Chapter 6

Author: The Genesis
Early the next morning, Lena was taken away by Henry’s men. She struggled with all her might, but her resistance only earned her a tighter, more painful grip. Before she could even shout for help a second time, a sharp blow struck the back of her neck, and the world went black.

When she finally regained consciousness, she was surrounded by pitch darkness. Fists rained down on her body. The dull thuds of the blows mixed with her stifled groans of agony, and the pain was unbearable.

Panic washed over Lena, and she could not help but scream out, “Who are you people? Why did you kidnap me?”

The only response she received was an even more brutal beating. When the sickening crack of a dislocated bone echoed in her ears, Lena’s vision went white, and cold sweat instantly drenched her clothes. By the time the two-hour torture session finally ended, she was slumped on the freezing ground, too weak to even move a finger.

Just then, someone kicked her in the side. As she curled up in pain, she heard the sound of a phone dialling.

“Mr. Hale, your order has been taken care of!”

The blood in Lena’s veins froze. The throbbing ache in her bones and the pounding pressure in her temples could not compare to the chill that spread across her chest. So, his claim about hiring her as a “maid” was a lie; his true motive was to exact revenge for Ava.

Could a man turn heartless the moment he stopped loving someone? Henry truly was a cruel one.

Unable to hold on any longer, she surrendered to the exhaustion, and her vision went dark. When Lena opened her eyes again, she was hit with the suffocating scent of rubbing alcohol.

“Lenny, do you finally understand your mistake this time?”

Henry’s calm, detached voice drifted over from the side of the hospital bed.

Lena turned her head mechanically. Her lips twitched, and her voice came out hoarse and laced with bitter sarcasm.

“Henry, tell me, have you taught me enough of a lesson yet?”

Henry frowned, feeling inexplicably irritated.

“I only wanted to break your stubborn pride, and you can’t even take that? When you smashed that bottle over Ava’s head, did you ever stop to think about whether she could take it?”

Lena stared at him, finding the entire situation ironic. The horrific trauma he had just inflicted upon her was a hundred times worse than a single broken bottle. In fact, it was outright torture. Yet, he seemed to believe that the punishment was too lenient.

Beneath the hospital blanket, Lena clenched her fists so hard that her fingernails dug deep into her palms, the sharp pain making her head spin. Her bitten lips had also turned pale, and she suddenly lost all willpower to argue.

She turned to look at the ceiling and whispered, “Thank you for the lesson. I know what I did wrong now. You can leave. I’d like to rest.”

Seeing the usually arrogant and spoiled woman surrender so easily, Henry found himself surprised.

He pressed his lips together and softened his tone. “Lenny, just be good from now on and stop making a scene. It’ll be the anniversary of your mother’s passing in a few days. You should rest up and get well soon. Once you’re discharged, I’ll visit her with you.”

As he spoke, he leaned forward to tuck Lena in, but she yanked the sheets away, turning her back toward him to face the wall. Her rejection could not have been more obvious.

Henry’s hand froze mid-air. He hesitated for a moment but ultimately chose not to push further. With a sigh, he walked out of the room.

Lena stayed in the hospital for three full days. During this time, Ava posted particularly frequently on social media, as if she were deliberately showing off. One day, it was a post about Henry driving all across the city just to find a specific lollipop that had long been out of production. The next day, it was a picture of a limited-edition, ultra-luxury diamond necklace that Henry had bought out globally for her. The day after that, it was a snapshot of Henry bending down, carefully and tenderly bandaging a wound on Ava's skin…

Lena scrolled through the photos, a form of emotional self-harm. Watching the tenderness that had once belonged exclusively to her being redirected toward Ava made her heart ache fiercely at first, but it eventually turned numb. She forced herself to slice Henry out of her heart, piece by piece, until that space was entirely hollowed out, leaving no room for him ever again.

The day she was discharged from the hospital happened to be the anniversary of her mother's death. Henry, who had promised to accompany her to visit her mother's grave, was nowhere to be found. Lena let out a self-deprecating laugh, mocking herself for actually expecting him to be there.

Just as she hailed a cab by the curb, her phone buzzed with a text message from Henry.

[Lenny, an urgent matter came up at the office. Head over to the cemetery and wait for me there. I’ll be over soon.]

Lena’s thumb hovered over the screen for a long time before she finally replied.

[Okay.]

She was leaving soon anyway, and at least before she did, she did not want her mother to see she was struggling.

When the cab arrived at the cemetery gates, Lena got out and began her wait. She stood there from the peak of the afternoon sun until the sky faded into a deep twilight, but there was still no sign of Henry.

The night breeze carried a chill that made her arms feel cold. Slowly, her patience drained away, and the warmth on her face vanished. As the very last remnant of twilight faded from the horizon, she gritted her teeth, turned around, and began walking up the hillside alone.

She had just reached the halfway point of the hill when her phone notified her that she had a new message. In it, a video was attached.

She was too astonished to speak.Sydney rushed forward, immediately grabbing Lena’s hand and pulling her toward the exit. “There’s no time to explain. Let’s get out of here first!”As Sydney dragged Lena forward, Lucas kept pace right beside them, effortlessly shoving away the maids who tried to swarm them.“What is going on? Sydney, how did you even end up here with him?” Lena asked as they ran.“The moment I got your SOS text, I sent people to investigate it. That’s how I found out Henry had kidnapped you onto this private island,” Sydney explained, her words flying out at lightning speed. “But I didn’t have enough manpower on short notice to guarantee a rescue right under Henry’s nose. And right around then, Lucas tracked me down. He said he knew you and wanted to team up.”She shot Lena a wink and teased, “Not bad, girl. Henry’s face instantly drained of color. His lips trembled so hard that he could not form words.Looking at his pathetic state, Lena felt a twisted sense of satisfaction bubble up inside her, and she deliberately took her time to continue, “If you hadn’t shown up, I probably would have dated him, fallen in love, gotten married, and maybe by now… we would have had a beautiful child together–”“Stop it!” Henry roared, his eyes bloodshot. “Lenny, I’m begging you. Please don’t say another word!”“Heh,” Lena snorted. “You need to understand that from the exact moment you kidnapped me, brought me to this place, and forced me to marry you, the only thing I have left for you is pure hatred.”Henry could not take another second of it. He stumbled to his feet and fled the room in a blind panic once again.Lena watched as he left, the warmth in her eyes fading into ice. She had to find a way out of there as soon as possible. “I am not marrying you!”Lena’s chest heaved with fury. The absolute absurdity of the situation made her blood boil.As if he had not heard a single word she said, Henry carried on casually. “I had a few more custom wedding dresses made for you. Let’s eat first, and then I’ll take you to try them on.”He reached out to grab her hand, but Lena slapped it away and bolted toward the front door, desperate to escape that place immediately. To her surprise, Henry did not even try to stop her. However, the moment she shoved the front door open, she understood why he was so confident.Outside, there were no city streets. Instead, a massive estate unfolded before her. A solitary villa stood squarely in the center of a manicured lawn. In the distance, people who looked like staff members were moving about, and the entire property was surrounded by a dense, endless forest that stretched as far as the eye could see.“Where are we?”Lena whipped around, glaring furiously at Henry as he stroll

Lena’s hand froze mid-air, her fingertips hovering just above the clay she was about to grab. She truly had not expected Lucas to lay his feelings bare out of nowhere, and a sudden wave of heat rushed to her ears, leaving them burning. As she turned her head, she found herself staring straight into those emerald-green eyes. She had always known how captivating his gaze could be when he was serious, but facing it up close made her heart skip a beat. After just a second, she hurriedly averted her gaze, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of the workbench.“Lucas… why do you have a crush on me?” Her eyelashes fluttered as she asked in a soft voice.Lucas tilted his head slightly. “Do I need a reason for that?”Lena bit her lip. “I… I might not be the person you think I am.”“I’ve never looked at you through a rose-colored lens,” Lucas said, leaning in a little closer, his tone turning earnest. “The Lena I see secretly passes out leftover bread to the homeless at the corner of t

Henry's face drained of color. He slumped onto the floor, looking utterly defeated, as he muttered repeatedly under his breath, “Lenny, you can’t do this to me…”The windchimes by the entrance jingled once more, and Lucas pushed the door open, holding a bag of freshly baked cookies in his hand.“Lena!”He called out enthusiastically, but his voice trailed off as his eyes locked onto Henry’s bloodshot gaze. The blonde man froze for a second, his brows knitting together. “Is he bothering you again? Do you want me to throw him out?”Lena glanced down at Henry, who was still paralyzed on the floor, and then looked over at Lucas by the door. She gave Lucas a small wave, gesturing for him to come over.Confused, Lucas walked over and came to a stop. Before he could ask anything, Lena stood up from her lounge chair, walked straight up to him, and then called out, “Henry!”Henry turned his head like a lifeless doll, his eyes hollow.Lena reached out and wrapped her arm around Lucas’s,

Henry returned to his hotel room, feeling completely hollowed out. He had caught the earliest flight possible to get there. The moment his feet touched the ground, he had rushed over to find her like a madman, without even pausing to take a breather. Now, every ounce of strength felt like it had been drained from his body. Even lifting his hand felt like a monumental effort. He had no idea how to make things right with Lena, but he knew with absolute certainty that he could not lose her.As he collapsed onto the bed, an overwhelming exhaustion washed over him, and a blur of fragmented visions flashed before his eyes. In a dazed state, he drifted off into a deep sleep. In his dream, he saw the past life Lena had spoken of. He was floating in mid-air like a detached bystander, watching another version of himself make completely foreign choices. At the wedding in that past life, Ava had similarly used suicide to threaten him. His expression back then had been even colder than it was t
