Chapter 8

Author: Flightless Mii
...

A company gala was in full swing.

As Daniel's companion, Siena dressed up and clung to his arm.

Kimberly, on the other hand, hadn't even received an invitation. But she came anyway with a single purpose: to deliver the custody waiver.

Her flight was scheduled to depart in just two hours, and time was of the essence. She navigated through the crowded ballroom for any sign of Margaret.

Then the stage lights flared dramatically, revealing Daniel standing at the center, flanked by Siena and Henry.

The employees whispered below, "Guess the rumors are true. Our boss is a romantic, always tied to the same woman."

"Isn't he already married?"

"Yeah, to some small-town nobody. No feelings there. Siena is his true love."

Kimberly ignored the whispers and continued her search. She even checked the stairwell, but Margaret was nowhere to be seen.

As she turned back, Siena's voice came. "Did you even get an invite? Only one companion is allowed per guest. Guess who won? Me."

Her gentle façade was dropped, replaced by a twisted expression of triumph and malice. She hissed, "Daniel will always pick me over you."

Kimberly was unfazed. "I don't have time for your silly games."

Siena smirked, then shoved her hard.

Kimberly lost her balance, tumbling down the stairs and crashing to the floor. The custody waiver was still grasped tightly in her hand, the paper crumpling under the force of the fall.

Pain surged through her body, old wounds flaring with the new. She grunted in agony, unable to move.

The noise startled everyone in the hall.

Daniel rushed up, pausing at the scene. Then he rushed to her side and carefully helped her up.

"What happened? How did you end up like this?" he asked with a frown.

Kimberly looked back at Siena, who seemed unrepentant at the top of the stairs. Far from it, she whined, her voice trembling with feigned pain, "Ow, my ankle hurts!"

"Dad, Siena's foot is hurt!" Henry shouted. "Check on her!"

Daniel hesitated, looking at Kimberly with concern, but she forced herself to stand still.

"Don't worry about me," she said evenly.

Daniel faltered. "I'll check on her and come back fast."

Kimberly shook her head, finally finding Margaret in a quiet corner of the ballroom.

Margaret gasped at her state. "What happened? You're a mess, with blood on your clothes."

Kimberly brushed it off and handed over the custody waiver. "Here, take it."

Margaret skimmed through the document and sighed, "Maybe I shouldn't have signed you to this deal in the first place. We dragged you in and left you like this. We failed you. You can go."

Kimberly's voice trembled with emotion. "Thank you."

...

She boarded the plane, battered but joyful.

She was free, no longer bound by the contract. Finally, she belonged to herself again.

The morning light streamed through the window. Her life shed its darkness, and a bright future waited for her ahead.

..."Two years ago, the Carter Group fell apart. New companies squeezed them out, and now they're smaller than minor firms. These properties were sold off," Hannah explained.Kimberly's eyes widened in shock.Since leaving the hospital, she hadn't contacted Daniel and had focused on her life abroad. Thus, she was unaware of the Carter family's collapse.Grace suddenly said, "Dad, I feel sick. I might throw up."Gary felt her forehead. It was burning, and he was alarmed. "Maybe it's the weather. She has caught a cold."Kimberly jumped up, rushing to take Grace to the hospital. The doctor prescribed fever medicine, and Grace fell asleep in Kimberly's arms, looking heart-meltingly tender.Just then, a figure came out of the psychiatry room. It was none other than Daniel.Six years apart, he was no longer sharp. His face was weary, and his hair was streaked with white.Seeing her, he paused and forced a smile. "It's been a while.""Indeed," she replied.Meeting again like this

...The police arrived, handcuffing Siena. Her face was ashen, but she didn't resist.Kimberly grabbed Daniel's hand, anxious. "Hang on. The ambulance is coming."Daniel, with all his strength, rasped, "I'm sorry. I owed you and had to repay it."Ten minutes later, he was rushed to the ER. Hours of surgery finally stabilized his condition.Kimberly delayed her return to Asteron, staying to care for him as she once did.He opened his eyes, and the first person he saw was her. She gave him water and checked on him.He stared at her silently, his tears rolling onto the white pillow. Choking, he said, "It's been so long since we've been together calmly like this."Kimberly said nothing, rising to call the doctor. He called after her, "Thank you. I won't bother you anymore."His voice was hoarse, tinged with sadness and regret. Kimberly paused, but she didn't turn back. After informing the doctor, she left the hospital. Now that Daniel had woken up, she felt no need to stay the

...Daniel was stunned by the news.Henry was his everything now. Without Henry, he might not want to live, and now Henry was gone.Kimberly overheard the call. She said, "Don't panic. Ask if anyone around you picked him up."Daniel immediately asked around but found no leads. Then a message arrived: [Your kid is with me. Want him alive? No police. Bring five million dollars in cash.]It included the address of an abandoned factory.Daniel trembled. "Henry has been kidnapped."Kimberly was surprised but stayed calm. "Do as they say. I'll go with you."At the end of the day, Henry was still her son. Even though they had cut ties, she couldn't let him die like that. They got the cash ready and headed to the factory. It was remote. Even if they called the police, it would take them at least half an hour to arrive.Kimberly scanned the area, wondering if this was a scheme of revenge or pure greed. The question was figured out when she saw Siena inside.Standing beside Henry,

...After the business meeting, Kimberly stepped out to see a flashy Maybach. The one leaning against the car body was none other than Daniel.Kimberly blinked, surprised by his appearance. She hadn't told anyone about this deal, yet he found her there.Spotting her, he hurried over. "Kimberly, can we talk?"Kimberly hesitated for a moment before getting into his car. There were things she needed to make clear with him. While driving, he glanced sideways at her. "I hear that you founded a novel company."She nodded but remained silent.Undeterred, he continued, "How did I never notice your interest in writing before?"Kimberly gave a wry smile. "Well, it's because you never cared to know me."Daniel paused, ready to explain, but they arrived at their destination. In the coffee shop, they ordered drinks.Kimberly took a sip, and Daniel began, "The past year has been tough for both Henry and me."She felt nothing about it. "Oh? Well, I'm doing way better than before."Danie

...Kimberly looked at Henry, now taller, and shook her head. She'd raised him with endless patience and love, but he'd repeatedly pierced her with harsh words. She had watched him grow from a tiny baby to walking and then to kindergarten, only for him to give her gifts to someone else.He viewed Siena through rose-tinted glasses while judging her with malice. Her love for Henry was real, but so was her disappointment. In a child's world, a simple apology might fix everything, but for adults, apologies solved nothing. She looked at Henry seriously. "Henry, an apology is the least useful fix. And stop calling me Mom. Since the contract ended a year ago, we're no longer mother and son."Henry didn't fully understand, but he grasped one thing. Kimberly didn't want him anymore.Standing helplessly by the road, he started wailing.Daniel wept too. After a while, he managed, "Kimberly, I'm sorry. I didn't know Siena was like that. I shouldn't have hurt you repeatedly because of her.

  • Happiness Never Knocks   Chapter 16

...Kimberly stiffened as the very thing she dreaded happened.Henry clung to her leg, refusing to let go despite her efforts to pry him away. His attitude was a stark contrast to before when he always scorned her presence. In the end, she managed to push him away. Her expression was cold and distant.Henry was confused by her indifference. She used to pamper him so much. She had been absent from his life for a whole year now. When she was finally back, he received nothing but her rejection.Tears welled up in Daniel's eyes. He croaked, "Kimberly, where have you been all this time? I searched everywhere but couldn't find you. Henry and I miss you so much. Come home with us."His tone was earnest, but Kimberly was untouched."Daniel, come on. You know we can't go back," she said.Unconvinced, he reached for her hand, but she stepped back. "Things ended a year ago. Please respect that."Her icy tone felt foreign to him. The old Kimberly was always gentle and had never spoken ha

...Siena's face glowed with triumph.Henry shouted, "Dad and Siena are the best! My mom is terrible! Won't even let me have ice cream!"His words drew stares from passers-by, and they pointed at Kimberly.Kimberly felt a pang of disappointment. All her care for him over the years was for nothin

...Daniel froze, unaccustomed to Kimberly's refusal. She had always bent over backward to accommodate even his most unreasonable requests. But now, her defiance hung in the air, a palpable shift that left him at a loss.Siena sighed affectedly, "My bad. I'm already a hassle staying here, and now

  • Happiness Never Knocks   Chapter 3

...The next morning, Kimberly rose early. She and Daniel always slept in separate rooms, partly because he hadn't fully accepted her into his life and partly due to his germaphobia, which barred others from his space. After washing up, she drove to her friend's law firm and shared her situation.

  • Happiness Never Knocks   Chapter 2

...Siena stepped out of the car with an air of confidence and approached Kimberly with a smirk playing on her lips. "Sorry, I snagged your spot by mistake. You don't mind, do you?"Before Kimberly could respond, Daniel interjected, "This spot is not anyone's property. If you want it, no one's got
