Chapter Seventy-Nine : Cole pov

The morning after my father left, I woke up to sunlight on my face and Jay's arm around my waist.

The apartment was quiet. The city was waking up. Birds were singing outside the window. I didn't move. Didn't want to wake him. I just lay there thinking about everything. My father's words. I told him he's family. Jay's face when he came back inside. The way he looked at me. Like I was home.

"You're awake," Jay mumbled.

"I'm awake."

"You're thinking."

Jay woke up to sunlight on his face and an empty bed.He sat up. Rubbed his eyes. The sheets next to him were cold. He could hear Cole moving in the kitchen. The smell of coffee drifted through the open door. He got out of bed. Walked to the kitchen.Cole was standing by the counter. He was pouring coffee into two mugs. His hair was messy. His eyes were tired. But he was smiling."Morning," Jay said."Morning.""You're up early.""Couldn't sleep."Jay walked over. He took one of the mugs. "You looked like you slept fine.""I did. I just woke up early.""Thinking?"Cole shrugged. "Always."Jay leaned against the counter. "What were you thinking about?""You."Jay felt his face warm. "That's not an answer.""It's the only one I have."Jay smiled. He didn't say anything. He just drank his coffee. The morning was quiet. They sat on the couch. The city hummed outside. Jay stared at his coffee cup. Cole stared at the window."I've been thinking," Cole said."About what?""About the retrospe

Jay didn't sleep that night. The moment in the studio kept replaying in his head. Cole's closeness. His steady gaze. The heat between them that almost broke. The way he pulled away. He lay in bed staring at the ceiling. The apartment was dark. Cole was in the other room. The door was open. Jay could hear him moving around. He got up. Walked to the kitchen. Cole was sitting at the table. He had a glass of water in his hand. He didn't look up."Can't sleep?" Jay asked."No."Jay sat across from him. The table was small. Their knees almost touched."About earlier," Jay started.Cole put the glass down. "What about it?""I shouldn't have pulled away."Cole looked at him. His gray eyes were tired. "Then why did you?"Jay was quiet for a moment. "Because I was scared.""Of what?"Jay shook his head. "I don't know. Everything. You. Me. This."Cole leaned forward. "I don't understand."Jay rubbed his face. "I've never had this before. Someone who stays. Someone who doesn't leave."Cole's expr

The studio was quiet. Too quiet. Jay stood in front of his latest canvas, brush in hand, but he wasn't painting. He was staring. The figure on the canvas stared back. A man standing alone. His face was calm. His hands were open. But something was missing. Jay didn't know what.Cole walked in. He didn't say anything. He just stood in the doorway and watched.Jay didn't turn around. "You're here.""I'm always here."Jay put his brush down. "I'm stuck."Cole walked closer. "Stuck how?""I don't know what to paint next. I've been staring at this for three hours."Cole looked at the canvas. "It's good.""It's not finished.""Then finish it."Jay shook his head. "I don't know how."Cole moved behind him. He stood close. Not touching. Just close. Jay could feel the heat coming off him. He could smell his cologne. His heart started beating faster."Maybe you need a break," Cole said."A break?""Step away from the canvas. Clear your head."Jay turned to face him. They were inches apart. Cole'

Jay couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. The retrospective was back on. The new donor had saved everything. But something about the whole situation felt off. The timing was too perfect. The rescue came too quickly. He kept asking himself the same question. Why would someone back out and then someone else step in the very next day?"You're doing it again," Cole said."Doing what?""Thinking too much."Jay looked up from his coffee. "Something doesn't feel right.""About the donor?""About everything."Cole sat down across from him. "What doesn't feel right?"Jay set his cup down. "The first donor backed out. Then the very next day, a new donor appears. That's not how these things work.""Maybe they were waiting.""Waiting for what?"Cole shrugged. "I don't know. For the right moment."Jay shook his head. "That doesn't make sense.""It doesn't have to make sense. It just has to work."Jay leaned back in his chair. He stared at the ceiling. His mind was racing. He thought

The phone rang at 7am. Jay grabbed it before it could wake Cole."Hello?""Jay." It was Simone. Her voice was tight. "We have a problem."Jay sat up. His heart started pounding. "What kind of problem?""The museum called this morning. The donor backed out."Jay felt the words hit him like a punch. "Backed out?""They said they can't afford it anymore. The retrospective is cancelled.""But I've already painted thirteen new pieces.""I know.""I've been working for months.""I know. That's why I'm calling. I want to fight for this.""How?"Simone was quiet for a moment. "I'm going to talk to them. I'm going to show them your work. Remind them why they wanted you in the first place."Jay ran a hand through his hair. His fingers were trembling. "What if it's not enough?""Then we find another gallery.""I don't want another gallery.""I know."Jay closed his eyes. His hands were shaking. He tried to steady them. He couldn't. The room felt too small. The walls were closing in. Everything h

Jay couldn't stop thinking about the letter. It sat in his pocket like a stone. Heavy. Warm. Constant. He pulled it out every few hours. Read the same words. Folded it back up. Put it away. The handwriting was neat. Controlled. Whoever wrote it knew exactly what they were doing.Cole caught him reading it again at breakfast."You're doing it again," Cole said."Doing what?""Reading that letter."Jay folded it. Put it on the table. "I can't help it.""It's been three days.""I know.""Don't you think it's time to let it go?"Jay shook his head. "I can't. Someone knows about the donor. Someone knows I'm looking. That person knows me."Cole reached across the table. His hand covered Jay's. "That's what bothers you, isn't it?""What?""The fact that someone knows you that well."Jay pulled his hand away. "Yes.""Who could it be?""I don't know. Simone? Rivera? Your father?""Whoever it is, they're not trying to hurt you.""How do you know?"Cole pointed at the letter. "Read it again. It'
