Chapter Two: He Came Home With Her

last update publish date: 2026-05-12 22:39:08

I am still at the table when morning comes.

I did not plan to stay. At some point in the night I told myself I would get up, clear the plates, blow out what was left of the candles, go upstairs and take the blue dress off and lie down like a person with some dignity. I told myself that somewhere around two in the morning and then again around four. I am still here at nine, sitting in the same chair, in the same dress, with the same two plates in front of me and the wax from the candles hardened into flat cold rings on the tablecloth. The wine has been open all night. The food on his plate has dried at the edges and smells of nothing anymore.

I look like exactly what I am. A woman who waited.

I hear the key in the front door at nine twelve.

Damien walks in.

He looks good. That is the first thing I notice and I hate that I notice it. Fresh shirt, jacket over one arm, hair neat, like a man coming back from something pleasant rather than a man who did not come home all night. He steps into the dining room and his eyes move across the table, the two plates, the melted candles, the untouched wine, and something flickers across his face. Not guilt. More like mild inconvenience. There and gone in less than a second.

“You stayed up,” he says.

“I waited,” I say. “There is a difference.”

He sets his jacket over the back of his chair. “You should not have gone to all this trouble, Amelia.”

“It is my birthday, Damien.”

“I know.”

“You know.” I look at him steadily. “You know, and you did not come home. You did not call. I called you three times and you did not pick up once.”

“I had something important to take care of.”

“Something important.” I almost laugh. Almost. “So going out with a woman is more important than your wife’s birthday. That is what you are saying to me right now.”

He goes quiet for a second.

“Sophia sent me the link,” I continue. “By midnight it was everywhere. Every photo, every video, the rooftop, the dinner, all of it.” I reach for my phone and place it on the table between us, the I*******m post still open on the screen, his face laughing in the fairy lights, her stomach round and unmistakable at his side. “So yes. I saw.”

He looks at the phone. Not with shame. With the expression of a man who was already on his way to this conversation and has just had it made easier for him.

“Actually,” he says, “that is exactly what I came home to talk to you about.”

I stare at him. “Is it.”

“Yes.” He pulls out his chair and sits down for the first time since he walked in. He folds his hands on the table, calm and deliberate, and looks at me with the settled certainty I have learned over five years means a decision was made long before this moment.

“Then talk,” I say.

He pulls out his chair and sits down for the first time since he walked in. He folds his hands on the table and he looks at me with that calm, settled certainty that I have learned over five years means a decision has already been made in a room I was not invited into.

“Her name is Vanessa,” he says. “She has been in my life for some time. She is six months pregnant with my child.”

The words reach me slowly. One at a time.

“She will be moving in here,” he continues, his voice even, measured, the tone he uses in boardrooms when the meeting is a formality and the outcome is already decided. “The baby will be raised in this house. I need you to be reasonable about this, Amelia. This is already decided.”

I do not speak.

The silence stretches out between us and inside it I am doing something quiet and private, I am taking every single word he just said and pressing it flat, making it fit, making it real, because my brain keeps trying to reject it the way a body rejects something foreign.

Six months.

She is six months pregnant. Six months of knowing. Six months of sitting across from me at this table, in this house, in this marriage, and saying nothing. Six months of watching me cook and wait and try and say nothing.

The burn starts behind my eyes before I can stop it. I do not want to cry in front of him. I have told myself I will not. But the tears come anyway, quiet and unstoppable, sliding down my face one after another while I sit perfectly still and look at him. I do not wipe them. I let them fall. I want him to see exactly what his calm measured boardroom voice has done to the woman who ironed this tablecloth yesterday afternoon.

He looks at the table.

“So those photos,” I say, and my voice only breaks slightly, just at the edges. “Last night. You were celebrating this. While I was here calling you. While I was sitting at this table in this dress waiting for you to come home. You were out celebrating the fact that she is moving into my house.”

“Our house,” he says quietly.

The correction lands like a slap.

And then I hear it.

Footsteps in the foyer. Slow. Unhurried. The sound of someone who has no reason to rush because she already knows she is welcome.

She steps into the doorway.

Vanessa.

Dark hair loose, a soft cream blouse, her stomach round and full and impossible to look away from. She is more beautiful in person than the photos showed, and she stands in the doorway of my dining room and looks around slowly, taking in the room the way someone takes in a space they are already planning to rearrange.

Her eyes find me.

She smiles. Warm. Unbothered. “You must be Amelia,” she says softly, like we are being introduced at a garden party. Like she is not standing in my home at nine in the morning while I sit here in yesterday’s dress with tears on my face.

My eyes drop to her hand.

A key. My front door key, hanging loose in her fingers. Worn at the edges, the silver dulled with use. Not new. Not something cut yesterday. This key has been in her hand before. More than once.

A fresh tear slides down my jaw.

I look at the key and then I look at Damien and he holds my gaze and he does not flinch, does not look away, does not offer me a single word. His face is still. Decided. The face of a man who stopped wondering whether this was right a long time ago.

“How long,” I say. My voice comes out barely above a whisper. “How long has she had that key.”

“Amelia.” His voice carries that familiar edge, the one that means he thinks I am about to make this difficult.

“How long, Damien.”

He does not answer.

And his silence tells me everything the worn silver key already suggested. This was not last night. This was not something that happened in a rush of bad decisions and champagne on a rooftop. The key is old. The arrangement is old. All of it, the timeline, the plan, the decision that she would come here and live in this house and raise his child under this roof, all of it was already in motion while I was cooking his favourite meal and lighting the candles I had been saving since our honeymoon.

He did not forget my birthday.

He spent it finalising the details of what came after me.

And he has not said sorry. Not once. Not a single word.

Ethan was at the gate where we had left him.He looked at Noah's face when we came through and did the thing he always did, read it quickly and completely and then put the reading away without making it a subject of conversation because Noah's face was his own and Ethan had never once treated it as data he was entitled to comment on uninvited."Good?" he said."Productive," Noah said.Which, from Noah, was the highest available rating. We walked home. The three of us. The cold bright Saturday carrying on around us, other people with their dogs and their coffees and their entirely unaware Saturday business, and Noah in the middle with his notebook under his arm and the bread bag now empty and the particular quiet of a child who had done something significant and was still inside the feeling of it.He did not talk. Not on the walk. Not in the elevator. Not while he took his coat off and put his bread bag in the bin and washed his hands at the kitchen sink with the methodical thoroughnes

  • HIS MISTRESS, MY REVENGE   Chapter Eighty-Eight: One Hour in the Park

Noah told me he was ready for the questions on a Wednesday. Not with preamble. Not with the careful weight he had carried to the kitchen table the first time. Just looked up from his homework at eight-fifteen in the evening and said, "I want to go back. I have the questions written down now."He showed me the notebook page.Seven questions. Numbered. Neat handwriting. The kind of list that had clearly been added to over several weeks, a question here when something occurred to him, another one there, the whole thing built slowly and deliberately the way Noah built everything that mattered.I read them without comment."Saturday again?" I said."Saturday," he said. "Same park. Same bench for you." He paused. "Same bread. The data was inconclusive and I want to run the experiment again while I have someone to help."I almost smiled."I will let him know," I said.Damien's response this time came in three seconds.I know the place. I will be there.Saturday arrived cold and clear, the sp

  • HIS MISTRESS, MY REVENGE   Chapter Eighty-Seven: The Day They Meet

I came back from Milan on a Sunday.Noah met me at the door the way he always met me when I had been away, coat still on, bag still on my shoulder, him already talking before I had fully crossed the threshold. The class had gotten a hamster named Biscuit which he felt lacked imagination. Ethan had made pasta twice. A boy in his class had lost a shoe on a field trip in circumstances he described as complicated.I unpacked. Made tea. Listened to all of it.And then, that evening, after dinner, after Ethan had gone to sit in the living room and it was just the two of us at the kitchen table with the remains of the meal between us, Noah looked up from the last of his food and said, with the specific weight of someone who had been carrying something carefully for a while and had decided tonight was the right time to put it down, "I think I am ready."I looked at him."To meet him," he said. Plainly. Without drama. "I have been thinking about it since I said I would and I think I am ready n

  • HIS MISTRESS, MY REVENGE   Chapter Eighty-Six: The Merger's Final Terms.

(Amelia's POV)Sophia found out within eleven minutes.I know this because Olivia timed it, unprompted, simply because she found the whole thing delightful and wanted a record of exactly how fast the news had travelled from boardroom to best friend. Eleven minutes from yes to Sophia bursting through my office door without knocking, having abandoned an actual client meeting, with the specific wild energy of a woman who had just received the most important piece of information of the entire year and could not be expected to behave normally about it.She grabbed my hand.Looked at the ring.Made a sound that was not quite a scream and lived somewhere in the specific frequency reserved for genuinely overwhelming joy."You said yes," she said. "In front of the entire board. He asked twice." She looked up at me, eyes bright. "Twice, Amelia. The man asked you to marry him twice because the first time was not enough proof for him that he meant it.""I know," I said. Smiling more than I had sm

  • HIS MISTRESS, MY REVENGE   Chapter Eighty-Five: What He Carried Home

(Damien's POV)I held it together until the car. That was the thing about composure, I had learned across these past months with Dr. Webb, it was not a single decision you made once and then maintained effortlessly. It was a series of small decisions, made over and over, sentence by sentence, room by room, and somewhere between the boardroom and the elevator and the underground car park I had simply run out of the ones I had left for the day.Nathan offered to drive me.I told him I was fine.He looked at me the way he looked at me when he knew I was lying and had decided, out of twenty years of friendship, that some lies were allowed to stand unchallenged in the immediate aftermath of something this large. He squeezed my shoulder once and let me go.I do not remember much of the drive.I remember the boardroom more clearly than I remember the route home, which told me something about where my mind had actually been for the past hour even while my hands were apparently doing the mecha

The box had been in the kitchen drawer for three weeks.I had not moved it. Had not taken it out to look at it in private moments the way I half expected I might. It simply sat there, beside the spare keys and Noah's permission slips, exactly where I had placed it, and Ethan had never once asked about it or referenced it or made me feel the absence of an answer. The Sinclair Group quarterly review fell on a Thursday. It was Damien's first formal presentation since the probationary terms had been set, the full board assembled, the advisory council present, myself at the head of the table in the chair that still occasionally surprised me when I sat in it. Ethan had been invited as an A.C. Holdings representative, which meant he was there in the room too, in a suit instead of his kitchen clothes, looking entirely composed in a way that still managed to find me across a crowded boardroom within the first thirty seconds of walking in.Damien presented well.I noted it clinically, the way I

I drove home from the hospital faster than I should have. Not recklessly.
