CHAPTER THREE

Aria looked at Jeffery who didn't even look at her. His eyes were locked on Valerie like she was the most important thing in the world to him.

Valerie looked at her with a smirk that disappeared so quickly it was like she imagined it.

She and Jeffery were so entangled together and Aria watched as everyone looked at both of them with what resembled adoration.

They never looked at her and Jeffery like that. They always looked at her like she was some intruder.

Knowing she wasn't loved by anyone in the family was still okay. She could live with it. But seeing the family that she was part of for three years having no regard for her, hurt her more than she would have liked.

“Baby tell everyone.” Valerie blushed as she leaned into Jeffery.

“We have decided to sell the house. My Valerie doesn't like staying in used spaces so we got a new house closer to this place.” Jeffery said.

Staying in used spaces? Aria thought.

“Oh my God! You both will be closer to home!” Mrs. Watson exclaimed cheerfully.

“Girl, I get the used space feeling. It's like it has been contaminated.” Mercedes, Jeffery's sister said to Valerie who nodded.

They are calling my home. The place that I considered my home for the past three years used contaminated space?

Aria felt embarrassed. She looked at her nails blinking back tears.

Jeffery whispered something into Valerie's ears which made her blush while he kissed her forehead.

Aria decided she had heard enough and stood up.

“I.. um …I'm going over to the garden for a bit of fresh air,” she muttered as she walked quickly before tears dropped from her eyes.

Why did Jeffery bring her here? Is it to show her that he could be the man she has always wanted but not for her?

She thought back to when the news broke that Jeffery got married to her instead the entire media and social circle were all talking about it. Coming up with conspiracies of how she charmed him.

Some even said she trapped him with a baby.

She cleaned her face and laughed as she thought about how ridiculous it was.

When she got back inside, she saw how happy everyone was.

“You need to rest Valerie. You are carrying Watson's heir.” Mrs. Watson said and everyone nodded or smiled in agreement.

Valerie and Jeffery smiled at each other. They were the perfect couple.

Aria stood at the end of the room trying to be invisible when Jeffery glanced at her. He could see how much she was fighting tears.

He had never loved Aria, but in that moment he felt pity for her.

She was a good woman and deserved better but he could not give it to her because he already gave his heart to Valerie.

He knew she loved him and prioritized him when they were married and he tried to do the same but he could not. Because he had Valerie and now she is back into his life.

When Valerie first decided to take up a full time modelling job in Milan, she had begged him to wait for but his grand mother had other plans and would have cancelled the merger that would have brought the company millions in profit.

So, he had to marry Aria and when Valerie found out, she called him and she was so devastated.

Now that his grandmother's death played out in time with Valerie's return, he had to make use of the opportunity that was presented to him to get the love of his life back.

He was surprised when he saw her two months back, she said that she had a business in the city and she would be around for a while.

They were still very attracted to each other and connected so fast, she got pregnant. They immediately told their parents and they all came to the conclusion that he should marry Valerie.

Valerie also wanted him to get rid of Aria. She wanted to be the only partner he had and she was very uncomfortable with the thought of him being with her sister.

He was still questioning why Aria was here. His parents had called him that morning and told him to bring Aria along with him to the family's house even though they were celebrating him and Valerie getting back together.

Are they trying to make everything look like the way it was before?

“Jeffery.” His mother called out to him as she held Valerie's hands looking cheerful.

“We should start preparing for the engagement party. It is happening soon, right?” She asked and Jeffery nodded in agreement.

“We will host it in a grand style.” His father added and they all agreed.

Aria decided that she had heard enough and decided to leave the house.

She took a final look at the house before walking away.

***

Valerie and Jeffery went back home together.

“I enjoyed spending the day with you,” Valerie said, placing a kiss on Jeffery's cheek.

She winked at him and tried to move away when he pulled her and kissed her deeply.

“Jeffy, I need you inside me,” Valerie moaned and Jeffery carried her to the bedroom.

While they were about to lay on the bed, his phone started ringing.

They ignored it but it started again.

“Ugh. Why now? Please pick it so it can stop ringing,” Valerie groaned.

Jeffery pulled away from her and picked up the call.

“Hello? What do you want?” He asked.

“Mr. Watson? I'm calling from the Aurora specialist hospital. Your wife is here in special care and she needs you here urgently.”

“I don't have a wife.” He said coldly before ending the call.

“Who was that?” Valerie asked before he could answer his phone started ringing again.

“Hello?”

“Jeffery, I don't know what that silly girl has done again but you are needed instantly in the hospital. I am on my way there now.” His mother said.

“Okay mum, I'm on my way.” He ended the call and started dressing up.

“What is going on? Where are you going?” Valerie asked.

“I just got a call now that Aria has been hospitalized and I need to be there immediately.”

He confronted Roman the morning after. Not because Roman was the first thing on his mind the first thing on his mind was Aria, was always going to be Aria in the foreseeable future but because Roman was the piece of the situation he could do something about immediately, and doing something about Roman was also the thing he needed to do for his own understanding of the complete picture.Roman was waiting for him.He was in the guest suite, sitting in the chair by the window with the particular quality of someone who has known a conversation was coming for a long time and is not, when it arrives, surprised. He looked at Adrian without the performed warmth, without the smooth social ease of the preceding weeks. He looked at him with whatever was actually there, which was something complicated and tired and not entirely without guilt."You know," Roman said."I have known for a while," Adrian said. "I have been completing the picture."Roman nodded. He looked at his hands. "She left," he

He had intended to reveal the news to her that night. 3 weeks planning, not like he prepared for work meetings, with a detailed agenda and expected objections and handy responses. He was planning it the way he planned his most treasured things: by living with them until they became clear matters, thoroughly analyzing them during the internal inventory he maintained, examining them from every perspective until the form was perfect. The form was perfect. The restaurant was booked. The words were arranged not set down because that's not how he rolled with authenticity rather a prepared person arranges an authentic thing: knowing the sequence, knowing the crucial points, knowing that the delivery will have to be genuine and off the cuff but trusting that his prior rehearsal will prevent him from losing the thread when the time is right. He would confess that the contract was a mistake. He kept a secret from her that night.N

The collection was named Inheritance. She had written the title down on the program documentation three months ago, before she had even planned on leaving, before she had overheard the words, before anything of the after had happened. The reason she had decided on the name was because it was truthful everything that she had created had been based on what her mother had left her, and that was definitely something to give a name to.She did not change it. The title still fitted. The truth does not become less true if everything else changes. When she got to the Institute, it was already ten o'clock in the morning. The exhibition was scheduled at five o'clock. What she managed to do in those seven hours was a reflection of the specific and efficient worry of a person who has something major happening and who, at the same time, needs to be doing something: last tasks on the clothing, the hemming of the dress which she had postponed for two weeks yet the dyeing of the but the organization

The entire planning took three months. After all, she was deliberate about it. From working through her mother's documentation and by building nine months of things carefully herself, she realized that doing something right was a better option than doing it fast. More often than not, the difference between them was one's willingness to be patient at the stage of preparation. She carried on as if it was a usual day. Although it was a bit challenging for her at first, she actually found that she was quite capable of compartmentalizing her thoughts and feelings. She went to the Institute, spent hours in the collection, shared the breakfast table with Adrian, and spoke about the collection, the investigation, and the day-to-day routine. Surprisingly, she was able to manage all of this without letting the fact of her planning change the face of their life.No one was informed about it. Not Marianna only much later, when the plan was more advanced. Not Cassandra, who would have told Adrian.

What Aria Overheard Choosing to overhear wasn't part of her plan. She had been going to him this movement has become, since November, one of the regular activities of her nights. Sometimes without a clear goal, sometimes simply for the pleasure that: he must be in this apartment and I want to be with him. This feeling had come quietly and unannounced, the very way the most important feelings come, and for weeks she hadn't even thought about it while following them. January, Tuesday evening. She was done in the studio, had washed hands and got changed out of work clothes, and was heading through the penthouse to his study, since the study light was on and that would be the place where he was.The study door was left open. She wasn't eavesdropping. She didn't pause. Before she even had a moment to decide whether to look for words, words came to her."I regret the marriage." His voice. It had a calm yet sharp tone, the kind of calm yet sharp one has when they are making a really hard dec

December was packed. The collection was almost ready and so the team had to focus all their attention on the remaining details those tiny things that can be overlooked here and there but when taken altogether that make the difference between a good piece and a perfect piece. The Anderson trial had made news which meant the journalists took an interest in everyone connected to it which meant that she and Adrian had to handle the very specific twists and turns of being secondarily newsworthy to both of them very much disliked and felt quite uncomfortable with. The wrist was mending which explained why she was slowly getting back to the physical tasks of producing art which also meant that the jacket was developing very cautiously and in a very step-by-step manner of a thing properly done rather than quickly thrown together.Throughout all of this, Luca was there. She had not, at least not very much in the first few weeks after the accident, during the funeral time she had treated the b
