of the canopy, then gave the signal.A short, sharp whistle that carried no farther than thirty feet.Around her, the formation shifted without sound.Warriors dismounted in practised silence, hands finding weapons in the dark with the ease of long training.Leather creaked softly.Horses stamped once, then stilled, sensing the tension that rippled through their riders like a current. She'd spent the last two hours mapping it out in her head, turning the terrain over and over until she could see it with her eyes closed.Jasper had tracked the scout to a shallow ravine east of their position, where the pine trees thinned just enough to create a natural corridor. The ground there was soft.Moss and decomposing needles. The ravine's walls rose steeply on either side, funnelling anyone who entered toward a narrow exit at the far end.If the scout was reporting, he'd have a rendezvous point. And if there was a rendez

Dawn came grey and cold, frost clinging to the rocks like white lace, and Natasha was already mounted before the first fires had fully died. Her shoulder had stiffened overnight, the muscles around the wound locking into a knot of dull, persistent fire that ran from her collarbone down to her elbow. She'd slept maybe three hours.Broken, shallow stretches punctuated by the bond's restless pulse and the sounds of sentries changing shifts.Every time she'd closed her eyes, she'd seen Damien's face. Not a memory, exactly, but an impression. The bond feeding her fragments of his tension. His exhaustion. His unrelenting focus. He was pushing himself. She could feel it the way you feel a storm building on the horizon, pressure dropping before the first crack of thunder. The day's ride was clear. That was the cruel irony. The terrain opened into a broad valley floor, the path smooth and hard-packed, the kind of ground that let the horses stretch into a steady canter and eat up miles without

The first day bled into the second without mercy. The terrain east of Crescent Moon territory shifted from familiar forested hills to something harsher.Rocky ridges cut across the landscape like broken ribs.Dense pine thickets swallowed the light.Narrow passes funneled the wind into a bitter current that cut through even the thickest cloaks.Natasha kept the companies at a disciplined pace.Fast enough to cover ground.Measured enough to preserve the horses' strength for what lay ahead. She knew the route. She had ridden variations of it a dozen times during training exercises with her father's warriors. But this was different. This wasn't practice.Every shadow in the tree line carried weight.Every distant sound on the wind prickled against her senses.Lyra rode at her left flank, her dark eyes sweeping the ridgeline with mechanical regularity. She hadn't spoken much since they'd broken camp at dawn, but Natasha could feel her watching.Quick, assessing glances that dropped to Na

  • Fated to the Shadow Alpha   Chapter One-Hundred and Thirty-Two: The Road Back

Natasha tested her arm the way she tested everything.By pushing past the point of caution and daring her body to fail her.It didn't.Not entirely. The wound had closed significantly since the healer's attention two days ago, the angry red edges knitting together beneath fresh linen, the salve doing its work with a slow, steady burn that she'd learned to breathe through. She rolled her shoulder experimentally in the early morning light behind the barracks, away from watchful eyes, feeling the pull of healing tissue, the tightness of muscle that hadn't been used properly in days.It ached.Deep.Persistent.The kind of ache that lived in the bone. But it held. She drew her knife from her belt with her left hand, the injured side, and flipped it once, testing her grip. Her fingers closed around the hilt with familiar pressure, and the blade caught the pale dawn light in a clean arc.The motion sent a sharp throb radiating from her shoulder down to her wrist. She clenched her jaw agains
