Julien stood at the mouth of the corridor, blocking her path with smooth, deliberate grace. In his hands, two flutes of vintage champagne bubbled softly, catching the golden light from the distant ballroom. His eyes held that familiar, practiced warmth—the kind he wore like an expensive suit when he wanted something from the world.
Vivian didn't flinch. She felt the cold steel of her father’s legacy settling into her bones, locking her emotions behind a wall of pure ice.
"Hiding?" She let out a small, quiet laugh, allowing her posture to soften just enough to look delicate, fragile, and utterly harmless. "Not at all, darling. The air inside was getting heavy, and my head started throbbing. I was just heading to the powder room to fix my makeup before our anniversary toast."
Julien searched her face for a fraction of a second, his dark gaze lingering on the slight flush near her cheekbones. When he found no challenge in her eyes, his posture relaxed. The predator in him was satisfied that his prey was still safely in her cage.
"You look beautiful, Vivian," he said softly, stepping closer to hand her one of the glasses. His fingers brushed against hers—cold, indifferent contact. "Don't be too long. Senator Vance and the regional board are waiting at the main table. We need to present a united front tonight."
Senator Vance. He was even using her father's political connections to grease the wheels of his own ambitions.
"I'll be two minutes," she replied, offering him a sweet, obedient smile that didn't reach her eyes.
She turned away, her ice-blue silk gown trailing softly against the marble floor as she walked past him toward the heavy oak doors at the end of the hall. She could feel his eyes on her back until she pushed open the door marked VIP Suite Restroom and let it click shut behind her.
The moment the heavy door sealed, the muffled jazz from the ballroom died away into complete silence.
Vivian leaned her back against the cool mahogany door frame, letting out a long, ragged breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Her hands trembled violently as she set the untouched champagne glass on the marble vanity counter.
She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror, gripping the edge of the polished quartz sink until her knuckles turned white.
In the reflection, she hardly recognized herself. The girl staring back was pale, her dark eyes wide and haunted by grief, her crimson lipstick slightly blurred at the corner. For three years, she had buried her instincts, pretending that being a good wife meant being silent, submissive, and blind. She had handed the keys to her parents' kingdom to a man who looked at her family’s blood, sweat, and legacy as nothing more than liquidation capital.
Never again.
Vivian grabbed a damp silk towel, carefully wiping away the tear tracks, then pulled her lipstick from her clutch. With a steady hand, she recapped her lips in a bold, blood-crimson shade. She squared her shoulders, tilted her chin up, and watched her mask harden into something impenetrable.
She wasn't a victim trapped in a bad marriage anymore. She was an insider waiting to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, the heavy brass lock on the outer door clicked.
Vivian turned around, her brows knitting together in confusion. "The room is occupied—"
The word died in her throat.
The heavy door swung open, and three broad, imposing figures stepped into the private suite. Before Vivian could even register their presence, the door closed behind them, and the lock turned with a sharp, heavy snap.
The air in the room instantly shifted, turning thick, electric, and suffocatingly tight.
Vivian’s breath caught in her chest as the three men stepped into the soft amber light of the powder room. They wore tailored black tuxedos that accentuated their broad shoulders and towering frames. They moved with a predatory, synchronized authority that commanded every inch of space in the room.
The Blackwood brothers.
Standing in the center was Ethan Blackwood, the eldest and the undisputed CEO of Blackwood Global—Julien Thorne’s most formidable corporate enemy. His icy blue eyes were sharp enough to cut glass, his dark hair slicked back, his expression entirely unreadable.
To his left stood Lucian, the second brother—unpredictable, razor-sharp, and wearing a dangerous, lazy smirk that held no genuine warmth.
And on the right was Alexander, the youngest—a tech prodigy with dark, stormy eyes and a jawline so rigid it looked carved from granite.
They were the titans of the financial world, men who bought and sold empires before lunch. But to Vivian, they were something far more dangerous: men with whom she shared a tangled, heavy past she had tried desperately to forget. Three years ago, before she married Julien, she had vanished from their lives without a single word of explanation.
And now, they were cornering her in a private room while her husband celebrated upstairs.
"Well, well," Lucian spoke first, his voice a low, gravelly purr that echoed off the marble walls. He stepped up beside her, leaning his tall frame casually against the vanity counter, his thigh pressing directly against her hip, pinning her against the quartz sink. "Look what slipped away from the golden ballroom. The sweet, dutiful Mrs. Thorne."
Vivian’s pulse hammered against her throat, but she forced herself not to shrink away. "This is the women's VIP suite. You need to leave before I call security."
"Security?" Alexander let out a short, dark laugh, stepping close enough behind her that his chest brushed the bare skin of her upper back. The intense heat radiating off him made her skin prickle. "Julien’s security team works on Blackwood servers, little bird. They won't step through that door unless Ethan tells them to."
Vivian looked directly at Ethan, who stepped forward with slow, deliberate dominance. He stopped inches from her, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over her face.
"Three years, Vivian," Ethan said, his deep, resonant voice vibrating through the tight space between them. "You ignored our calls, erased your records, and walked into the bed of an opportunistic thief who treats your father's name like a stepping stone. Is this the life you abandoned us for?"
"My marriage is none of your business, Ethan," Vivian whispered, her heart thrashing wildly as the suffocating closeness of all three men ignited an intoxicating, dangerous heat in her veins.
"Isn't it?" Lucian murmured, sliding his hand up her waist, his long fingers trailing suggestively over the silk covering her ribs until he cupped the curve of her hip, pulling her a fraction closer to his body. Vivian let out a soft, involuntary gasp, her spine stiffening. "We watched him at the head table tonight. We saw how his hands lingered on you—impatient, careless, fake. Tell me, Vivian... does he touch you like this? Does he make your breath catch when he lays a hand on your skin, or does he only pretend when the cameras are watching?"
"Stop it," Vivian choked out, her blood running hot as ancient, forbidden memories flared to life.
"You're shivering, little runner," Alexander purred against her ear, his hand sliding slowly up her spine, his palm resting right between her shoulder blades, holding her pinned flush between him and Ethan. "Your husband thinks he bought you with a ring, but your body still remembers who you belonged to first."
"I am not hiding, and I don't belong to anyone!" Vivian snapped, her dark eyes flashing with sudden, raw fire as she glared up at Ethan. "Let me go!"
Ethan didn't step back. Instead, his icy eyes darkened with an intense, possessive hunger. He reached up, his leather-gloved fingers tilting her chin up firmly, forcing her face up to his. He traced the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip, pressing hard enough to part her lips slightly and smudge the bold crimson shade against her skin.
"Look at you," Ethan murmured, his face dipping down until his lips almost brushed hers, his breath hot and dangerous against her mouth. "Dressed in his diamonds, wearing his ring, while your skin burns under our hands. You play the submissive trophy wife upstairs, but in here, you're drowning in the fire we left inside you."
Vivian’s breath hitched, her throat tight as the forbidden physical charge between them nearly broke her composure. "Ethan..."
"If you want to burn his world down, Vivian," Ethan whispered against her lips, his thumb pressing deeper into her jaw, "you're going to need a much bigger fire than a quiet tear in a marble bathroom."
Before she could pull back, heavy, rushed footsteps echoed from the tiled hallway outside the door.
A sharp, impatient knock rattled the brass lock, followed by Julien’s stern voice echoing from the other side.
"Vivian? Are you in there? The press toast is starting in one minute. Open the door!"
