Ronald placed a tablet on the desk in front of Alexander. "Sir, this was posted this morning. It’s going viral."

It was a video from an anonymous group. Everyone on social media was sharing it. The headline was brutal: [Desperate Orphan Assaults Heiress Vivienne Montgomery Over Businessman Alexander Sterling.]

The headline was bad, but the comments were even worse. People were calling Elara a monster.

Alexander’s throat went dry as he watched the video. "Is this true?" he asked his assistant.

"We can pull the security footage to see what really happened, sir," Ronald offered.

Alex shook his head. "No need. Get IT to erase this everywhere. Now. I also need a PR team to fix this."

His heart thudded against his ribs. He remembered the cruel things he had said to Elara at the hotel. He looked at his phone. He had sent her dozens of apology messages since that night, but there was only silence. She hadn't replied to a single one.

"Was she here to see me?" he whispered to himself.

He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. He hated himself. He had only said those mean things to protect her. Vivienne Montgomery was old money and extremely powerful. Her father was one of the richest men in the country. Vivienne was relentless—when she wanted something, she took it.

She had chased Alex since college, and he had rejected her every time. For the last three years, she had made his life a nightmare. She used her father’s power to block his business deals. Alex hadn't cared about the money, but then Vivienne threatened to harm Elara.

That was his breaking point. To keep Elara safe, he had to keep Vivienne close. In exchange, Vivienne used her father’s influence to make him CEO. He had sacrificed his happiness and his reputation to protect the woman he loved.

But looking at the video, he wondered if he had just made things a thousand times worse.

---

When it got dark, Alexander went to Elara’s house. He couldn't wait any longer. He had to apologize in person and explain everything. He knew if Vivienne found out, she would go crazy, but he didn't care. He couldn't live with Elara thinking he was a monster.

He knocked on her door. There was no sound inside. He knocked again, harder this time. Silence.

He turned and knocked on the neighbor's door. A woman opened it.

"Have you seen Elara?" Alex asked, his voice tight.

"She moved out this afternoon," the neighbor said. "A good-looking man came here to help her pack her things. They left together."

"Thank you," Alex muttered.

As he walked away, his fingernails dug into his palms, creating deep half-moons. His blood began to boil. 'Was Elara cheating on me this whole time?' He knew everyone in her life. He knew her friends and her coworkers. But he didn't know a "good-looking man" who would help her move her entire life in a single afternoon.

A hot flame of anger burned in his chest. 'Was this why she was ignoring my messages? Has she already moved on to someone else?'

Alexander felt his whole world shift. He had sacrificed everything—his soul, his happiness, and his pride—just to keep her safe.

'Did she play me this whole time?' he wondered. The thought hurt more than any threat Vivienne had ever made.

Alexander got into his car and sat in the silence. He inhaled deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose. His mind was reeling. Had he ever really known the real Elara? What if she actually had attacked Vivienne?

There was only one way to find out the truth. He grabbed his phone and called Ronald.

"Pull the security footage from the lobby," he barked. "Send it to my tablet right now."

A few minutes later, the file arrived. Alexander hit play. From the specific angle of the camera, it really did look like Elara pushed Vivienne to the ground. He watched the screen, his heart sinking.

But then, he watched until the very end.

He saw a young, good-looking man enter the frame. The man smashed the phones of the people recording and helped Elara up. He looked at the man's hand placement.

"Wait, who is this?" Alexander said to himself. He felt a sharp pang of jealousy in his chest.

He watched the man put his arm around Elara and lead her out of the building. Alexander clutched his chest, feeling like he couldn't breathe.

'Was this the same man the neighbor saw?'

He called Ronald back immediately, his was voice shaking with rage and desperation. Had he lost the love of his life?

"Find out who that man is! Do it now!" Alex shouted. "And find Elara. I don't care what it takes—find her immediately!"

The workday was over. Elara's mind was reeling. She was completely torn. This whole revenge plot seemed so easy on paper. But now that she was actually in it, it was extremely tasking. She walked toward the executive elevator, needing to escape. As she stepped inside and the doors began to close, a hand suddenly thrust between them. The sensors clicked, and the doors slid back open.Elara gasped, completely surprised.Alexander stood there. He was the last person she wanted to see. She was already so confused, and being in a closed space with him wasn't going to help her. He stepped inside, and the doors shut behind him."Lara," he called out softly. She rolled her eyes, turning her back to him. "Have we gotten to the point where we can't even have a simple conversation?" he asked. She shook her head, staring at the floor indicators. "I don't need to talk to you, Mr. Sterling. It's after work hours."Without a word, Alexander reached over and pressed the emergency stop button. The ele

Elara arched a brow. "What threat, Alex? What are you talking about?" Her frustration grew with his silence. "What are you on about? Say something. I'm losing my patience."Alexander pinched the bridge of his nose. He sighed deeply. "Forget I said anything.""I'm not going to forget! You can't just—"She was cut off immediately. Lyra peeked her little head out of the car window. "Mummy, can we go now? Leo says he has a headache."Lyra looked at Alexander with wide, hopeful eyes. "Can our new daddy come?""He's not your—" Elara stopped in her tracks. Lying to her kids was getting harder. Their father was standing right in front of them. She looked at Leo’s pale face and Lyra’s hopeful one. "Okay," she said, throwing her hands up in defeat. Alexander smiled. He cocked his head to the side. "Are you sure?" he asked playfully."Get in before I change my mind!" Elara climbed into the back seat with the kids. She chucked the keys at him. "You’re our chauffeur for the day."He caught them

Alexander's blood was boiling. He smoothed Lyra’s hair. She was shuddering and shaking like a leaf. "Whose fatherless child put a hand on my boy?" Joseph Murano yelled. His voice was loud. You could hear it from inside the office. "Who touched you, Jamie?" Joseph asked his son. Jamie started sobbing hysterically. "It was Leo Vance, Daddy. He threatened me. He pushed me to the ground and yelled at me.""Vance? Who the fuck is that?" Joseph barked. "A vermin with an unrecognizable last name dared to touch my child. Do you know how much I've put into this school? I'm one of your biggest benefactors! I built your annex and science labs!""I know sir, I completely understand. It's unacceptable," Josh pacified him. "I want them expelled immediately. If that's not done by the end of the day, your monthly payments stop immediately. I'll convince the other parents to do same. What's the point of the kick backs if you're going to be useless Milton!"The door swung open. Josh Milton, the dir

Elara pulled her car into the drop-off lane and The Sterling Academy. It was the most prestigious school in the district—safest, most advanced. The irony burned. The only thing that made her feel better was that it was managed by Evelyn, Alexander's mother. "Okay, my little lions," Elara said, turning around to face the backseat.Leo was already adjusting his tiny blazer, looking exactly like a miniature version of Alexander. Lyra, meanwhile, was busy stuffing a drawing into her backpack."Mom, do I have to go? I wanted to finish my painting," Lyra pouted, her big eyes searching Elara's."You can finish it in art class, Lyra," Elara smiled, reaching back to tuck a stray hair behind her daughter's ear. "Think of all the new friends you'll make. And Leo, remember what we talked about?""Protect Lyra, don't talk to strangers, and do my math first," Leo recited with a serious nod.Elara’s heart squeezed. He was so much like Alexander it was terrifying—the same focus, the same protective

Alexander felt like he was about to throw up. He couldn't have Ethan anywhere near his Elara."You know what," he said, his voice strained. "I think I’ll pass. The deal is dead."Everyone in the room mirrored Elara’s expression of pure exasperation. Without another word, Alex turned on his heel and walked out of the conference room.Elara didn't hesitate. She followed him out, her heels clicking aggressively against the floor. "Are you fucking insane?" she asked loudly. The entire executive floor stopped to stare.Alexander didn't answer until he reached his office. He grabbed her by the arm, pulled her inside, and slammed the door shut. He inhaled deeply, trying to steady his racing heart."So let me get this straight," he said, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Alistair is your brother. And Ethan is the man you're currently seeing."Elara was shocked. He knew Ethan? But how? "It's none of your business," she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. He stopped pacing and ran a

"Sister?" Alex asked, his voice cracking as he stood there completely flabbergasted. "I didn't know—" He trailed off, looking between them as the gears finally turned. "Wait, Lara... is he...?"Elara nodded, her expression weary under the weight of the lobby's gaze. "He’s my brother. Alistair Vance.""So," Alex continued, his brain still struggling to catch up, "you guys are...""Siblings," Elara completed the sentence sharply. "Now, can we go home?"Alex’s eyes widened further as a memory clicked into place. "That's why Lyra called him uncle. That means..." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, urgent whisper that ignored the crowd. "That means you found your mum? You found your family?"By now, Elara was fed up with the interrogation. The vulnerability of her past was being picked apart in a room full of strangers. "I think we're ready to leave now," she said, her voice hard."Wait," Alex said, reaching out instinctively. "I—I just—""You have no right to ask me things abo
