"You're home. Welcome. How was work today?" Miss Parker said.

"Not well, but it was fine," Esther said, faking a smile.

"Dinner is ready."

"Okay," Esther said.

"I made your favourite for dinner."

A smell drifting from the kitchen drew Esther closer and she said, smiling broadly, "I know what that is! It's pudding with warm vanilla custard!" she said with a smile on her face.

All Miss Parker could think of in her mind was, may the smile on your face never fade. A tear dropped down her face.

"Are you okay, Mom?"

"Yes, I am, dear. Now sit, let me get you your food."

"Okay," Esther said softly, sitting at the dining table, her hands tapping lightly on the table while she waited.

"Now, go ahead. You'll love it."

"Hmm…this tastes so nice," Esther said, licking her lips. "I love it. Thanks, Mom."

"I'm sorry I spoke coldly to you yesterday," Esther said.

"No, it's fine, my dear. I understand. One has to pour out their heart whenever they feel the weight of it. And do not forget who you are — you are stronger than you know, more precious than you realise, and loved far more than words can ever say. Never let anyone or anything make you forget that," Miss Parker said.

"I love you. Thanks, Mom," she said, tears gathering in her eyes.

The room was filled with emotion and for a moment, the whole world seemed to hold its breath.

"Goodnight, Mom…tomorrow is work so I have to wake up early before my grumpy boss fires me on the spot," she said, grinning.

They both laughed and she went to her room, the door closing softly behind her.

"Good morning, Mom," Esther greeted as she walked out of her room to the living room, prepared to leave for work. She looked happier than usual, quietly praying and hoping no one would ruin her day — especially not her grumpy boss.

"Another day to begin with," Esther said as she arrived at work.

"Good morning, Miss Linda," she said, smiling.

"Good morning, Esther," Linda replied, sounding surprised because she had never seen Esther in such a bright mood before. Linda shook her head with a soft smile and walked away.

Esther pressed the button on the wall and the elevator door opened. She stepped in and it opened again on the next floor that led to Smith's office. She walked out, entered Smith's office, and began cleaning — swaying and dancing to a song playing only in her head, lost in her own little world without a care.

The door opened and lo and behold, it was him. Smith Vale. He didn't fume, he didn't get angry or make a move. He simply stood there in a blue tuxedo suit, one hand inside his pocket, leaning against the wall, watching her dance with quiet amusement. A smile crossed his face. Then he made his move — cleared his throat and walked into his office, pretending he had seen nothing.

Esther noticed immediately.

"Mr. Smith, sorry, Sir…I mean, good morning, Sir," she said, shaking.

"Get out," he said in a soft tone.

She quietly left his office, her heart pounding like a drum at the final seconds of a race she desperately didn't want to lose.

He didn't shout at me? Unlike him. She said to herself.

"Hmm…that's unusual of that grumpy man," she murmured, walking down the hallway.

"Get out!" she said jokingly to herself, mimicking her boss's usual words, and then she smiled.

In the office, Smith couldn't shake off what he had seen earlier from his head.

Still smiling. "I've never seen her smile before, and the way she dances…" he said to himself, then caught himself. "No, man. Come off it," he said. "She's not your class or your status. Be focused. She's just a janitor, nothing more," he said to himself again.

To distract himself, he turned to his laptop and began typing, the sound of the keyboard filling the quiet office.

She was sitting on a wooden chair, waiting for a response from Marcus after the incident of her holding his collar."Listen to me, Marcus...""Maya!" Maya smiled, but this time, there was something different about it.The smile wasn't warm.It was the kind of smile that made Chloe wonder if Maya knew something she didn't.Silence settled between them.Chloe couldn't stop thinking about Maya's last words.Prison isn't the end of the game."What do you mean?" Chloe finally asked, unable to hide the confusion in her voice.Maya glanced around the cell before taking a step closer."Now, listen to me, Chloe," she whispered. "I will help you get out of here."Chloe stared at her for a moment. She wanted to believe her, but prison wasn't a place where people helped each other without a reason."How?""Relax, Chloe," Maya said calmly."I know my ways around here, and I have so many connections here and outside. The sun rose slowly over Vale Mansion, painting the sky in soft gold and amber, quiet and unhurried — as if the world itself had exhaled after a long and heavy night."Thank you," Esther said, holding Smith tightly. "Thank you for saving my life and my mother's."Smith smiled and said, "You're welcome. But first — tell me the truth," he said, looking into her eyes, one brow raised."Tell me you didn't feel anything for me."Esther went a little shy. "I did," she said. "From the very first time I saw you. But you were too grumpy." She smiled. They both laughed and held each other close — the kind of hug that says everything words never could, the kind that says, “I found you and I'm never letting go.”"Forever," they said to each other. The warmth of that moment stayed with them, but there was still one thing left to face. The day was here. Smith and Esther had arrived in the court. Esther felt so anxious, wondering what the verdict would be upon Chloe."Hey," Smith said, "you are lost

"What!" they both said at once, still shocked by what Pears had said."Yes, she's your sister, Chloe," Pears said."How? This can't be, Dad," Chloe said."Esther, I'm sorry. I didn't know until I found you at ValeX Tech the other day. I was surprised by what I saw, so I made my findings," Pears said, trying to get close to Esther, but she stopped him immediately."Stay the hell away from me," she said, crying and angry."You never cared. You left me and my mom to rot on the streets, mocked and looked down upon with disdain — calling me a child of a nobody!" Crying bitterly, she continued, "And you're here telling me you're my father and you think I'll accept you with open arms? Huh?" she said angrily."Tell your miserable daughter to release my mother at once, or I will do something drastic and someone will have to die," Esther said furiously.Smith couldn't do anything. He was still in shock, still trying to calculate everything that was happening. In his mind he kept asking himself,

  • His Janitor   Chapter Ten

Inside the room, the only sound was the quiet rhythm of Smith's breathing. Esther lay with her head resting completely against his bare chest. The heavy wool blanket was tangled somewhere around their waists, her mind entirely quiet for the first time in years. Smith's hand rested in her hair."You're quiet," Smith said. She tilted her head up, resting her chin on his chest so she could look at him."I'm just thinking about my mom," Esther said, looking into his eyes."About that — my men found your mother's phone outside the house. They also went inside to check if anyone was there but found no one. So," he said, exhaling, "they found this — your mom's phone, which was used to track your location." "If my mom isn't at home, then where is she?" She said, sounding disturbed."Smith, she took my mom too," Esther said, crying, pulling the blanket around herself as she got up from the bed."Calm down," Smith said."Who is she?" He asked."It…"Esther was trying to say the name when Smith
