Ethan didn't move. His father's words hung between them.

"Let's see how long your pride can pay your bills."

Richard walked past him and opened the door. "I'm done talking."

Ethan tightened his grip on his keys. "You really mean this."

Richard didn't answer.

...

The drive home felt longer than usual.

The city lights blurred past his window, but he barely noticed them.

His phone buzzed. Daisy.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

At least one thing hadn't gone wrong tonight.

He answered through the car speakers.

"Hey babe"

"Hi." Her voice sounded tired. "How was dinner?"

Ethan let out a breath. "Let's just say it wasn't about business."

"What happened?"

"My parents tried to arrange a marriage."

Silence.

Then Daisy laughed. "You're kidding."

"I wish I was." I said no by the way and that I have my little princess which is you.

"Good, that's my baby!" Daisy replied happily. "You don't owe anyone an apology for loving me."

Ethan smiled faintly."I know."

"Come see me soon." Daisy said, pouting her lips.

"I will."

"I miss you." She said softly.

"I miss you too."

The call ended.

For the first time that night, his shoulders relaxed.

Everything else could wait. As long as Daisy was okay...

That was enough.

...

The next morning.

Ethan walked into Anderson Group as if nothing had changed.

Employees greeted him. "Morning, Mr. Anderson."

"Good morning." He nodded back.

The receptionist looked surprised when she saw him. "Welcome back, sir."

"Thanks." He stepped into the elevator.

His phone buzzed.

An email. He ignored it.

The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor.

His access card touched the scanner. A red light flashed.

Access Denied. Ethan frowned and tried again.

Another red light.

A security guard walked over. "Good morning, sir."

"My card isn't working."

The guard checked the screen. His expression changed. "I'm... sorry."

"Sorry for what?"

"I've been instructed not to let you onto this floor."

Ethan stared at him. "There must be a mistake."

The guard shifted awkwardly. "I received the instruction this morning."

"My office is upstairs, so open the door."

The guard said slowly. "I can't."

Ethan pulled out his phone.

He called his assistant, straight to voicemail.

He called the head of finance. No answer. Then his phone buzzed again.

Another email.

His company account had been deactivated.

He opened the next one.

His access to Anderson Group's internal systems had been revoked. His name had been removed from the Falcon Investment Project.

He laughed once. It sounded empty.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket.

"So he actually did it."

The guard looked away. "I'm sorry, Mr. Anderson."

Ethan turned without another word.

...

He stopped at a nearby café. He reached for his wallet. "I'll have a black coffee."

The cashier smiled. "That'll be twenty-three dirhams."

He handed over his  card.

Declined. He frowned."Try again."

The cashier did. Declined.

Embarrassed, Ethan pulled out another card. Declined.

Then another one again was declined.

The cashier offered an awkward smile. "It's okay."

Ethan reached into his pocket and found a few folded bills that was enough for the coffee.

He picked up the coffee and walked outside.

His phone rang again.

Daisy.

He answered immediately. "Hey babe"

She was sobbing.

His grip tightened around the paper cup. "Daisy?"

"I... I don't know what to do." She said in tears.

"What happened?"

"I went back to the hospital."

His heart dropped.

"The doctor said... they found something."

"What did they find?"

"My mitral valve prolapse is getting worse." She struggled to breathe between words. "They said I can't keep delaying surgery."

Ethan's voice softened. "Hey, i'm here. Talk to me."

"They want to operate."

"When?"

"As soon as possible."

"We'll figure it out." Ethan let out a reassuring smile.

She went quiet. "The insurance won't cover everything."

"How much?"

"I... I don't know yet."

He looked across the street without really seeing anything. "I'll take care of it."

She cried harder. "I don't want to lose you."

"You won't."

"I promise."

Even as he said the words, he had no idea how he was going to keep them.

...

Across the city, Bianca stood in front of the mirror.

She adjusted the sleeves of her cream blazer.

Then she stopped.

Ethan's voice slipped into her mind.

She's so fat. She's not even my type.

Her hands froze.

A knock came at the bedroom door.

"You ready?" Her mother stepped inside.

Bianca forced a smile. "Almost."

Elena walked over and gently fixed a strand of her daughter's hair.

"You look beautiful."

Bianca looked away. "I know what you're doing."

"What am I doing?"

"Trying to make me feel better."

Elena smiled sadly. "It's because I hate seeing you doubt yourself."

"I don't." Bianca picked up her handbag. "It doesn't matter what he thinks because I don't care." The lie came too quickly.

Elena didn't call her out, she simply kissed her forehead.

"Have a wonderful first day at the office."

...

Ellington Group's headquarters buzzed with activity.

Employees hurried through the lobby.

Bianca greeted everyone with a smile. A few people congratulated her on graduating with first-class honors.

She thanked them, kept walking with utmost confidence. Nobody could tell how exhausted she felt.

...

That evening.

Daniel, Bianca's boyfriend was already waiting outside her office.

He held up two takeaway coffees. "I figured your first day deserved a celebration."

She smiled."You always know when coffee is needed."

"I know you."

They walked toward the parking lot. "You've been quiet. What happened?" Daniel asked.

Bianca told Daniel everything that happened that day, she has been keeping it and that made her chest hurt.

Daniel stopped walking. "What he said..." His jaw tightened. "...was disgusting."

Bianca stared at the coffee in her hands. "I keep telling myself it shouldn't matter."

Daniel reached for her free hand. "Listen to me."

She looked up.

"You never have to prove your worth to anyone." A small smile appeared. "Especially not someone like Ethan Anderson."

Her phone buzzed.

She ignored it.

Daniel squeezed her hand gently.

"You're perfect and beautiful just the way you are." He added, "I love you so much and that's what should matter."

Daniel leaned in and kissed her.

...

Miles away, Ethan sat alone in his apartment.

His laptop chimed.

A new message.

Sender: Boston Heart Institute.

He opened it. His eyes scanned the page.

Estimated Surgical Cost.

He kept reading. The number at the bottom made his stomach drop.

It was more money than he had left, he leaned back slowly and  covered his face with one hand.

"There has to be another way."

  • His Perfect Mistake    Chapter 15 - The Headlines.

Bianca stared at the headline like it might rearrange itself if she looked hard enough."So," she said slowly, turning to Ethan. "What exactly are we supposed to do now?"Ethan kept his eyes on the road, though his grip on the wheel had tightened. "Nothing.""Nothing?""Yes, nothing. We won't confirm it and we won't deny it either.""Ethan, it says engagement.""I know!""They're not asking about the merger anymore. They think we're actually getting married.""I know what it says, Bianca."She turned in her seat to face him properly. "Then why do you sound so calm?""Because panicking in a moving car doesn't fix anything."She let out a breath, dropping her phone into her lap like it had personally offended her. For a few seconds neither of them spoke, the hum of the tires filling the space where words should've been."My father's going to call," Bianca said eventually."Mine already has." Ethan nodded toward his phone, buzzing again in the cupholder. "Three times.""You haven't answe

The Al Noor Charity Gala arrived faster than either of them expected.By early evening, luxury cars had already begun lining up outside Dubai's most prestigious hotel, their headlights sweeping across a crowd of photographers and reporters packed three deep behind the velvet ropes.Inside her room, Bianca stood in front of the mirror, smoothing down the front of a blush pink gown Victoria had chosen for her weeks ago. Her hair fell in soft waves over one shoulder, and for the first time in longer than she could remember, she didn't immediately start searching her reflection for something wrong.Elena stepped up behind her, gently adjusting the clasp of her necklace."There." Elena smiled at her daughter's reflection. "Perfect.""Mum, it's crooked." Bianca muttered. "It's not crooked. You're nervous."Bianca let out a breath. "Is it that obvious?""Only to me." Elena rested both hands on her shoulders, meeting her eyes in the mirror. "You don't need to become someone else tonight. Jus

The next moment, he was parked outside Victor's building, engine ticking as it cooled, his hand still curled tight around the phone in his lap.Tell me you have good news.He hadn't answered right away. He wasn't sure what counted as good news anymore. The elevator ride up felt longer than it should. By the time the doors opened onto Victor's floor, Daniel had already rehearsed three different versions of what he planned to say. None of them survived the walk to Victor's office.Victor didn't look up when Daniel entered. He stood by the window, glass in hand, watching the lights of Downtown Dubai like they belonged to him personally."Sit," Victor said.Daniel remained standing. "I'd rather stand.""Suit yourself." Victor finally turned. His eyes moved once over Daniel's face, lingering just long enough on the faint red mark still visible near his jaw. "Rough afternoon?"Daniel said nothing."How much access do you have to Ellington Group?" Victor asked, setting his glass down with a

  • His Perfect Mistake    Chapter 12 - The man who couldn't let go.

By Wednesday, the entire Anderson mansion had turned into something resembling a fashion showroom.Bianca stood in the middle of Victoria's sitting room, surrounded by garment bags in every shade of gold, emerald, and deep blue, and tried, for the third time, to make her point gently."Ma'am, I really can buy my own dress."Victoria, Ethan's mum didn't look up from the rack she was flipping through, though her voice carried its usual warmth. "I'm sure you can, dear.""I don't want you going through all this trouble on my account.""It's no trouble at all." Victoria held up a deep green gown against the light, studying it carefully. "Let an old woman enjoy herself a little."Bianca smiled despite herself. "You're not old.""Flattery." Victoria glanced at her, amused. "You'll go far in this family.""I only meant...""I know what you mean." Victoria set the gown down and turned to face her properly. "Bianca, you aren't just representing yourself Friday night. You're representing two fami

  • His Perfect Mistake    Chapter 11 - Learning to pretend.

Bianca stepped into the Ellington Group lobby the next morning, already reaching for her phone to text Ethan that she'd meet him outside, when she stopped short. He was already there, standing near the reception desk, hands in his pockets, looking entirely too comfortable for a man who just called from the car."You're early," she said, walking over."So are you.""I work here." She said, giving him a warm smile. "Fair point." He almost smiled. "Do you have a minute before we head to the office?"She narrowed her eyes. "That depends on what you want!""Let's talk." He said in a casual tone. She questioned him. "About what?""Us!"Bianca blinked. "That's vague.""I mean it in the least romantic way possible." He gestured toward the door. "Walk with me."She followed him outside, more curious than annoyed, though she'd never admit that out loud."Yesterday," Ethan said, once they were out on the sidewalk, "Sophie asked about our first date. We got lucky. The coffee story worked becau

  • His Perfect Mistake    Chapter 10 - Practiced smile.

Sunday came faster than either of them wanted.Bianca stood outside the Anderson mansion for a moment before ringing the bell, smoothing down the front of her dress like that would somehow prepare her for what was waiting inside. It didn't feel like the dinner. There were no waiters carrying trays, no board members clustered near the windows discussing shares. Just cars parked casually in the driveway and the smell of something cooking drifting from an open window. The door opened before she could knock again."Bianca!" Victoria pulled her into a hug like they'd known each other for years instead of days. "Come in, come in. Everyone's already here.""Sorry, was I late?""Not at all." Victoria waved a hand. "Charles and Elena got here early. You know how your father is."Bianca smiled faintly and followed her inside. The dining room felt smaller than the one from the disastrous dinner, though it was probably the same size. Richard sat at the head of the table with a newspaper folded in
