BROTHERS

Jake moved from the hallway to the couch, his leg still tapping restlessly against the floorboards as he tapped the call icon one last time. The Saturday Night live show played on the screen, painting the apartment in an array of colors, but he wasn't watching any of it.

He just kept his attention glued to the screen of his phone, waiting.

The number at the top danced for a moment as it rang. After three more rings, it stayed silent then went straight to voicemail again.

“Fuck," Jak

PRACTICEBy the time the football team took the field, the bleachers were already filled with girls. They formed tight groups at the bottom with their phones in hands, giggling every time one of the players ran past them to take a drink of water.Dylan sat a little higher up, a few rows behind, with Lucas sitting next to him. He held a textbook over his lap, one he clearly wasn't going to read.He was just wasting time. That was the lie he told himself. He had been telling himself a lot of lies lately.Every few seconds, his eyes drifted back to the same place on the field–to the tall, broad-shouldered guy doing drills close to the center. Dylan caught himself looking at Logan and looked away immediately, only to do the same three seconds later."Okay." Lucas snapped his own book shut. "What happened back there?""What?" Dylan asked absentmindedly. "In class." Lucas cocked his head to one side, studying him. "My brother asking to partner with you. That's–Dylan, that's never happened.

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 94: THE GOSSIP

THE GOSSIPThe first thing Ethan noticed when he crossed through the school gates was that everybody was looking at him. Well, not openly–or most of them anyway. Staring was what people did when they thought they could get away with pretending they weren't staring at you. A few girls who gathered next to the entrance lowered their heads the second Ethan approached. Two boys near the bike racks exchanged a glance, whispered something to each other and quickly diverted their looks when Ethan caught them.Usually the morning rush of students towards classrooms, a few of them waiting by the cafeteria with their backpacks hanging over one shoulder and another group rushing to classes – everything seemed to be happening in a usual manner. But in addition to the usual chaos, there were whispers in the air everywhere.Ethan put on his glasses and went on.Blake walked by his side, his hands deep inside his hoodie pockets. He had hardly said anything to Ethan since the morning, after they left

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 93: THE TRUTH ABOUT LAST NIGHT

THE TRUTH ABOUT LAST NIGHTThe waiting was even worse than Ethan expected. He was sitting on the edge of Blake's bed with his hands clasped together, looking at the floor, as the same images flashed in his mind over and over – the old man, the gun, the flash, the body falling down. He gulped.Across the room, Blake was standing by the window looking outside, while Gina was sitting in the desk chair with her hands crossed over each other. Nobody spoke much since arriving at the Thompson house; everyone was waiting for someone to say something first. Finally, Gina sighed. "So they're just releasing them?"Blake turned around. "It seems.""That makes no sense.""It doesn't to me either."Gina looked at Ethan. "And what did the police tell you?"Ethan shook his head. "Nothing much. Just that the investigation is still ongoing.""Then why release them?""I don't know."Gina frowned. "Did they say anything about the footage?"Ethan hesitated. "No." Well, it wasn't exactly a lie – the police

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 92 THE TAPE DOESN'T LIE

CHAPTER 92THE TAPE DOESN'T LIEBlake stared at Ethan as another cop led him down the hallway to the front door. The officer before him called his name again and his eyes snapped up to him. Reluctantly, he stood up and stepped forward. “After you," the man said, the bush over his lips twitching as he smiled. He pushed the thick gray door wider and gestured inside. Blake paused for a moment before walking into the room. The place was smaller than he'd imagined. Every police interrogation he'd ever watched from the movies had made the rooms look intimidating, almost theatrical with its dark lighting, smell of cigarette smoke, detectives pacing around the suspect. This place was disappointingly ordinary. Gray walls surrounded him with a metal table bolted to the floor at the center and three plain chairs around it. High in one corner mounted a camera, its tiny red light glowing steadily. The air conditioner hummed quietly, filling the place with a cold that seeped through his jacket

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 91 THE FAVOR

CHAPTER 91THE FAVORJake sat alone in the interrogation room, fidgeting with his fingers on the metal table. It had only been a little while since they'd been taken here, but Jake felt like he'd been sitting there forever. His nose was sore from the blow he received from Aaron, and now and again Jake gently tapped the spot to test the damage. It was cold in here, so damn cold that the chill came from the floor more than anything else. He sat back in the chair and looked up at the ceiling, constantly wondering what would happen next. The thought about the drug store, the old man, the camera in the corner which had captured everything, but most of all about Aaron. He had thought that the police would arrest them the minute they discovered what had happened. Instead, they had taken them there, separated and questioned and left Jake alone in the room. The door creaked open and Jake turned to see an officer standing there, looking right at him."Jake Sanders?"Jake straightened. "Yeah?""

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 90: THE MORNING AFTER

CHAPTER 90THE MORNING AFTERSunlight spilled through the curtains in thin golden strips, cascading across the wooden floor before landing on the bed by the wall. It warmed the tangled sheets and one of the two figures under the duvet stirred with a groan. Jake's eyes fluttered open and his face immediately squeezed at the sudden brightness. For a few seconds, he stared at the ceiling, wondering why his entire body felt so heavy. Then the memories from last night slowly returned–Aaron’s call, the meetup at the drugstore, the blood…Gina. His head snapped to the side where Gina laid peacefully, her hair disheveled and her mouth slightly open. Then he looked toward the window where the sky outside was already bright. “It's morning already?" he muttered as he placed a palm over his eyes. “How long have I been out?" With a soft groan, he pushed himself up on one elbow, intending to climb out of bed. But before he could move any farther, an arm wrapped around his waist and slowly drag

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 27: UNDER THE BLEACHERS

UNDER THE BLEACHERSThe heavy grunts of the footballers practicing echoed across the field as Ethan dropped down on the grass beneath the bleachers. He spread his notebook across his laps, flipping through the pages as he sipped his soda. The metal beams above him rattled occasionally whenever some

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   Chapter 6: THE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET 2

THE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET 2The name hit Ethan like a brick and he found himself choking on his own breath. His head snapped up instantly to Tom standing a few feet away. “…Huh?” was all that slipped past his lips as his eyes widened. Tom just shrugged again like it was nothing. "He met me after

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   Chapter 5: THE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET 1

THE HOUSE DOWN THE STREETThe glass door slid shut behind Ethan as he stepped into Tom's lawn. Thin sprinklers scattered lazily across the grass sent arcs of water glistening in the late afternoon sunlight, and the air held a faint smell of wet grass and mud. Somewhere over one of the fences, a dog

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 1: DREAMS, DESKS AND DIRTY THOUGHTS

DREAMS, DESKS AND DIRTY THOUGHTSHis hands were everywhere and his kisses were like fire, burning with passion. Blake ran his hands over Ethan's body before pushing him hard, pinning him against the locker. The cold, metal surface bit at Ethan's skin through his shirt but he didn't mind it. He wan
