I gripped the fabric of my worn dress so tightly until my knuckles hurt, staring at Thalorion across the space and silently praying to the Goddess who had never seemed to hear me before.
Please, Goddess. Let this be real. Let this finally be mine.
Thalorion was motionless. The firelight highlighted the sharp angles of his face and the crease on his brow. For a brief moment, I convinced myself he was simply stunned, just like I was. After all, he didn't expect it, right?
Maybe this was only the pause before everything changed.
Then he laughed.
It wasn't warm or happy. It was short, harsh, and mocking. He shook his head as if the situation itself was ridiculous.
"No," he said in a deadly tone. "There has to be a mistake," he continued, louder now, directing his words to the Council of Elders and the entire pack. "Look at her. Look at what you're asking me to accept as my mate. My Luna."
A low murmur rolled through the crowd, causing me to bend my head to hide the shame and humiliation I felt. If only the ground would open and swallow me right now, that was the only thought in my head.
“My lord," the Moon Guardian said carefully from her place beside the altar. "The moonstone does not make mistakes. The bond has already started to form. Rejecting it before witnesses carries serious consequences.”
“I don’t care!” he shouted, his handsome face twisting into something ugly. "I am the future Alpha of this pack. I will not be chained to a fat, mute, wolfless omega who can't even say her own name."
My head snapped up to meet his burning gaze. I was used to being called fat and mute, but Wolfless?
It was the cruelest insult because, in a way, it was true. The wolf everyone else possessed openly had never shown herself to me. Instead, I carried something dangerous inside me that I had spent eleven years burying.
"She is not fit to become my Luna." He continued coldly, his gaze travelling over my body. I felt exposed. Judged. As though everyone could see every flaw they believed I carried.
"I reject her. Before the Moon Goddess and before this pack, I reject Eirian Hale as my mate."
Pain exploded inside my chest. It was like an invisible thread that had connected us had just been sliced apart by someone. A gasp escaped me as my hand flew to my chest as if I could somehow hold myself together. Then my knees gave way. I caught myself against the nearest tree as the world blurred.
Then I heard laughter, loud, cruel laughter behind me.
"Did you see her face? She actually thought he wanted her."
“She's so pathetic.”
"As if the Alpha would ever choose that."
I dragged my gaze towards my parents. My mother stared at the ground, avoiding my gaze, her shoulders tense. My father had shifted a little to the side, creating a few inches of distance, as if that distance could separate him from the shame he felt.
Clearly, they weren't ashamed for me. They were ashamed of me.
That hurt more than the rejection itself.
My eyes found Serelith. She stood with her arms crossed loosely. When our gazes met, a relieved and satisfied smile curved her lips as if a mistake had finally been corrected.
The pain in my chest deepened and instantly melted into anger.
I was fuming from it. So much that I felt words rising in my throat. I wanted to speak. I wanted them to feel every ounce of pain they had given me, multiplied, returned to them tenfold. I wanted their laughter to die in their mouths. I wanted them to suffer.
My hands balled into tight fists, with my fingernails digging deep into my palms. My lips trembled as I opened my mouth for the words to come out, but Thalorion let out a shrill scream.
He grabbed his forearm and ripped back the sleeve of his ceremonial coat. A mark blazed on his skin, a bright, silver crescent moon wrapped in thorns. It glowed with the same light that had cracked the moonstone. The mark looked alive and was burning him from the inside.
"What is this?" he roared, staggering backward into his warriors. "Get it off me! Get it off!”
The Moon Guardian's face went pale. She struggled to her feet, clutching her staff. "The Moon Goddess has refused the rejection," she announced, her voice trembling. "She has marked him. This has not happened in three generations.”
Shock swept through the crowd. The Elders immediately began whispering among themselves.
"This cannot be undone," Elder Magnus said.
"We must inform the King at once," Elder Aldric replied.
I watched Thalorion struggle against a punishment I had never asked for. I almost smiled; a small part of me felt satisfied. For once, the world had decided to be fair to me.
Then the air shifted completely, giving way to a heavy, commanding presence that walked into the clearing before anyone even realized someone was approaching.
Conversations of earlier died mid-sentence. Even Prince Thalorion's piercing cries faded. Every head turned toward the direction of the Southern treeline, as a deep, calm voice broke the silence.
"Since my nephew refuses his blessing," the voice said, "I will decide what becomes of her.”
My heart slammed painfully against my ribs. Slowly, I turned.
And for the first time in my life, I saw the most feared Lycan King in existence.
Lycan Vorath Kane.
**Eirian's Pov**"You've been cooped up in that tower like a bird in a cage," Nessa said, adjusting my shawl over my shoulders. "The King said you're allowed to walk the grounds with a guard. You should enjoy it while it lasts, before he changes his mind." I’d been stuck indoors for two full days, and Nessa hadn't stopped badgering me. She’d tried repeatedly to convince me to get some fresh air in the training yard, and I finally agreed. The walls of my chamber had actually begun to feel suffocating for me with each passing hour. The morning air was cool and fresh as Nessa led me down the numerous, confusing corridors and out into the wide stone courtyard where I had first arrived.Warriors moved about in small groups. Some trained with wooden swords while others carried supplies to and fro buildings, their deep voices mixing with the sound of the clashing weapons as a guard trailed a respectful distance behind us.I breathed in deeply, glad to be somewhere other than the four walls
**Eirian's Pov**Nessa found me a few minutes after Kaelan left. She was gasping for air from searching the hallways."My Lady!" she cried out frantically, "Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Please don't scare me like that again. I was already panicking, trying to figure out what I’d tell the King. 'I lost your Luna on her second day'—he’d have my head for sure!"I reached out and squeezed her shoulder to calm her down, letting her lead me back to my chambers without arguing. My thoughts were still stuck on Kaelan's warning.Never ask him about his first mate.I had barely taken a few bites of the bread and honey Nessa brought when a knock sounded on the door. I raised my head just as the door opened. Vorath stood in the entryway, practically filling the entire frame in his usual black attire. How can someone love the colour black so much? His eyes scanned the room, then landed on me.Nessa scrambled to her feet, nearly knocking over the breakfast tray in her
**Eirian's Pov**I hadn't meant to fall asleep. After the huge shadow passed my window, I froze for what felt like hours. I kept staring at the glass, waiting for it to return, until my eyes grew sore and sleep claimed me. When I woke, the fire had burned down to glowing embers, and pale morning light slipped through the curtains.I remained in that state for a while, trying to convince myself the shadow had only been a dream, a trick caused by fear and exhaustion. But I knew better. Unable to stay in bed any longer, I got dressed in the plain blue gown Nessa had left on the chair. Then I tiptoed out of my room before fully deciding where I wanted to go. I just needed some fresh air. The truth was, I wanted to see the courtyard in daylight and prove to myself that no huge and terrifying creature was hiding out there. The halls of the castle were quiet in the early morning. I rounded one corner, then another. I was sure I remembered the path Nessa had taken yesterday. Instead, I fou
**Eirian's Pov**After Nessa left, I was alone at last. I finally took a proper look around the room that was now supposed to be mine.It was bigger than any room I had ever slept in. The bed alone was large enough to fit four of me, even with my size. Its deep blue cover was embroidered with silver thread that shimmered whenever the firelight shone on it. Its tall windows were curved along one wall, covered by light blue curtains. Beneath them was a polished writing desk with nothing on it. Even the rug under my feet was thick and soft, a stark contrast to the rough, cold floorboards in my old home. It should have felt like a gift, but it felt like a room set for someone else. There were no paintings on the walls and no trinkets on the desk. There were no personal belongings anywhere to show that anyone had ever lived here. I slowly walked around the length of the chamber, brushing my fingers over the smooth desk and the cold stone walls. When I reached the washstand beside a neat
**Eirian's Pov**The scream filled the air, and my whole body went stiff in the carriage seat.Vorath turned toward the sound at once, but unlike me, he was completely unbothered. He sat on his horse, listening with a face that showed nothing.Beside us, Kaelan let out a sound that sounded like a chuckle. "That’ll be Garrick again," he muttered, shaking his head. "He never remembers to duck." As if hearing his name, a young warrior stumbled out from behind the training grounds near the gate, clutching his arms and swearing loudly. Another warrior ran after him, laughing as he apologized. A woman stood nearby with her hands on her hips, scolding both of them for wasting good bandages over a training mistake. It seemed like it had only been an accident, but my heart kept pounding. My mind refused to calm down, even after my eyes saw there was no real danger. I placed a hand to my chest, trying to steady my breathing, but fear had already taken hold of me. After years of jumping at eve
**Eirian's Pov**The carriage rocked as it rolled along the winding road, and I placed a hand on the seat to keep my balance. For the first time in my life, I was leaving my home. The familiar green trees from home gradually disappeared, replaced by tall black pine trees that stood like guards on both sides of the road. I watched them through the small window, counting them the way I used to count my breaths whenever life became too hard to bear.My forearm still stung where the mate mark had burned into my skin as I rubbed the cloth covering it, wondering if it was supposed to feel like this.I remembered the look on Vorath's face at the altar. His eyes had widened for a brief moment before his usual cold expression slid back into place. I had seen surprise, maybe even fear, on his face. I wasn't sure which scared me more, the mark itself or the fact that it had frightened him too. A man like Vorath wasn't supposed to fear anything. He hadn't spoken to me since then.I could see him
