Chapter 2

Author: Leading Gem
Emma's expression changed.

I was stunned too.

I didn't recognize any of these people. None of them were the original staff.

"Who are you?"

I lunged forward, trying to pull the housekeeper off Emma. But two other housekeepers stepped in my way.

"Where's Mark? What have you done with him?"

Mark Rudolf was the manor's longtime butler. He had served Emma faithfully for 30 years.

But now, he was nowhere to be seen.

Irene sauntered over and looked down at Emma with contempt.

"Mark? Oh, you mean that old man?"

She sneered.

"That's why you've been so arrogant. That old fossil was your lover, wasn't he? No wonder he always had it out for me."

She reached out and patted Emma's face.

"What, he didn't tell you? I fired him a long time ago. This manor is mine now. I make the rules here."

I couldn't believe my ears.

How could Edward let his mistress go this far? She had actually dared to lay a hand on Emma's staff.

Then Irene snapped her fingers.

"Take them away! Don't let them ruin the Grant family's reputation!"

Emma had never imagined something like this would happen in her own manor, so she hadn't brought any bodyguards with her.

In no time, the housekeepers started pulling her toward the entrance.

I struggled frantically to get to her.

"Mom!"

Before I could reach her, Irene slapped me hard across the face.

"Oh, I nearly forgot. You're the one who's been trying to sabotage Caleb and Anne's engagement, aren't you? Anne's already three months pregnant. If she gets upset and something happens to the baby, Caleb will never let you off the hook!"

Pregnant?

For the entire two years of my marriage, I had wanted to have a child with Caleb. But he had always told me he couldn't bear to see me go through the hardship of pregnancy.

Now I finally understood.

It wasn't that he didn't want me to suffer.

He simply didn't want a child with me.

Hearing that, Emma tightened her grip on my hand. I knew she was hurting for me.

She and my mom had been best friends for decades. After Mom passed away, Emma had treated me like her own daughter.

When she learned that I liked Caleb, she had been so happy that she couldn't sleep all night.

"That's wonderful, Maddie! I'll be your future mother-in-law. And if Caleb ever gives you any trouble, you come straight to me."

But now, Caleb had gotten another woman pregnant.

Rage immediately surged through Emma.

"That scumbag! How dare he do this to you? Don't worry, Maddie. That bastard will never have my approval. Today, I'll wait right here and make them give you an explanation!"

"Bastard?"

Just then, a shrill female voice cut through the noise from behind the crowd.

"The child I'm carrying is the Grant family's only true heir! The future of this family rests in my womb! Anyone who dares call my child with Caleb a bastard has a death wish."

I looked up.

A woman dressed in a custom gown was glaring at me with undisguised disgust.

The moment I saw her, my entire body stiffened.

Six months ago, I had seen her stepping out of Caleb's car. Caleb had immediately explained that she was his secretary, Anne Mercer.

I had believed him without the slightest suspicion.

The moment Irene saw Anne arrive, she snatched my phone and handed it over.

"Anne, look! These two shameless women are a pair of homewreckers! They're trying to seduce both Edward and Caleb!"

When Anne saw the wedding photos of Caleb and me on my phone, her face twisted with anger.

But then, a cold smile crept across her lips.

"Mom, since they're so eager to get inside, let them come. They'll wish they hadn't."

Irene looked confused for a second.

Anne continued, "Tie them up and stuff them into the gift boxes. When Mr. Grant and Caleb arrive, we'll give them a huge surprise."

Gift boxes?

My heart sank.

Almost without thinking, I blurted out, "No! Mom is claustrophobic!"

Irene's eyes lit up.

"Really? That's even better."

She laughed and took Anne's hand.

"Anne, you're brilliant. That's exactly how you handle shameless homewreckers."

The crowd of influencers burst out laughing.

"Wait, isn't Caleb getting engaged to Anne tonight? What better gift for the happy couple than taking down a homewrecker?"

"Exactly! Let's help the Grant family clean up and take out the trash before Christmas!"

"Claustrophobic? That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard!"

"Right! A mistress belongs in the shadows anyway. What nonsense is she talking about?"

The housekeepers pressed forward, surrounding us with vicious looks.

Fury exploded inside me.

I glared at them and yelled, "The deed to this manor has my mother-in-law's name on it! Let's see which one of you dares to lay a finger on us!"

Edward thought Emma was worried about him and immediately rushed into the hospital room."Emma, you're awake! "Look at Madison. She's becoming more and more disrespectful—"Before he could finish, Emma used every ounce of strength she had to turn her gaze away from him in disgust."Edward, I want a divorce. Starting today, take your son and get out of the Grant family."Edward went completely still.Gwen stepped in, cutting off whatever excuse was about to come out of his mouth."Mr. Grant? No. Mr. Fowler. Did you honestly believe that marrying into the Grant family and taking their name made it yours?"She held up a flash drive and smiled."The money your son paid wasn't enough. I've recovered every video those influencers were paid to delete. If you still have any dignity left, sign the papers immediately.""Gwen! You're just a nobody on the payroll!" Caleb shouted furiously. "Who gave you the right to speak?"Emma seized the glass of water beside her bed and threw it at

Edward and Caleb froze when they saw Irene and Anne. All the color drained from their faces."What? The fountain?" they blurted out.Only then did they realize that the people trapped in the fountain at Grant Manor the previous night had been Emma and me."No… That's not what happened…" Edward waved his hands frantically, desperate to distance himself from the situation."Weren't you overseas? I've never seen these women before. They're insane!"Caleb rushed to my side at once."Maddie, my darling, please listen to me. It's all a misunderstanding! I have absolutely nothing to do with them!"The moment the word "darling" left his mouth, everyone froze.Anne looked like she had been hit by a thunderbolt. Her sobs died in her throat. She pointed at me, then at Caleb, as if she'd just been told the sky was green."Caleb… What do you mean by that?"The influencers immediately swung their cameras toward her."Wait—so she's the real wife, and you're the other woman?""Holy cra

In the video, Irene stood in front of a livestream camera with a smug expression."I'm the lady of Grant Manor," she declared. "If I want it pink, it's pink. Since when do strangers get a say in what I do with my own home?"The camera then turned to Anne, who was standing beside her.Anne hung on Irene's arm with a sneer. "Grant Manor? That's nothing. Even if it were the entire Grant family legacy, my mother could tear it down and paint it pink whenever she felt like it. With Mr. Grant and Caleb spoiling us, who would dare say a word about it?"I had specifically instructed Gwen to buy this video from one of the influencers. The camera angle had been deliberately selected to exclude me and Emma from the frame. After viewing it, Edward and Caleb were obviously panicked."This is ridiculous!"Edward's forehead was slick with sweat. He waved his hands in panic. "Grant Manor was your mother's wedding gift! They're all lies! That woman has no claim to Grant Manor. We've never see

Edward wiped the sweat off his forehead. "We were just asking. How would we know what happened?"Caleb quickly grabbed my hand as well."Exactly. The moment we found out Mom was hospitalized, we rushed right over. If we'd known beforehand, why would we be this worried?"I just hummed and pulled my hand free. Then I turned to Edward. "Dad, didn't you tell us you were in a meeting with Caleb? Then why did Caleb tell me he was out diving?"Edward, however, was surprisingly calm this time. He let out an awkward chuckle. "It was a remote meeting. Madison, you don't do much business. You wouldn't understand."Of course. After lying to Emma and me for so many years, there was no excuse they couldn't come up with.Since I wasn't responding, Caleb shook my arm. "Madison, you said something at the manor made Mom collapse. What happened?"I bit my lip hard, suppressing my anger, then pulled out my tablet and opened the videos those influencers had uploaded. Both of them went rig

Emma could barely breathe, but she still forced the words out."No… I won't have it…"Irene broke out of her stupor and flung herself into Edward's arms, sobbing dramatically. "Darling, she's lost her mind! What business is it of hers if Caleb marries Anne?"Seeing her tears, Edward hurriedly patted her back to comfort her. "You're my woman, which makes you like a mother to Caleb. You have every right to make decisions about his future. Besides, Anne is carrying Caleb's child now. Of course they should get married."Anne's eyes glistened with tears at his words. She nodded and gave her reply. "Caleb, I do!"The crowd burst into cheers and swarmed around them as they walked toward the manor."How romantic!""Edward and Irene were made for each other, and now their children too! It's a fairy tale come true.""Exactly! There are only ten minutes left until midnight! Forget those two women and let's go inside!"Soon, the voices outside faded to whispers, then silence.Emm

Caleb looked away fast. He nervously cupped Anne's face and said, "Who is that crazy woman? She didn't frighten you or the baby, did she?"Then he turned and roared at the household staff behind him."What are you standing around for? Close her box already! If Anne gets upset and something happens to the baby, every single one of you will be out of a job tomorrow."I touched my face. My hair was plastered everywhere, and my makeup was probably ruined. He must not have recognized me at first glance. Before I could react, the lid slammed shut, and darkness instantly swallowed me whole.Edward's voice followed. "Irene, are you okay?" he asked, sounding anxious. "I heard you were in trouble. I didn't even let Caleb finish choosing the ring. We came as fast as we could. Who dares to bully you at Grant Manor? Do they have no respect for me?"Before Irene or Anne could say anything, the household staff and influencers were already pointing toward the fountain, all shouting over each
