Chapter 2

Author: Reneemoon
After receiving a brief confirmation, I hung up.

Before the screen could go dark, a Facebook post caught my eye.

It was Kiera.

In the photo, she was pouting at the camera with the ballet trophy that should have been mine cradled in her arms.

[Guess winning takes a little luck, too. Thanks for the assist, sis. Love you.]

A needle, sharp and sudden, drove straight into my heart.

Expressionless, I scrolled down and saw Kiera's sharp-tongued best friend, Brooke Hayes, teasing in the comments.

[Careful. Aren't you worried Garrett will see this and give you a lecture?]

Kiera had replied with a tongue-out emoji.

[Fine, I'll take it down. Hope Garrett isn't mad at me.]

I drew a deep breath, about to block her account.

Then Garrett's reply popped up.

[The eternal runner-up finally won something. Why delete it? Flaunt it if you want.]

There was a time I would have naively read that as him mocking Kiera.

But now I realized that Garrett's favoritism had always been obvious.

I suddenly remembered how, back during our competition days, Kiera would throw a fit every time Garrett bought me new ballet shoes, demanding a pair for herself.

Garrett would act annoyed, but he always had someone deliver her an identical pair, sometimes even finer than mine.

I once asked him why he always indulged Kiera. He tapped me on the head with a resigned smile.

"Silly, I'm just keeping her from making your life difficult."

Footsteps on the stairs snapped me out of my thoughts.

Garrett pushed the door open and frowned slightly when he saw me, a hint of reproach in his expression.

"Why weren't you waiting downstairs? I've been looking everywhere for you."

Once, I would have rushed to the door at the slightest sound.

At the first sign of tiredness on his face, I would have fussed over him endlessly.

But now I just stood still, my gaze drifting to his neck.

The concealer there had been smudged away, exposing a vivid red hickey.

So Kiera's provocations had already become this brazen.

Seeing me silent, Garrett reached out to pull me into his arms.

"Vivi? What's gotten into you today? Still upset about the competition?"

"It's all right. Losing the Grand Prix is a shame, but you still have me. Once we're married, I'll make it up to you."

The words "make it up to you" hit me like a fist to the chest.

I sidestepped his hand. My voice came out colder than I recognized.

"Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that. My injuries from the accident have healed. I'm going to file an appeal with the committee to have the competition results reviewed."

Garrett's head snapped toward me, his eyes wide with shock.

"You can't do that. The award's already been given to Kiera..."

The moment the words left his mouth, he seemed to realize he had lost his composure. He covered it with a cough.

"Vivi, even if you've healed, jumping back in too fast could be dangerous. Why put yourself through that again?"

I clenched my fists, nails biting into my palms.

"I didn't go through ten years of suffering just so I could marry you. I'm not willing to let all of that be for nothing."

"Why are you so against this? Is it because you can't bear to see Kiera get hurt?"

Garrett's expression darkened, his voice dropping.

"Why are you dragging Kiera into this?"

"The decision is final. Why do you insist on stirring things up?"

"Besides, we're getting married in three days. You want to compete now?"

I let out a bitter smile.

"Cancel the wedding, and I can."

Garrett's pupils contracted. He stared at me in disbelief.

"Vivian, have you lost your mind? Marrying me has been all you've ever wanted since we were kids."

"Now you're throwing our wedding away over a trophy?"

"I'll chalk this up to you being overwhelmed today, but don't let it happen again!"

With that, he turned and slammed the door behind him.

As expected, the moment anything threatened Kiera's interests, his mask came off.

And I had been blind enough not to see it until now.

I took a deep breath and collapsed onto the bed, all strength drained from my body.

Several more years passed. Garrett had aged visibly, silver creeping into his temples. The once-vibrant businessman now looked like a man with nothing left. One day, years later, a television newsmagazine aired a profile of Garrett. On camera, his hair had gone completely gray, his eyes clouded. He sat in that empty mansion.Behind him, propped in the background, was the pair of ballet shoes I used to love most. The reporter, Claire Morgan, asked,"Mr. Whitmore, do you have any regrets? There are rumors that all of this was for someone you lost..."Garrett looked into the camera and was quiet for a long time.He was silent so long that the cameraman thought the feed had cut out before he finally spoke."The thing I regret most is losing someone I loved when I was young.""I haven't dreamed in years. Because all the dreams... are already broken.""I always assumed she'd be right where I left her, the way she chased me for ten years. But I forgot that once a heart shatters, you can't pie

Kiera stood stunned, as if it had never occurred to her that my letting go was not weakness, but indifference. She opened her mouth to say something more, but Garrett shook her hand off."Go home." Garrett didn't spare Kiera a glance. His eyes stayed locked on me. "Who I love should be obvious enough by now."Kiera ran off crying, the sharp click of her heels fading into the distance.Garrett didn't follow me.He just stood there, watching me walk through the theater doors.Through the heavy glass, he watched me pick up my rehearsal notebook and take my place before the young dancers. My expression was focused, my eyes bright, and I carried a presence he had never seen before.I marked the counts with one hand, leaning in now and then to adjust a dancer's form, a quiet smile on my lips.In that moment, Garrett finally understood. The girl who had once orbited him, her eyes full of worship and love, was gone. But he didn't leave.A bouquet of fresh white roses appeared at the theater en

His voice was hoarse. He pushed the car door open and stumbled out, reaching for my arm before freezing mid-motion.I stopped and looked at him, my expression perfectly calm. That face had appeared in my dreams countless times, jolting me awake every time. But now it was just a tired, unfamiliar mask that stirred nothing in me."How did you find me?"Garrett's eyes were red and brimming. His words tumbled out."I've been looking for you for so long... I transferred every ballet program I funded back home to an arts foundation. I mortgaged my Whitmore shares. Everything, just to find you.""Vivi, look. I've suffered too." He yanked up his pant leg, exposing a jagged surgical scar on his calf. "I hurt my leg in an accident while following a lead about you."I looked at the scar and almost laughed.I had once hidden the agony of a ruptured Achilles tendon, just so he wouldn't worry.Even when the pain had me drenched in cold sweat, I would smile and tell him I was fine. And now he was hol

And so Garrett changed. The charming, confident Whitmore heir was gone.In his place stood a quiet, sullen man, permanently cloaked in gloom. He started drinking. He would sit alone in the empty mansion, night after night, until dawn.Margaret Whitmore watched her son spiral and, desperate, set him up on one date after another, hoping someone new could fill the void. But every time, the moment someone mentioned Vivian or he caught a glimpse of eyes that reminded him of hers, he would fly into a rage and send them away. Before long, everyone knew: the Whitmore heir was broken, and no one dared go near.More public still were the missing-person notices that appeared on digital billboards across the city. Not an official one. Today was supposed to be our wedding day.White doves circled beneath a blue sky. A red carpet unfurled down the steps, the floral arch stood ready, guests filled every seat, and the champagne tower gleamed. There was just one person missing.I was the one missing.Garrett stood alone in the empty airport. He had assumed that even if it took a few days, she would come back the way she always had over the past ten years: red-eyed, voice soft and yielding, obediently slipping into her wedding dress to stand at his side.He could still hold her hand while keeping a place for Kiera in his heart. He thought her love was something he owned, something that could never be lost. Then Kiera swept in on a cloud of perfume."Garrett, what are you doing here?" Kiera pressed a hand over half her face, eyes red-rimmed, her voice small and pitiful. "The doctor says the burn my sister gave me might leave a scar.""Garrett, what if it scars?
