AVA

The bell rang for the first period, causing me to let out a tired sigh. I was about to shut my eyes while leaning into my locker for support when someone suddenly shoved at me.

My eyes snapped open, a wave of nerve stirring up in my body at the sight of Maddie Davis. She’s a senior, who happens to be hell bent on making the rest of my high school year a living nightmare.

“Where’s my assignment, dork?” She hissed, knocking the books out of my hand.

“I’m sorry… I didn’t have the time to go through it. You see there was a party at the house…”

She hit me across the face before the words even left my mouth.

“Who said I give a flying fuck about your reasons for not doing my assignment. What am I supposed to tell the teacher?”

“I’ll do it, give me a minute." I tried to appease her, dropping to my knees to pick up the books she knocked out of my hand.

Big mistake on my part because the next thing I knew, she slammed my head against the floor. My vision blurred for a second, making me clutch  my head from pain.

I felt something wet drip down my face, staining my shirt. Grabbing hold of my hair, she dragged me to my feet.

People gathered around, making no move to intervene as she slams me against the wall. Looking at her through my blurring vision, I knew I had to do something.

“Let go of me!” I cried out, shoving her with all my might.

Not giving her a chance to overpower me again, I got on top of her, slamming my fist into her face. Remembering all the time she had bullied me, by shoving my head into the toilet bowl.

Passing around my lunch, exposing the fact that I was on my period to the entire school. Remembering all this made me hit her harder.

“That’s enough!” Hearing a teacher’s voice, I stopped hitting her.

The teacher pulled me off of her, shaking his head at me in disappointment. I wasn’t known to get into fights, in fact I avoid conflict at all times. So, seeing the disappointing way he was looking at me, breaks me a little.

“Oh my god!” Maddie cried out, falling into the teacher’s arms. “She hit me, I hurt so much.”

“What? You started it. You attacked me!” I defended myself against her lies.

“Miss Heavens, I saw you on top of her, hitting her. What sort of exhibition of violence is that? As one of the school student ambassadors you know violence is frowned upon!”

“Are we seriously surprised? Her family are basically thugs. This is what they do, why are people like her permitted to interact with humans?” Maddie hissed, wiping her fake tears.

Her words stung deeper than a bee’s bite. Because that’s what they call me, the thug’s daughter. Or a criminal’s daughter.

“Maddie, that’s enough.” The teacher mutters in a stern voice.

“See? Are you all seeing this?” Maddie raised her voice, staring at the crowd like she’s in a school play or something.

“We aren’t safe around these thugs. Especially her! The Tukhas are at least nice and keep to themselves. It’s always the wanna be who goes around trying to intimidate people.”

She continues to cry. “My father may not be a thug but he is a judge, imagine what he will think of this!”

“That’s enough!” The teacher barked louder. “Miss Heavens will be punished according to the school law. There’s no need to get your families involved.”

Grabbing hold of my hand, the teacher pulled me away from the crowd, until we arrived at the principal’s office. She told him everything while I stood there knowing there’s nothing I can say to defend myself.

“Attacking your fellow student in the hallway? I don’t know how things are done at your house Miss Heavens but this is a school and we don’t tolerate such behavior. You are thereby stripped of your ambassador's title.”

Hearing the principal’s final judgment, tears steamed down my face. I nodded, accepting the detention note he handed to me. A week detention and my title revoked just for standing up for myself.

I couldn’t go to class after that. In fact for the rest of the day, I sat under a shade sobbing into my palm.

At some point, I sensed someone watching me, but when I looked in the direction, no one was there except for a gush of wind.

It wasn’t until school dismissal that I was forced to abandon my position. I waited at our usual spot for Asher.

However when he showed up, he seemed out of breath and alarmed for some reason.

“Hey, why are you panting so much? This better not be one of your stupid pranks. I am not in the mood for it,” I warned.

“What no! Caden has gone mad. He’s attacking a teacher, one of the students told me but I wanted to be sure. Is it true?”

I frowned at him. “What did I say about pranking me—?” I got interrupted by a loud noise.

Asher and I exchanged looks, then hurried in the same direction.  Arriving at the scene, my steps faltered just as Caden carried a chair and slammed it across the teacher’s head.

Blood splash everywhere, some landing on me in the process. Slapping my hands over my mouth to stop myself from screaming, I could only stare in horror.

Asher ran forward, pushing him away from the teacher as he left to grab another chair. The two struggles, while the teacher was passed out on the floor.

“What the hell?” The principal yelled, arriving at the scene with a couple more teachers.

I looked at Caden—no, I wasn’t sure who the person in front of me was. He is staring at the teacher with so much hate.

As if becoming aware of someone watching him, he looked in my direction. I choked, retreating backward and fleeing the scene. I didn’t make it far before puking somewhere nearby.

I heard footsteps behind me, thinking it was Asher, I turned to talk to him. However my voice died down at the sight of Caden’s blood soaked figure.

“Get away from me!” I cried, gripping my own shirt. “How could you do that? You attacked a teacher, our teacher!”

He blinked at me, then his eyes dropped down.

“How could you? I thought you were different. Turns out Asher is the different one, why can’t you be more like him?” I demanded, eyes flaring as he suddenly stalked toward me.

He slammed me against the wall, his hands closing around my throat. I choked, my eyes widening.

He reared back as abruptly as he had advanced toward me. His eyes also widened at me. When he took a step forward, I flinched, fearing the worse.

He retreated, then fled in the opposite direction. I sat down on the ground, touching my burning throat while trying to make sense of what just freaking happened!

AVA It’s been two weeks. Final exams are taking place. Seniors are getting ready for their prom. And I have gotten four invites from seniors to be their date to the prom. Yet Caden still hasn’t been found. The house has been in a gloomy state. Dad and Don Thame are hardly seen around these days as they spend the majority of their time looking for him. Asher on the other hand spends the majority of his time hooking up with girls. I knew it was a way for him to cope with the recent circumstances. The more time passed, the harder it became for me to convince myself that I wasn’t to blame for his disappearance. No one has pointed any finger at me yet, I dread the day they do. “I’m leaving. I’ll come back for you, I promise.” His last words still echo in my mind. Asher informed the family what I told him. At first Aunt Beatrix had looked at me suspiciously, demanding to know why Caden would come to me instead of Asher or Henshel. How was I to explain that I am as confused as she was

  • For Better, For Honour   Chapter 07 — Missing Freedom

AVA “Is it true?” Fallon, one of my friends and classmates asked, falling into steps beside me as we made our way to class.“I heard. Everyone is talking about it.” Our other friend, Avery interjects, joining the conversation. “Really? Words travel fast around here.” I sighed, feigning innocence, like that isn’t exactly the effect I was hoping for. We were about to enter the classroom, same time as Maddie. One would think she would pause for us to walk through, seeing that we got to the entrance first. She squeezed between us, forcefully creating a space for herself. Fallon attempted to go after her. I pulled her back, shaking my head.I couldn’t bring myself to care about her passiveness. Maybe it had something to do with how happy I am. Besides, she’s a senior, we only have to tolerate her for one period of class. By the time it was lunch hour, I wanted people to forget about my broken betrothal. They approached and offered consolations, one would think someone died with how th

  • For Better, For Honour   Chapter 06 — The Promise

AVA “I am floating on cloud nine, yeah, yeah, I’m floating on cloud nine—” I sang along with the blasting stereos emoting from my phone. Sophie sang along, passing the ingredients required to successfully bake delicious chocolate cookies. I paused in the act of whisking, using the whisker as a microphone instead. I extended it toward her, so she could also join in. She laughed, playing along. Short of breath due to excitement, I pulled away to focus once more on what we were doing. I was prepping the dough into the oven pan when the music abruptly cut off. “Mom…” I whine, storming my feet. “Hey, I’m glad you’re up and about. But do you have to be so loud? Don’t give me a migraine please.” She retorted, walking away. “Fine, I will reduce the volume.” I called after her, doing exactly that so she doesn’t have to come back in here and turn it off. “Hey miss cloud—“I whipped around at the sound of Asher’s voice. He stood against the kitchen door, watching us with a smile on his

AVA It’s one of the rare nights when Dad joins us for supper. Usually he’s working late. I knew the demanding nature of his job, it’s something I grew up with and accepted. Watching my parents interact from across the table, I smile. Sometimes it hurts that people have the wrong opinion about my parents and their marriage just because Dad happens to be the second in command of an empire. Don isn’t like that too, he treats Asher’s Mom with so much respect. It was one thing I admire from the world I was thrust into. “There’s something I want to say.” I blurted out before my courage failed me. “I don’t want to marry Caden Tuhka, not now… not ever.” My declaration was met with silence. When Dad dropped his spoon, it made a sound that made it seem like someone dropped a glass or something. “Why?” He finally asked, paying all his attention to me. “Isn’t it obvious? Ava is definitely concerned over his recent behaviour, as she should. This is someone she is going to spend the rest

AVA I knew my day was about to go bad when I saw Maddie approaching my locker. I brace myself for a fight, since I’ve already lost a title dear to me, there was no point in avoiding confrontation with her any longer. If she wants a fight, then a fight she will have! “Here, take your blasted earrings and stay the hell away from me!” She blurted out, thrusting two pairs of familiar earrings into my palm. I stared wordlessly at her, out of anything I ever expected her to say that never crossed my mind. Especially with tears streaming down her face. Puzzled, I looked at the earrings, dropping them on impulse the second I saw the blood stain. I ran after Maddie, catching up by her locker. “Maddie, are you okay?” I know it’s stupid to be concerned about her after everything she put me through, but I have never seen her so shaken up. She slaps my hand away, glaring at me. “What more do you want? My earrings? You might as well take it all because I can’t wear them anymore!” My confu

  • For Better, For Honour   Chapter 03 — Parallel

AVA The following day, everyone at school is still talking about the incident. It was mortifying, everywhere I went, people were whispering. The tension followed me all the way back home. Although my Dad didn’t say anything—at least to me. I could hear them also whispering about it. I ignored the whispering and went on the terrace, pacing around as I thought of the next design to work on. I heard a bird call behind me, it was the signal Asher always used whenever he wanted us to talk. I smile for the first time, seeing him on their own terrace. “What are you doing out here? Shouldn’t you be chasing some poor girl home?” I joked, dropping my hand. He laughs it off. “I don’t chase girls, they chase me. Who could blame them though? I am simply irresistible.” To further prove his point, he flexes his non existing muscles at me, kissing his non-existent becip. “What's going on? My parents are talking but no one is saying anything to me. Is he…” I swallowed, having a mild flashback
