Beatrice didn't raise her voice.

She never had to.

"Mrs. Castellan seems to have forgotten she's a guest in this family." She folded her hands in her lap, her gaze settling on the housekeeper waiting with her head bowed.

"Should I speak to her, ma'am?" the woman asked cautiously.

"No." Beatrice smiled, calm enough to make the answer worse. "Since she's so determined to defend the staff, perhaps it's time she learned how this house really works."

The housekeeper hesitated, expecting another inst

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The waiting Game

"Lady Ashworth will see Mrs. Castellan shortly."The announcement had come nearly twenty minutes ago.Since then, Eva had done little more than stand near the edge of the ballroom, an untouched glass of champagne resting lightly in her hand as conversation flowed around her without ever quite including her.She could feel the waiting. It lingered in every curious glance that drifted her way, in every lowered voice that paused just long enough before moving on again. People weren't pretending not to watch anymore. They were watching openly."She's testing her," a woman murmured to the guest beside her, making no real effort to lower her voice."Lady Ashworth always makes people wait.""No," another replied, her tone carrying the confidence of someone who believed she knew the older woman well. "Only the ones she finds interesting."Eva's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the stem of her glass. She wasn't sure whether that was supposed to be reassuring or unsettling.----Ju

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Whitmore Gala

The media has been waiting outside since six this morning.Leo's voice cut through the quiet as the limousine slowed toward the estate gates.Eva turned to the window. At first, all she saw were flashes of light. Then the crowd came into focus.Reporters stretched along both sides of the driveway, cameras already raised, satellite vans parked bumper to bumper, photographers edging against the security barriers as though they expected the gates to open at any second. Her fingers stiffened around the small evening clutch resting in her lap."So..." she said quietly, never taking her eyes off the scene outside, "they're not here for the charity gala.""No, Mrs. Castellan."Leo's answer was gentle."They're here for you."---Victor paused beside the hallway mirror, straightening one sleeve before glancing toward Julian.Julian stood a few feet away, fastening the last button of his jacket. His attention seemed fixed on his reflection, though Victor doubted he was seeing it."For the past

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   One Night Before

Beatrice closed the jeweler's ledger herself, right there at the breakfast table, before anyone else could glimpse the page. The forged signature no longer interested her. The missing necklace did."I assume tomorrow is ready," she said to the housekeeper hovering nearby."Yes, ma'am.""And Mrs. Castellan?"The housekeeper hesitated. "She suspects nothing."Beatrice's smile settled into place, satisfied, unhurried. "Some lessons can only be learned in public."----Eva received a velvet jewelry box later that afternoon, delivered by one of the housemaids with instructions to place it somewhere safe until the gala."The family jeweler worked through the night, ma'am," the maid explained quietly. "The original heirloom couldn't be recovered in time, So Mr. Castellan instructed the jeweler to prepare another necklace immediately."It isn't part of the family's collection, but from a distance no one should notice the difference."Once the maid had gone, Eva lifted the lid.The necklace r

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Steps We Never Forget

"I've arranged for someone to prepare Mrs. Castellan before the gala."The announcement came just as breakfast was ending.Julian lifted his gaze from his cup."For what?"Beatrice slid an elegant business card across the table."Madame Céline."Her smile was warm enough to pass for kindness."She has guided the daughters and brides of some of the city's most respected families."Julian glanced at the card but made no move to pick it up."And what else is she known for?"A brief silence settled over the table.Beatrice folded her hands."She has exceptionally high standards.""So I've heard."Julian's voice remained even."I've also heard she enjoys reminding women when they fail to meet them."Beatrice's smile barely shifted."She's demanding.""She's humiliating."Julian pushed the card back across the table."Eva isn't meeting her.""Cancel it.""You're being dramatic—""I said cancel it." Julian stood, buttoning his jacket. "She will learn from me.Eva, who'd been silently watchin

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   Smile Before You Bleed

"Withdraw your wife from the Whitmore Gala."The words landed before the meeting had properly begun.Around the polished table, no one spoke.Julian finished signing the document in front of him before placing his pen aside."Say that again."One of the directors cleared his throat."One public mistake is all it takes. The restaurant incident has already done enough damage, and Lady Ashworth's table is the worst place to send someone inexperienced."Another director slid a printed report across the table."Let Beatrice represent the group instead. She knows the room. Mrs. Castellan doesn't."Julian glanced at the report but made no move to pick it up."Mrs. Castellan will attend."The answer was so calm that, for a moment, no one replied."Julian—"He rose from his chair, fastening his jacket with practiced ease."If anyone here would like to inform Lady Ashworth that the Castellan family is declining her invitation..." His gaze swept across the room. "You're welcome to do it yourselv

Stand up."Eva looked up from the guest list spread across her desk.Grandmother Isabella stood in the doorway, one hand resting on her cane, her expression as unreadable as ever."I beg your pardon?""You'll never survive the Whitmore Gala sitting down."Isabella stepped inside and quietly closed the door behind her.Her gaze shifted to the maid arranging dresses by the wardrobe."Give us a moment."The maid lowered her head and slipped out.Only when the door clicked shut did Isabella turn back to Eva."Stand."Eva rose slowly.Isabella circled her once, saying nothing. The silence lasted just long enough to make Eva wonder what the older woman had already noticed."Julian taught you names," Isabella said at last. "That's a good start."She stopped in front of Eva."Names won't matter if you walk into that ballroom asking permission to belong."Grandmother Isabella tapped the floor lightly with her cane."Straighten your shoulders."Eva did."Better.""Now walk to the window."Eva d
