Chapter 3

Author: Rainless Day
Dad slammed his cutlery on the dining table and yelled, "Ash Nash! How can you be so spoiled and unreasonable?"

He rose to his feet, his face livid. "Do you not know how bad Eli's health is? Do you not know that Eli…"

He trailed off, unable to finish what he intended to say.

I had no idea what they were talking about back then. I only knew that Eli always had a pale complexion, that he would occasionally cough, and that Mom and Dad had always looked at him with those sorrowful eyes of theirs. I didn't understand what it all meant back then.

"Why does everything belong to Eli?" I jumped off my chair and pointed at Eli, who was sitting across from me, sobbing while yelling, "You should just drop dead and give me back what's mine!"

Eli tried to speak, but nothing came out.

Mom stood up abruptly and slapped me hard across the face.

That was the very first time I had been struck so hard.

Eli tried to throw himself forward to shield me, but Mom held him back with a firm grip, saying, "He needs to learn his lesson! He needs to understand what things he can and cannot say!"

I overheard Mom and Dad talking in the kitchen the following day after the incident.

Mom said through her tears, "He only has nine years left…"

"I know," Dad said hoarsely."

"J-Just nine years left…"

It was only then that I understood that Eli was really going to die. It turned out that the numbers hovering above his head, unseen by anyone else, were the countdown to his lifespan.

In the living room, Mom's and Dad's eyes were bloodshot as they carefully escorted Eli back to his bedroom.

I looked on, suddenly feeling a sharp pang of sorrow.

"H-How about we let Ash out?" Dad asked softly.

Mom remained silent for a long time before replying, "He should bear it a bit longer."

She sounded extremely weary, as if she had used up all her energy. "He should stay in there until Eli gets to celebrate his birthday properly—for the very last time."

I watched as Mom raised her hand to wipe away her tears.

She sounded like she was talking herself into it, saying, "I'm sure Ash will understand our intentions. We'll make it up to him once Eli is no longer around…"

Dad remained silent. He just walked into the kitchen, took a small piece of bread from the cabinet, and walked toward the storage room. He then whispered toward the door, "I've brought you some bread, Ash. You should have something to eat so you don't starve yourself."

I drifted in front of him and crouched down to look at him. I noticed that his eyes were bloodshot, the wrinkles around them significantly deeper than last year, and the hair at his temples had already turned white. He was only 40 years old this year, but he looked like he was 50 years old.

"I'm right here. I'm already dead, Dad. Why don't you head in there and check on me, Dad?"

"Ash?" Dad called out again.

I reached out to touch his face, but my hand passed right through his body.

"That kid is still throwing a tantrum." Dad sighed and stood up in disappointment. He then pushed the bread a bit further into the crack of the door and said, "You should just stay put and stop acting out. I'll definitely make it up to you once Eli is no longer around…"

I didn't wait for him to discover me in the storage room. I looked at his retreating figure and said softly, "It won't be necessary, Dad. You don't need to make it up to me anymore."

I silently told myself that they would never have the chance to do that anymore.

Then, after Dad walked away, the hallway returned to complete silence again.

It was then that a faint noise came from the living room. Mom walked out of Eli's bedroom, gently closed the door, and stood in the hallway in a daze.

She stared at the storage room door, her lips pressed tightly together as if she were wrestling with herself. She eventually walked over and crouched down where Dad had just been.

She then said softly, "I hope you won't blame me for this, Ash. I know you've suffered a lot all these years."

Grandma sighed and reached out to stroke my head, but she stopped halfway and withdrew her hand. She then said softly, "I know, Ash. I know everything."She turned around, took an apple out of the cabinet, rinsed it, and put it in front of the urn. She then spoke as though she were really talking to me, saying, "You should try this. I don't have much here, but the apple is really sweet. Give it a taste, Ash."I looked at the bright red apple and felt a sharp pang in my heart. I had never once eaten an entire apple while I was still alive. Whenever there was an apple at home, it was always sliced in half, with the bigger piece being given to Eli and the smaller piece to me. Eli would always secretly give me a bit more of his share, claiming he wasn't hungry and that he didn't like apples.Yet, now that I was dead, Grandma actually gave me an entire apple. I floated across and crouched down before the apple. I couldn't actually eat it, but I could still catch the whiff of its crisp,

Grandma sneered. "You want to make it up to him? Ash is already dead, Linda. What could you possibly give him now? I'm telling you right now—I'm not leaving Ash's ashes with you since none of you deserve them."Dad dropped to his knees, too. "Please let us keep Ash, Mom! We truly know our mistake now, so from now on, we'll—" Grandma cut him off, her voice trembling while asking, "What do you plan to do from now on? It's already too late for that. You both killed Ash. You'll be in debt to Ash for the rest of your lives, Frank and Linda—something that can never be repaid."She tightened her grip on the urn and walked away after saying that."Mom!""Please don't go, Mom!"Mom and Dad threw themselves forward to stop her, but Grandma pushed them aside with a single movement."Get out of the way! You'd better not touch Ash! You're not worthy of him!" Grandma shrieked, her eyes bloodshot. She walked out of the yard and into the drizzling rain, clutching the urn tightly. She walked

Grandma sidestepped to avoid Mom. She then glared coldly at her and said, "Ash is already dead. You were the one who locked him up for the night. How long are you going to live in denial, Linda?"Mom slumped to the floor, covering her face and sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry, Ash. Please come back to me..."Dad kneeled on the floor and repeatedly struck his forehead against the ground with a heavy, rhythmic thumping sound."Please don't do this, Dad…" Eli cried, reaching out to pull him back, only to be violently pushed aside by Dad."It's all my fault! It's entirely my fault!"Grandma took in the family and the sheer absurdity of the scene before shutting her eyes. She regained her composure once she opened her eyes. She then carried me to the door and said, "I'm going to buy Ash's burial clothes.""Mom!" Dad suddenly ran over and clung to Grandma's leg. "Please don't take him away! Please don't leave with Ash!"Grandma looked down at Da

Grandma said, "Lay Ash down, Frank."Dad's hands trembled, but he still held onto me tightly. He then choked out, "Ash isn't dead, Mom. He's just—"Grandma cut him off, saying, "He's already dead, Frank. He died from a fever after you locked him up in the storage room the entire night."Dad seemed to be struck to the core by Grandma's remarks. He started trembling uncontrollably as he shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I-It's not like that. I only wanted him to quiet down... I just didn't want him disturbing Eli… I didn't know he was running a fever… I really had no idea…"Grandma was utterly disappointed. "You knew everything, Frank. Ash cried out, saying that his head hurt and that he had a fever. You heard it, and Linda heard it, too. You two just chose not to believe him."Mom bolted out of the room and collapsed at Grandma's feet. "It's all my fault!"She wailed, grabbing onto Grandma's pant legs. "You can hit me or even yell at me! I'm the one who killed Ash! I

Dad's hand remained frozen in place for a very long time. He then slumped to the floor, bawling like a child. He cried as he spoke, his voice hoarse and nearly impossible to make out. "H-He's dead… Ash is actually dead… Ash is dead…"Eli was still standing in the doorway. His hand on the doorframe was shaking, while his whole body was trembling. He looked at Mom and Dad crying inside the storage room, then at the small, lifeless body in the corner. He then murmured, "Ash…"He suddenly blacked out and collapsed to the floor."Eli!" Mom shrieked, throwing herself forward and catching him right before he collapsed onto the floor. In that instant, chaos erupted in the living room.…It was already noon when Eli regained consciousness.Mom sat on the side of the bed, her eyes swollen and bloodshot from all the crying. She held his hand and said repeatedly, "You're alright now, Eli. It's all over now. It's good that you're alright, Eli…"Eli opened his eyes and stared at the ceilin

"What's the matter?" Mom didn't understand what was happening. He released Eli's hand and took two steps forward, trying to step across the threshold.Dad suddenly reached out an arm to stop her. He spoke in a barely audible whisper, as though terrified of waking or disturbing something, "Hold on."He stood with his back to the light, so I couldn't make out his expression, though I could see that his shoulders were trembling slightly. He stood in the doorway, staring without moving at the small body curled up in the corner.Eli looked out from behind Mom, his face looking even paler in the morning light. He called out softly, his voice filled with a tentative hope, "Ash? Do you hear me, Ash? I'm fine now—I'm not going to die."In the corner, my body remained completely still—not even the rise and fall of breathing could be seen.Mom's smile instantly stiffened. She took another step forward, and this time, Dad didn't stop her. She stepped over the threshold, came up to me, and kne
