Claire~

"...I will take care of you..."

Those five words echo through my head like a curse.

They are not new.

They are the exact same words he whispered against my lips last night before kissing me.

My fingers go cold.

The shattered champagne glass glitters across the marble floor while the room falls into stunned silence.

Several guests gawk. Probably wondering what's wrong with me.

A waiter hurries forward. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Westhall."

"I..." My lips part, but no words come out.

Arthur merely watch me with that infuriatingly amused smile, as though he alone understands why I've nearly collapsed.

"Claire?" Robert's voice is filled with concern. "Are you sure you're alright?"

"I..." Before I can answer, my vision blurs.

No. I can't let Arthur say anything. If he mentions last night...If Robert finds out...my father's company... Lily's treatment...

I shake my head. I can't allow anything to ruin the chance for my family.

"I think..." I force my breathing to become uneven. "...I'm feeling dizzy."

Robert's expression immediately darkens. "You don't look well."

"I... I'm sorry..." I whisper.

The room tilts—not because I truly feel faint, but because I desperately need an escape.

I allow my knees to weaken. And the last thing I hear before everything fades into darkness is Robert shouting my name.

"Claire!"

•••

When I open my eyes again, I'm lying inside the limousine.

The leather seats smells expensive. Robert sits beside me, one hand gently supporting me while my head rests on his shoulder.

"You're awake." His voice is softer than I expected.

"What..." I whisper. "What happened to me?"

Of course I know. I have to play it to perfection.

"You fainted."

"Oh..."

"You've been under enormous stress." He sighs. "I shouldn't have insisted you stay through the reception."

Guilt twist inside me. He believed I was genuinely sick.

"I've informed the guests that my wife isn't feeling well." He gives me a reassuring smile. "The celebration can continue without us."

I lower my eyes. "I'm sorry."

"There's nothing to apologize for."

He pats my thigh and I stiffen. Perhaps, he noticed because the rest of the journey pass in silence and no contact.

Outside the tinted windows, the city lights slowly disappear until the enormous iron gates of Westhall Estate comes into view.

My new home.

My breath catches as the gates open automatically.

The mansion isn't small. It's practically a palace. Water fountains dance beneath golden lights. Perfectly trimmed gardens stretch farther than my eyes can follow. Luxury cars line the circular driveway.

And servants stand in two neat rows outside the entrance. As soon as the limousine stop, they bow in perfect unison.

"Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Westhall."

The title hit me harder than the marble floor ever can.

Mrs. Westhall.

That's me now.

A title millions of women worldwide, both old and young coveted. Now it's mine but I feel no joy. But whether I like it or not, it's mine now.

Inside, the mansion is even grander. Crystal chandeliers hangs from impossibly high ceilings. Paintings worth millions decorates the walls.

Everything scream wealth. Everything except warmth.

The house is beautiful...and terribly lonely.

Robert dismiss the servants before leading me upstairs himself.

"I know today has been exhausting," he say gently.

And I nod.

He stops outside an enormous bedroom. "This will be yours."

Mine. Not ours. Mine.

A tiny wave of relief wash over me.

Once inside, he close the door behind him. My heartbeat immediately accelerate.

Is this it? Would he finally talk about consummating the marriage, even as 'I'm sick'?

Would he ask why I kept looking around during the wedding? Or maybe would he ask why I dropped the glass while Arthur was speaking?

Every terrible possibility rush into my mind at once. If he asks, I can't answer any of them without exposing myself.

Robert turns toward me. "Claire..."

My pulse thunders.

"I think it's important that we—"

That's it...

I don't wait to hear the rest of his words. My eyes roll back again and I collapse.

...

When I opened my eyes again, sunlight stream through the curtains. A middle-aged woman in a maid's uniform notice I'm awake.

"Oh, thank goodness." She hurries over. "Madam, how are you feeling?"

"...Better."

"The doctor said you suffered from exhaustion and emotional stress."

Exactly what I have hoped everyone would believe. Relief settles inside me as she helps me sit up.

"Mr. Westhall instructed us not to disturb you. He said your health comes first."

I blink.

He really believes it.

For the first time since the preparation of this wedding till now, I allow myself to breathe.

...

One day becomes two. Two becomes three.

The mansion remains strangely quiet. Robert left early every morning and returned late at night.

When he comes home, he only asks after my health. Whether I need anything. If I've eaten, before disappearing into his study.

He doesn't mention our wedding night. Never mentions sharing a room. Never even hints at consummating the marriage.

Arthur, on the other hand...Never came home. Every passing day ease the knot in my chest.

Maybe he lived somewhere else. Maybe I'll never see him again.

Maybe...

On the fourth afternoon, I sit alone on the balcony outside my room, staring across the endless gardens with a glass of sparkling wine untouched beside me.

The silence has become unbearable. No Lily to chase Jack around the house because it threw food on her bed. No stepmother filling the air around the house with her mouth-watering delicacies. No dad returning home with bags of gifts for his wife and daughters.

They haven't called me since. And that's because I turned my phone off since four days.

I pick the phone up and turn it on. Instantly, it vibrates with endless missed calls, notifications, and whatnots. With a sigh, I clear the window.

But just before I can dial my mother, a new message appears on the screen and my world freezes.

"You're my wife now," he begins. "Whatever relationships you had before today are in the past." My heart skips a beat. Is he... talking about Arthur and I? "I won't ask about your past," he continues calmly. "Nor do I have any interest in judging it." My breath catches in my throat. "All I ask is that, from this moment onward, you honor this marriage." He turns to face me. "Not because of our agreement, but because it's the respect two married people owe each other." Guilt crashes over me so violently that I can barely meet his eyes. If only he knew. If only he knew the very man threatening our marriage was his own son. Robert studies my lowered head for a moment before speaking again. "Can you do that?" By honor, does it include consummating the marriage? My fingers tighten around the belt of my robe. "I...I can." It's the truth. I want this marriage to work. I want to leave that disastrous night behind forever...for my family. Robert gives a faint nod, as

Claire~ "Arthur, please.." I whisper into the phone before I can even see his face. His handsome face fills the screen a second later, but there's nothing gentle about the look in his eyes. Behind him, I recognize the dimly lit hallway outside my bedroom. He wasn't bluffing. He was really standing outside the door! A chill races down my spine. Outside, I hear the bedroom door opening. "Ma— Sir, madam always has her jar filled with water before bed. I forgot to bring it earlier." It was one of the maids. My pulse pounds so loudly I can barely hear anything else. Robert's calm voice follows. "Leave it there." "Yes, sir." A few seconds pass. Then bedroom door closes again. I release the breath trapped in my lungs, but only for a moment before I turn to face to screen. Arthur hasn't taken his eyes off me. He has that smile dangling on his lips again. "Why are you doing this?" My voice breaks. Arthur lets out a quiet, humorless chuckle. "Doing what?" "You know exact

Claire~Arthur: Don't sleep with him. Else you'll regret it. "What is the matter?" Robert's voice slice through my shock. I was so engrossed in the notification that I'd completely forgotten he was standing right in front of me.My heart slams against my ribs. "I..."Panic surges through me as I instinctively press the side button and the screen turn black. "It's nothing."His brows knit together. "You screamed.""I was just..." My brain scrambles for an excuse. "Startled."How can I tell him that the culprit is his son? He studies me carefully as the silent stretches. I know I have to say something, otherwise he may start getting curious, and curiousity can be the biggest enemy for someone keeping a life-shattering secret like mine. "It's teasing messages from my friends," I say, slipping my phone into my pocket before he can ask to see it. "We have a group chat... They've been pulling pranks on me since the wedding."His expression softens with understanding. "Friends can be c

Arthur~ She ends dinner before everyone else and excuses herself. The moment the floor-to-ceiling dining room doors close behind Claire, the illusion of a happy family shatters. I set my cutlery down with a soft click, wipe my mouth with a fresh napkin the maid provided, then toss it onto the table. "Nothing tastes right anymore after she left." He knows who I meant. Unfortunately for him... not the person he thinks I'm talking about this time. The words land exactly where I intend them to. Because, my dearest father stiffens almost imperceptibly beside me. His grip on the knife tightens and his jaw ticks. For several long seconds, he says nothing, choosing instead to slice another piece of steak with that infuriating composure of his. "Are you going to do the same to this one too?" I grab my glass cup, twirling it softly with a curl of my lips. "...Your tiny, little wife?" Finally, he speaks without looking up. "Control yourself, Young man." A humorless lau

Claire~ A maid immediately fills my plate before I can ask, even though the sight of him, plus this sitting arrangement already drained my appetite. Robert gestures toward the dishes. "I had the chef prepare several recipes. Try everything and tell him what you like." "Thank you," I say, barely tasting the first bite. Every nerve in my body is focused on the man across from me. Too aware of even the way he chews and swallows, afraid that the next words he say might be about our little secret. I don't know if he's the vengeful type who can't take no for an answer. He could be against this marriage and intends to sabotage it because he doesn't want a stepmother as young as me or half-siblings to share inheritance with him... Because there's no way I'll believe he's in love with me that's why he's torturing me. While I'm unraveling, the man who has thrown my world into chaos is eating with effortless composure, answering Robert's questions about work and life as though nothing un

Claire~ It's an unknown number. The message is a gif. My brows furrow as I tap it open, waiting for the gif to load. Standing in front of a bathroom mirror, drenched in water that trails down his toned abs, is the man I have been trying so hard for days to forget about. He looks sinfully handsome. No, breathtakingly alluring. His dark hair is still damp and disheveled. Water beads cling to the sharp line of his jaw before disappearing down his neck. A white towel is wrapped loosely around his V line, revealing just enough to make the picture feel deliberately provocative. He wears the same wicked smirk as he stares at me through the lense. One hand reaches below his waist. Although what his hand is doing isn't captured, but with the slow movement of his hand, my mind claims to know what he is doing. My core stings and tingles as memories of that night sends heat all over me. My cheeks flush from the sheer embarrassment when I realize just how much control his action has
