Chapter 1

The breaking point

‎Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

‎The burn on her cheek was the only thing she could feel.

‎"You absolute parasite!" Eleanor's voice shook with a venom that matched the force of the slap she had just delivered. She stood breathing heavily, her manicured fingers still trembling with rage. You ruined my son's life, you dragged our family name through the mud, and for what? To end up precisely where you belong in the gutter.

‎Rosalie didn't move. She didn't press her hand to her cheek, nor did she look up to meet Eleanor's cold glare. Instead, she kept her eyes on the sterile hospital tiles, watching a stray drop of rainwater slowly dry against the porcelain.

‎Eleanor's eyes narrowed when Rosalie said nothing. She stepped closer, as if silence was an insult she couldn't let go of. She paced the narrow corridor, the sharp, clicking of her designer heels echoing in the quiet hall. I knew from the moment you came to our home that you Were  trouble. You think you can just walk away from the damage you've caused?

‎    If anything happens to Chloe in that operating room, I will ensure you never see the light of day again!' "Mother, enough." Ethan's voice was low, slicing through his mother's outburst like a blade. He stood a few paces away by the large window at the end of the hall, his figure rigid against the glass. His eyes were fixed on the rain masking the city outside, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. "Enough?" Eleanor scoffed, turning on her son, her chest heaving under her silk blouse.Ethan, look at her! She is a curse on this family. You cannot possibly defend her now. I am not defending anyone, Ethan said, finally turning around. His expression was a mask of cold exhaustion, his jaw tight with a stress he refused to show. "But this is between Rosalie and me. Leave." Eleanor opened her mouth to argue, her eyes widening in disbelief. Ethan, I am your mother.

‎  "I said, leave." His tone increased, heavy and absolute. "We are handling this privately."

‎Eleanor bristled, her face twisting with offense. She snatched her designer handbag from the chair and threw one final, murderous look at Rosalie. "You reap what you sow. Mark my words, justice will find you," she hissed.

‎She stormed down the hallway. The click of her heels faded until the heavy double doors swung shut, leaving nothing but ringing silence behind.

‎Rosalie stared at the floor. "A sudden wave of dizziness hit her. The sterile smell of bleach and antiseptic felt overwhelming, triggering a sharp wave of nausea deep in her stomach. She swallowed hard, pressing her hand against her lower abdomen, praying Ethan wouldn't notice the slight tremor in her frame".

‎She was pregnant a terrifying reality she had only confirmed a few days ago. She hadn't told anyone. She hadn't even fully accepted it herself. Every time the thought surfaced, she pushed it back down because sitting with it meant sitting with the full weight of what it meant raising a child alone, without a name, without a home, without the man who was its father even knowing it existed.

‎As she stared at the floor, the harsh fluorescent lights seemed to fade. In their place, the memories of a night two weeks earlier came back slowly,

‎"Ethan had come home late. She heard the front door before she saw him a heavy, careless push that didn't bother closing quietly. The scent of expensive whiskey reached her before he did. She had been sitting on the edge of the bed in the dark, still dressed, not waiting for him but not quite able to sleep either. That had become her life existing in the space between hoping and giving up.

‎  He appeared in the doorway. His coat was still on, his tie pulled loose, the top button of his shirt undone. He looked like a man who had been holding himself together all night and had finally stopped trying. He didn't say anything. He just looked at her.

‎In the low light of the bedroom, something in his eyes was different. The careful coldness he wore every day like armor had slipped. Whatever was underneath it exhaustion, something unspoken, something he would never say sober was right there on the surface. He crossed the room slowly and sat beside her on the bed, close enough that she could feel the warmth coming off him.

‎Then his hand found her face. Just his fingertips, tracing her jaw so lightly she almost thought she imagined it. She held completely still, afraid that breathing too loud might break whatever this was. His forehead dropped against hers, his eyes closing, and for a long moment they just sat like that two people who had forgotten how to be near each other, remembering.

‎Then he kissed her, it was slow. Careful in a way he never was, like he was trying to say something he didn't have the words for. She felt it move through her the way music does not loud, just deep. Her hands found the collar of his coat and held on. He pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her with a kind of quiet desperation, and she let herself sink into it completely.

‎She hadn't felt chosen in so long. That night, in the dark, with his arms around her and his mouth against her hers, she felt it. She told herself it was real she needed it to be real.

‎She had made herself believe, for once, that something between them was real. And just like that, whatever she had believed that night was gone. He hadn't been seeing her at all; he had just been drunk, reaching for the nearest warmth. The consequence of that night was now quietly growing inside her a secret she would carry entirely alone.

‎' Sign it,' Ethan said, his voice snapping her back to reality in the corridor.

‎ He walked over and pulled a crisp document from his inner coat pocket, sliding it onto the plastic chair beside her. The bold text screamed under the fluorescent lights: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

‎ "We're done, Rosalie," he said, his voice completely hollow.

‎ "Is this really what you want?" she whispered, her voice cracking as she finally looked up into his dark, empty eyes.

‎ Ethan's gaze was firm, like looking into a stone wall. "We both know the only reason we got married was because of my grandfather. He wanted this union, forced my hand, and out of respect for his wishes I agreed. But the moment he fell into that coma we should have ended this. This entire marriage has been a farce. There is no reason to drag it out."

‎ He gestured to the document. "There is a substantial settlement inside. More than generous. It will ensure you live comfortably wherever you choose to go. Take the money and disappear."

‎ A bitter smile touched Rosalie's lips. She looked at the folder but didn't open it. "I don't want your money, Ethan. I never did," she said softly. She stood up. Her posture was straight, shoulders square. She left the papers untouched, turned on her heel, and walked away down the long, empty corridor, her footsteps silent against the floor. Ethan stood frozen, watching her go. His chest tightened for no reason he could explain. A quiet alarm in the back of his mind told him something wasn't right that there was a truth beneath her quiet exit he hadn't seen. But his pride overrode it. She's playing the victim, he thought, his jaw tightening. She left the papers because she wants me to chase her. Driven by something between rage and arrogance, Ethan strode down the corridor and pushed through the exit doors into the pouring rain, fully intending to make her sign. But the storm was relentless. The cold wind whipped his face as he scanned the dark sidewalk.

‎The streetlights blurred in the rain. The pavement was empty. Rosalie had disappeared into the dark.

‎ A mile away, the storm raged harder at the center of the city bridge.

‎Rosalie walked through the rain with no direction in mind, just forward. The rain hit her in sheets, soaking through her coat, her clothes, her hair. It ran down her face and she let it. She didn't flinch at the cold. Didn't pull her jacket tighter. Didn't feel much of anything. The city lights blurred and bled into the wet pavement around her like a painting left out in the rain. To her, everything and everyone, including buildings and cars, seemed very distant, like she was seeing the world through glass.

‎She stopped at the center of the bridge, hands gripping the cold iron railing. Below, the river was dark and wild, churning as it gulped down the rain. The rushing water overtook the space where her thoughts echoed and silenced everything. The life she had tried to build and the name she had carried hearkened back to the door she had wished would one day open for her.

‎  Her free hand moved to her stomach. She held it there, completely still. It was as though all of creation was starting inside her while she stood frozen in a world of dark ending chaos.

‎ She thought of the dark water, and the choice she made. What was it going to mean for that new life inside of her? She thought of all the possibilities she should go back for. Her hand felt the slight warmth of hope while everything else felt cold and hopeless. She thought about the future she was thinking about the pregnancy and the baby. The baby would open its eyes and want the presence of a calm and stable person. She had been a person who had put herself down just so she could try to be enough for someone who didn't care. She was a person who stayed. But she could not do that to herself. She would not build a life that was going to be a shadow for a person who looked at her like she did not exist. The life she was going to build was going to be for her child and was going to be built with honesty. She did not know how and she did not know where she was going to do it. She did know with all her heart it was not going to be built in this place.

‎All of this she thought of everything that it would mean to go back, to answer those calls, to walk into that miserable place of a hospital with nothing left in her. She couldn't. She wouldn't. She threw her phone over the railing, a personal act of closure. Gone. The past was dead. At her back s car engine rumbled and a black vehicle came to a stop along the curb. Headlights illuminated the mist and the passenger side door opened.

‎   Rosalie recognized the car and stepped away from the railing and walked in, with the door shut the driver had yet to begin the journey. He looked at the woman in the rearview, taking in the evidence of the storm on her hair, the injury on her cheek, and the vacancy in her eyes. Rosalie fastened her seatbelt.

‎“How did you know where to find me?”

‎The driver kept his gaze ahead and spoke to the passenger, not looking at her.

‎“The master asked me to keep an eye on you.”

‎Rosalie said nothing. She stared out the window  watching the distant hospital lights disappear with her hand resting on her abdomen, the driver shifted into gear and pulled away from the curb. The car glided across the bridge as darkness surrounded them, and they left Ethan and everything that was broken behind.
