Chapter 4

Author: Cutie Kitty
I called a rideshare and prepared to head home. Wendy leaned over and glanced at the address I had entered. The second she saw it, her expression darkened.

"You're going there?" she snapped. "You and Jeff are divorced. That stopped being your home. You need to pack your things and get out. Now."

Standing beside her, Jeff smiled. "She's right. Why should an outsider stay at my place? Honey, you should move in instead."

He was kicking me out to make room for Wendy. No normal person could accept something like that. The old me certainly could not have.

However, I simply nodded. "Okay. I'll move out."

On the ride home, I booked a hotel room. The moment I got back, I began carefully packing my belongings. By this point, everything had spiraled beyond Jeff's control. For once, he softened his attitude.

Pretending that more of his memories were returning, he picked up one of our wedding photos and asked, "Elaine, when did we take this photo?"

Without even looking up, I continued stuffing clothes into my suitcase.

"It's fake," I said casually. "I edited it myself."

That answer completely set him off. Jeff snatched my suitcase away and started throwing my clothes out the front door one piece at a time.

"Get out!" he shouted. "Leave right now!"

The door slammed shut with a deafening bang.

I simply shook my head. Without saying a word, I bent down, picked up my clothes from the ground, brushed off the dust, and packed them back into my bag.

Inside the house, I heard Wendy's worried voice. "Jeff, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have insisted on becoming the vice president. Seeing you two get divorced makes me feel terrible. Maybe I should explain everything to Elaine."

Jeff had already calmed down. After comforting her for a moment, he said, "This has nothing to do with you. Elaine's just too petty. She's actually holding a grudge against someone who's sick.

"Forget about her. I'll spend these seven days with you, and then I'll deal with everything afterward. Elaine's easy. All I have to do is crook a finger, and she'll come running back."

By then, I was already stepping into the elevator with my luggage.

He was wrong. This time, it was really over. There was no reconciliation.

The next few days after leaving Jeff were surprisingly enjoyable. The only thing that annoyed me was my former coworkers constantly messaging me.

Today, they must have gotten desperate because one of them called me directly. "Ms. Yates, please come back. The project deadline is almost here."

I was about to refuse when I heard shouting and the sound of people fighting over the phone. A few seconds later, Wendy's angry voice came through the line. "Elaine, you've already been fired. Stop sticking your nose into company business."

One of my coworkers immediately fired back, "Wendy, what are you doing? Do you have any idea how much money the company will lose if this project fails?"

Wendy sounded completely unconcerned. "Why are you panicking? I'm almost finished with the designs. I'll have everything submitted in a few days."

A shocked voice exploded through the phone. "This is ridiculous! Nobody trusts your skill level. Besides, the client specifically requested Ms. Yates as the lead designer. You're deceiving them!

"Where's Mr. Cooper? I need to talk to Mr. Cooper right now!"

Wendy's threatening voice cut in, "Jeff is still recovering. If any of you go running your mouths to him, don't blame me when I fire every single one of you."

The call abruptly ended.

Still, I could already guess how things would play out.

After seeing what had happened to me, nobody at the company dared to challenge Wendy openly. They could only swallow their frustration and endure it.

I shook my head and pushed the matter from my mind. For the first time, I truly let go of the company. Before, I had spent every waking moment working. Now, I finally had time to reconnect with my friends.

Every day was filled with dinners, drinks, laughter, and freedom. Little by little, all my worries faded away.

On the seventh day, I changed into a formal gown and headed to a friend's wedding with a corsage in head. As I walked into the venue, I pulled out my phone and sent her a message:

"You promised you'd never leave me."The words almost made me laugh. Why was Jeff clinging so desperately to my promises when he had never kept his own? When everyone realized they could not change my mind, disappointment spread through the room.I stood up, ready to say my goodbyes. That was when Wendy came charging out of nowhere and punched me. I immediately punched her back. The two of us were seconds away from a full-blown fight before everyone rushed forward to pull us apart. Tears filled Wendy's eyes as she shouted at the top of her lungs, "Elaine, you're a terrible person! Do you even understand what's happening? If this isn't fixed, it won't just cost money. Jeff could end up in prison!"You keep saying you loved him more than anyone, but the moment he needs you most, you're running off to another country. You're shameless!"The irony was unbelievable.Wendy was the one who had caused all of this. What right did she have to accuse me?Seeing how upset she was, several

By the time the wedding was over and I finally had a chance to check my phone, I discovered that news of the company's failed project had already spread throughout the industry.Jeff no longer had the luxury of sitting back and letting other people handle things. On one side, he had to calm the furious client. On the other, he had to deal with angry shareholders demanding answers. For the first time in years, he was the one running around nonstop. During that time, Jeff sent me several messages asking for help. I rejected every single one.Eventually, he lost his temper.[Elaine, I'm giving you a chance to save the company. You should be grateful instead of acting like this.]I immediately blocked his number and blocked him on all other platforms too. After that, I never paid attention to him again.Meanwhile, the situation continued to spiral out of control. The story spread beyond industry circles and into the public eye. For several days in a row, Jeff's company dominated the

Jeff suddenly laughed. The tension seemed to drain from his body as he let out a long sigh of relief. "So, you're not marrying someone else. Then why didn't you just explain that to me?"A moment later, realization dawned on him. "Oh, I get it now. You were trying to make me jealous on purpose. Alright, alright. Let's stop fighting. We should deal with the company's crisis first."I handed the corsage to my friend and shook off the hand Jeff had reached out to grab mine with. "I have a wedding to attend. The mess you and Wendy created is your problem to solve."Jeff lifted his chin unhappily and frowned at me. "Is your friend's wedding really more important than the company? Wendy and I have already apologized. How long are you planning to keep this up?"The way he said it was almost impressive. If he had not spent all this time enabling Wendy's behavior, none of that would have happened in the first place.I ignored him and continued chatting with my friend.Seeing that neither

Only today did I finally learn the truth. All of it had been Wendy's fault. Jeff had known the entire time. Not only had he covered for her, but he had also pinned the blame on me and forced me to clean up her mess.Even after doing all that, Jeff still had not noticed that I had changed. After scolding Wendy a little longer, he sighed helplessly. "Forget it. Everyone knows what your skill level is. I wasn't expecting much from you anyway."Then, he turned toward me, his eyes softening. "Elaine, you're the capable one. I'm sure you can fix this. No matter how difficult the project is or how demanding the client gets, you've always been able to handle it."I was wrong before. Wendy really isn't as capable as you. My wonderful wife is still the best."I was about to refuse when Wendy immediately became jealous. "Jeff, I'm not as bad as you're making me sound!"For once, Jeff did not indulge her. Instead, he snapped sharply, "Enough. Look around. This whole disaster happened because

Jeff stood there in stunned silence after being chewed out over the phone."How is that possible?" he muttered. "We've worked with you so many times. Nothing like this has ever happened before."He was about to explain himself when the call abruptly ended. In the past, I had always handled matters like that. Jeff had never involved himself in the day-to-day operations and acted more like a hands-off owner than a manager. This time, moments after bragging about Wendy's abilities, a disaster exploded in front of everyone. His pride would not let him ask me for help. Instead, he turned to Wendy with a frown. "What happened? I thought you said everything was under control."Wendy's expression was just as ugly. She crossed her arms and huffed angrily. "That client is unbelievable. I worked so hard on those designs. How could he talk about me like that? If they don't want the project, then forget it."Jeff's eyelid twitched with frustration. "That project comes with 100 million dollar

[I left the corsage in the car, but I found it. I'll bring it to you right now.]I had barely finished sending the message when a familiar voice reached my ears."Thank you all for coming to celebrate Wendy's and my wedding..."I turned around. There, standing near the entrance, were Jeff and Wendy greeting guests. Wendy was dressed in a white wedding gown, and a giant wedding portrait of the two of them stood on display outside the banquet hall.Wendy spotted me first. Without hesitation, she grabbed Jeff's chin and kissed the corner of his lips. The surrounding guests erupted into happy cheers.Jeff laughed and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into his embrace. Then, he looked up.The moment our eyes met, he froze. A second later, he abruptly straightened up and deliberately put some distance between himself and Wendy. Wendy pursed her lips, clearly unhappy that his attention had shifted to me. She must have thought I had come to stop the wedding.Seeing so many pe
