Chapter 5

Author: Rainless Day
Grandma's voice rose, tears welling up in her eyes. "What about Ash, then? Hasn't Ash had it tough too? What has he ever received growing up? He merely got Eli's hand-me-downs and leftovers—even your love, the vast majority of it goes to Eli!"

"Mom, I…" Mom tried to defend herself, but her voice was weak and carried no confidence.

"They're both good children! What have you done as their parents? Do you not feel indebted to Ash? Does he not deserve to be loved at all?" Grandma asked.

Mom sank weakly into the chair and covered her face, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably.

Grandma said hoarsely, "How can you not allow the two brothers to see each other one last time? Eli is leaving tomorrow. Ash is his only brother, the one he's protected since childhood! How can you let Eli go just like that? Do you want him to leave the world with regrets?"

"I-I'm not doing that…" Mom sobbed behind her hands, her voice cracking. "I just wanted Eli's last day to be a happy one. I didn't want Ash to upset him…"

It was already late at night, and Eli's bedroom door was shut tight.

Grandma finally spoke up, her voice raspy, "Go get some sleep. We still have to be up early tomorrow…"

Mom stirred as if she wanted to say something, but ultimately, she just shook her head. "I can't fall asleep."

Dad remained where he was as well.

Grandma sighed and didn't push any further. She stood up, walked to the storage room, squatted down by the door, and said quietly through the crack, "I'm right here with you, so you have nothing to be afraid of, Ash."

I couldn't help but burst into tears again.

Thus, as time ticked away, the candle burned down to nothing, plunging the living room into darkness. Outside the window, the sky gradually paled, shifting from dark blue to slate gray and finally to the pale white of dawn.

That first ray of morning sun broke through the glass window, hitting the worn floorboards and lighting up the dust motes dancing in the air.

Grandma got up and walked over to Eli's bedroom door. She raised her hand to knock but paused halfway. She hesitated for a while before she simply whispered, "It's time to get up, Eli."

It was then that a quiet rustling came from the room, and then the door opened. Eli smiled gently and said, "Good morning, Mom, Dad, and Grandma."

Mom suddenly stood up and ran to embrace him, holding him very tightly. Dad walked over too, his hand shaking as he gently patted Eli's head.

"Eli…" Mom choked out, her voice cracking.

Eli gently patted Mom's back and said softly, "I'm alright now, Mom—I really am."

Grandma stood nearby, watching silently. She watched them for a long moment before something suddenly struck her, and she spun around toward the storage room. She then yelled out in a voice that rang out distinctly in the morning stillness, "Hurry up and let Ash out!"

Mom and Dad suddenly remembered that I was still locked in the storage room. They smiled through their tears and said repeatedly, "That's right! Get Ash out of there! He's still in the storage room! Eli is still alive! He needs to know this wonderful news!"

Mom pulled Eli along while Dad led the way. They ran toward the storage room, their faces brimming with joy.

Yet, when they reached the door and Dad pushed it open, his expression suddenly shifted drastically. He abruptly pulled his hand back, muttering, "It can't be! No way!"

Grandma sighed and reached out to stroke my head, but she stopped halfway and withdrew her hand. She then said softly, "I know, Ash. I know everything."She turned around, took an apple out of the cabinet, rinsed it, and put it in front of the urn. She then spoke as though she were really talking to me, saying, "You should try this. I don't have much here, but the apple is really sweet. Give it a taste, Ash."I looked at the bright red apple and felt a sharp pang in my heart. I had never once eaten an entire apple while I was still alive. Whenever there was an apple at home, it was always sliced in half, with the bigger piece being given to Eli and the smaller piece to me. Eli would always secretly give me a bit more of his share, claiming he wasn't hungry and that he didn't like apples.Yet, now that I was dead, Grandma actually gave me an entire apple. I floated across and crouched down before the apple. I couldn't actually eat it, but I could still catch the whiff of its crisp,

Grandma sneered. "You want to make it up to him? Ash is already dead, Linda. What could you possibly give him now? I'm telling you right now—I'm not leaving Ash's ashes with you since none of you deserve them."Dad dropped to his knees, too. "Please let us keep Ash, Mom! We truly know our mistake now, so from now on, we'll—" Grandma cut him off, her voice trembling while asking, "What do you plan to do from now on? It's already too late for that. You both killed Ash. You'll be in debt to Ash for the rest of your lives, Frank and Linda—something that can never be repaid."She tightened her grip on the urn and walked away after saying that."Mom!""Please don't go, Mom!"Mom and Dad threw themselves forward to stop her, but Grandma pushed them aside with a single movement."Get out of the way! You'd better not touch Ash! You're not worthy of him!" Grandma shrieked, her eyes bloodshot. She walked out of the yard and into the drizzling rain, clutching the urn tightly. She walked

Grandma sidestepped to avoid Mom. She then glared coldly at her and said, "Ash is already dead. You were the one who locked him up for the night. How long are you going to live in denial, Linda?"Mom slumped to the floor, covering her face and sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry, Ash. Please come back to me..."Dad kneeled on the floor and repeatedly struck his forehead against the ground with a heavy, rhythmic thumping sound."Please don't do this, Dad…" Eli cried, reaching out to pull him back, only to be violently pushed aside by Dad."It's all my fault! It's entirely my fault!"Grandma took in the family and the sheer absurdity of the scene before shutting her eyes. She regained her composure once she opened her eyes. She then carried me to the door and said, "I'm going to buy Ash's burial clothes.""Mom!" Dad suddenly ran over and clung to Grandma's leg. "Please don't take him away! Please don't leave with Ash!"Grandma looked down at Da

Grandma said, "Lay Ash down, Frank."Dad's hands trembled, but he still held onto me tightly. He then choked out, "Ash isn't dead, Mom. He's just—"Grandma cut him off, saying, "He's already dead, Frank. He died from a fever after you locked him up in the storage room the entire night."Dad seemed to be struck to the core by Grandma's remarks. He started trembling uncontrollably as he shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I-It's not like that. I only wanted him to quiet down... I just didn't want him disturbing Eli… I didn't know he was running a fever… I really had no idea…"Grandma was utterly disappointed. "You knew everything, Frank. Ash cried out, saying that his head hurt and that he had a fever. You heard it, and Linda heard it, too. You two just chose not to believe him."Mom bolted out of the room and collapsed at Grandma's feet. "It's all my fault!"She wailed, grabbing onto Grandma's pant legs. "You can hit me or even yell at me! I'm the one who killed Ash! I

Dad's hand remained frozen in place for a very long time. He then slumped to the floor, bawling like a child. He cried as he spoke, his voice hoarse and nearly impossible to make out. "H-He's dead… Ash is actually dead… Ash is dead…"Eli was still standing in the doorway. His hand on the doorframe was shaking, while his whole body was trembling. He looked at Mom and Dad crying inside the storage room, then at the small, lifeless body in the corner. He then murmured, "Ash…"He suddenly blacked out and collapsed to the floor."Eli!" Mom shrieked, throwing herself forward and catching him right before he collapsed onto the floor. In that instant, chaos erupted in the living room.…It was already noon when Eli regained consciousness.Mom sat on the side of the bed, her eyes swollen and bloodshot from all the crying. She held his hand and said repeatedly, "You're alright now, Eli. It's all over now. It's good that you're alright, Eli…"Eli opened his eyes and stared at the ceilin

"What's the matter?" Mom didn't understand what was happening. He released Eli's hand and took two steps forward, trying to step across the threshold.Dad suddenly reached out an arm to stop her. He spoke in a barely audible whisper, as though terrified of waking or disturbing something, "Hold on."He stood with his back to the light, so I couldn't make out his expression, though I could see that his shoulders were trembling slightly. He stood in the doorway, staring without moving at the small body curled up in the corner.Eli looked out from behind Mom, his face looking even paler in the morning light. He called out softly, his voice filled with a tentative hope, "Ash? Do you hear me, Ash? I'm fine now—I'm not going to die."In the corner, my body remained completely still—not even the rise and fall of breathing could be seen.Mom's smile instantly stiffened. She took another step forward, and this time, Dad didn't stop her. She stepped over the threshold, came up to me, and kne
