[Ivy]

I return to my room to grab my phone when I pause right outside Hunter’s office.

He seems to be talking to someone and probably forgot that the door needs fixing. Unless we lock it from the inside, it keeps peeling itself open.

“My team and I tried to contact you after the recent scans of Mrs. Morgan, but you didn’t seem to respond.”

That voice… doesn’t it belong to the eye specialist Hunter called from abroad for a second opinion?

What is he doing here?

“Yes,” Hunter says, sounding serious. “I have been busy. So, what’s the verdict?”

“Well,” Dr. Keith says, “that’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Actually, my team and I have found a way to reverse the effects of the burns on Ivy’s retinas. It took us a while, but we did it.”

I gasp, my feet frozen to the spot.

“Ivy… can be healed?”

“It won’t be easy,” Dr. Keith continues. “The procedure is invasive, and it will take several months for her to recover fully. But yes, we believe there’s a strong chance her vision could be restored.”

The hope that surges through my chest is so intense it almost chokes me.

“I see,” Hunter says, his voice tight. “Well, thank you for letting me know. I will let you know if I decide to proceed.”

Dr. Keith must have sensed the same weirdness in his lack of excitement, because he doesn’t miss a beat before speaking again.

“Mr. Morgan, may I ask what’s making you hesitate?”

Hunter’s response is cold, clipped, and almost instant, as if he doesn’t even need to think.

“I’m not sure this is the right time.”

My knees weaken, and I reach out to steady myself against the wall.

Not the right time? What does he even mean?

“I thought this was what you wanted,” Dr Keith says, a hint of confusion creeping into his tone.

“It was,” Hunter replies. “But things have changed.” he exhales, “Her condition, her dependence—it keeps things stable. I don’t want to risk… disrupting that.”

I can barely breathe, barely think.

Hunter—the man who promised me the world, who swore to stay by my side no matter what—is hesitating. He has a chance to give me back my sight, and he’s thinking about saying no?

I press my hand against my mouth to stop the sound from escaping.

Seven years.

Seven years of darkness.

And this… this is what it meant to him?

“It’s a life-changing opportunity, Mr. Morgan,” Dr. Keith says. “You might want to reconsider.”

“I will,” Hunter replies coldly. “Thank you for your time.”

I hear the rustling of papers, the sound of a chair being pushed back.

I bolt before he can open the door, before he can see me standing there, my world crumbling around me once again.

But as I hurry to my room, a single thought repeats in my mind like a cruel mantra.

Hunter doesn’t want me to see. He wants to keep me in the dark—literally.

Because if I could see, I would see everything.

Even his infidelity.

And that's the last thing he wants.

--

In the garden, I hear Finn's footsteps behind me before he even announces his presence.

I turn around just in time to feel him standing right in front of me.

Before he can say anything, I beat him to it.

"You knew, didn't you?"

“What do you mean?”

“Hunter cheated on me behind my back.”

I hear him swallow. Then sigh.

I’ve just always been suspicious of him. Have you found anything recently?

I took a moment to calm down and said, “It’s just suspicion, but I think it’s very likely that he has another woman.”

He sighs again, this time a little more frustrated. "It's not like I didn't try," I imagine him throwing his arms up. "But you... you were such a fool in love. No matter how many times I tried to warn you, you just didn't want to listen. Don't you remember how many times we fought over me not liking Hunter? You even accused me of having ulterior motives, for God's sake."

He's right. I did do all those things.I did accuse him of being jealous—though, if I was honest with myself, I couldn’t quite shake the feeling that maybe Finn stayed so close not just out of friendship, but because he might have felt something more for me.

Sadly, I couldn't return his feelings.

Maybe that's why I ignored him so I wouldn't hurt him. I made it clear, in the best way I could, that nothing could ever happen between us.

But even after all that, Finn stayed by my side like a rock.

He took over his father's job and became my personal driver. He said he was doing it for the money—but I knew. I knew it was his way of silently protecting me.

I take a deep breath and sink back down onto the nearby bench. Despite being mad, he helps me find my way.

"Fine. I was wrong," I mumble. "I thought he really wanted to try for a baby with me..."

"Well, fuck him," he grunts. "Now that you know... what's next? What are you going to do?"

"Well, of course, I'm going to—"

Before I can finish, I sense someone else's presence.

Finn must notice it too, because he quickly stands up.

"Ivy!" A familiar girly voice floats toward me. "I've been looking for you everywhere."

"It's—" Finn starts to say.

"Dahlia," we say at the same time. "I know."

Dahlia's arms wrap around me, her sweet, candy-like fragrance hitting me strongly.

"God, I've missed you so much."

I hug her back. "I missed you too. What are you doing here? Did Hunter finally give you a day off?"

Dahlia works as one of Hunter's assistants. She manages his travel details.

"I wish," she says, sounding like she's pouting. "That bastard doesn't know how to be human at work, I swear."

I laugh despite myself. "Then what brought you all the way here? The Morgan residence isn't exactly on the route to the office."

"It's not, of course." She helps me back to the bench, sitting suffocatingly close. "But your birthday's in a few days, and your hopelessly lovesick husband wants you looking your absolute best. He even handed me his exclusive black card." She gasps dramatically. "Do you have any idea how powerful that made me feel? I've never felt this rich in my life."

I smile. "Well then, feel free to buy something for yourself too. I know you've been eyeing that Versace bag for a long time."

"Oh my God, can I really?" she sounds thrilled, before her tone suddenly dips. "Nah. Your husband would kill me. He already pays me three times what he pays the other assistants—just because we're school-time friends."

He does? Why didn't I hear about this before?

But I don't say anything. It doesn't matter anyway. "He sure is generous when it comes to me."

"I know, right?" she says almost dreamily. "Too bad he's taken. Honestly, if you weren't my friend, I would have seduced him a long time ago."

The irony makes me laugh—and for a brief moment, I wonder if she's the one he's cheating on me with.

"Maybe it's not too late."

"What?" she asks, clearly confused.

I shake my head. "Nothing. So—shopping, you say? Want to leave now, or wait for some snacks first?"

"No time to waste." She helps me stand, looping her arm through mine. "Let's hit the mall first. I can't wait to see you try on all those dazzling gowns. Your beauty always leaves me breathless."

Before I head inside to change, I look over my shoulder. "Let's talk when I'm back."

[Ivy]The silence in the car is a living, breathing thing.Thankfully, the very annoying and very controlling man next to me doesn’t say a word.Because honestly, if he did, I would have given him a piece of my mind, too.I’m not even sure why I got into his car—in Elijah’s car—in the first place. I had every reason to walk right past him, considering his so-called son just gave me the worst headache of my life.I mean, how could someone be so stupid? How could Hunter even come up with a solution so absurd? Where is his self-awareness? Where is his damn logic? In the gutter?I roll my eyes, staring hard at the view outside, though it has no impact on my furious brain.I don’t know how long I just sit there—speechless, angry, and completely out of my mind. But when the car finally stops, it’s only then that I blink and really look outside to see where we are.To say I’m pissed to find myself back at the mansion Hunter and I shared for the last five years would be an understatement.I w

“Dammit!” Hunter grunted, finally letting his frustration show on his face.God knows how long he had been holding back. But if he had snapped at her even once during their conversation, there was no doubt in his mind that Ivy would have stormed out right away.He should have seen it coming, though. It had been a long shot from the very beginning. He knew Ivy would never accept the baby. Hell, she didn’t even want him anymore. And yet, he had hoped.Hoped that maybe, just maybe, she would see how much he was trying to fix things, how much he wanted to make it up to her. He had even been ready to give her a child. His child. But now, as he stood there alone, he realized just how foolish that hope had been.He ran a hand through his hair, pulling at the strands in frustration. What was he s

I look at him for a long moment, feeling nothing but pity. How could I have ever loved this man? How could I have been so blind to his flaws?Even after everything that has happened between us, he still has the audacity to talk like that. Like nothing ever happened. Like everything he did was somehow so excusable that a single apology would be enough to fix it all.I shake my head, looking at the man I once loved more than myself.“There’s nothing to fix, Hunter,” I say directly, holding nothing back. “We’re done. We’ve been done for a while now, and you know that.”Ever since the day you decided to cheat on me.He shakes his head frantically, reaching for my hand and surprising me with his tight grip. “No, we’re not. How can you even say that, Ivy? You used to love me so much. You always forgave me, no matter what. Why can’t you just… just give me another chance?”I pull my hand away, disgusted by the touch. “Because I don’t want to forgive you, isn’t that enough?”His face falls, an

[Ivy]“This is too much, Ivy. I can’t… I can’t accept all of this,” Janice says, looking at the dozens of shopping bags in front of her. She turns to me, shaking her head frantically. “I know you care about me, and I’m grateful to have someone like you as my friend, but this is really too much. You have to understand that I can’t accept it.”“Good lord, you’re overthinking again!” I groan, rolling my eyes and ignoring her childish protest. I turn to the staff member instead, who has been assisting us for the past two hours. “Here’s my card. Swipe it once we’re done. Don’t hold back.”The attendant accepts the card with a gentle smile. “Yes, ma’am. Would you like to see something else? Perhaps our new party collection? We have just received the latest designs from Rosita Rose.”Rosita Rose? Isn’t she the famous designer who’s been making waves in the fashion industry lately? I’ve read a few articles about her, but I’ve never actually seen her work up close. I wonder how it would look o

Hearing Janice say that warms my heart.I never had a sister, but if I did, I would genuinely want someone like her. She’s the epitome of kindness, love, and compassion. And for obvious reasons, that makes me want to avenge her.Rebecca and that fraud, Ivory Hunt, not only destroyed her, her career, and her entire future, but they also made the huge mistake of stealing what’s mine. And now they possibly cannot blame anyone but themselves for what’s coming to them, can they?—[Elijah]“What the hell is wrong with you?” Hunter comes storming into my office, looking more furious than I expected. Then again, I’m so used to being so disappointed in him that at this point, his tantrums hardly affect me anymore.“You went to see Ivy last night and didn’t even bother to tell me?” he spits out. “Why? What do you get by doing this? Do you get some sick pleasure out of butting in between my wife and me? Or do you think you can do just about anything because no one is here to question you?”I le

During breakfast, everyone keeps staring at the scarf wrapped tightly around my neck.Grandpa raises an eyebrow, and Martha gives me a curious look, but no one asks any questions. And I’m grateful for that. The last thing I want to explain is how I got a hickey the size of a fucking apple on my neck, especially when the culprit is someone I shouldn’t even be thinking about that way.Janice, on the other hand, seems to be in a much better mood this morning. She’s laughing and chatting like her old self, and it’s a relief to see her like this after everything she’s been through. After breakfast, she follows me back to my room, her curiosity getting the better of her.“So,” she starts, closing the door behind her, “you wanna tell me what’s going on with you and that neck of yours? Because I don’t think it’s just a fashion statement.”I sigh, knowing I can’t keep this from her forever. “I… it’s nothing. Just a mistake.”She raises an eyebrow, looking even more curious. “A mistake, huh?” T
