Chapter 8

Author: The Genesis
Lena sat alone on the bench in the police station, wrapped in a jacket a female officer had handed her, her body still trembling uncontrollably. Not far away, a few thugs were crouching in the corner, getting aggressively chewed out by a police officer.

When Henry rushed into the station, his eyes immediately fell on Lena’s disheveled state. The cut on her hand was still oozing blood, her right ankle was swollen, and her dress was stained with dirt and grass blades. Frowning, he walked over quickly and bent down in front of her.

“Lenny, what happened? Did you get into trouble again?”

When he received the call from the station, he did not even listen to the full details before racing over in a panic.

Lena raised her eyes, her gaze hollow. If she had not managed to grab her phone off the ground while fighting for her life, and if a passing patrol car had not happened to spot her, she probably would not have made it through. Yet, Henry’s very first reaction was to assume she had caused trouble.

A smile tugged at her lips, and tears began to stream down her face. That look made Henry’s chest tighten with a strange sense of unease. Just as he was about to speak, an officer walked over and signaled that they were free to go.

Without a single second of hesitation, Lena stood up and walked out. Henry could only nod to the officer and quickly follow after her. He reached out to grab her wrist, only to realize a large patch of skin had been scraped off, the dried blood looking exceptionally stark against her pale skin.

Concerned, he asked, “How did you manage to do this to yourself?”

Lena did not say a word, continuing forward in silence.

An inexplicable irritation washed over Henry. He could not wrap his head around why she was throwing a tantrum, but her cold, distant attitude made him feel uncomfortable.

“Fine, let’s just get you home first!” He frowned, his tone carrying a trace of helpless exasperation.

On the drive back, Lena remained silent, and Henry found the quiet unnatural. In the past, whenever she got into trouble, she would always make a huge fuss and demand that he clean up after her. However, her behavior today made it seem like her very soul had been sucked out of her.

The atmosphere inside the car grew heavier by the minute. By the time they reached her apartment, neither of them had spoken a single word.

“Lenny,” Henry called out to her.

Lena glanced back at him before turning into the apartment. A few moments later, she walked back out carrying a pile of things. They were all gifts he had given her over the years.

Right before his eyes, she dumped everything into the trash can and ignited a lighter. Flames began to burn at the wrapping paper, making a sharp crackling sound.

Henry froze for a moment before stepping forward quickly. “What are you doing?”

“Yesterday, you didn’t show up at the cemetery. Where were you?”

Lena stared at him, refusing to miss even the slightest flicker of emotion on his face.

Henry’s eyes darted away, and he let out a sigh. “Something urgent came up at the office and tied me down. Are you throwing a fit over this?”

Lena’s face turned pale, and the last spark of light in her eyes died out. She stopped looking at him. Instead, she quietly watched the fire consume the items she had once treasured above all else, until they finally turned into a pile of ash.

“Are you done throwing your tantrum now?”

Henry looked at her, a hint of hesitation in his tone. Just then, his phone suddenly rang. After answering and exchanging a few brief words, his expression grew visibly anxious. He hung up hurriedly and turned back to Lena.

“I’ll have someone deliver an identical set of everything you just burned to you.”

“No need,” Lena finally spoke, her voice raspy and hollow. “I don’t want them anymore.”

For some reason, Henry’s heart skipped a beat, but he shrugged it off as her simply being stubborn.

He massaged his temples and said, “Fine, once we’re married, I’ll get you whatever you want.”

Then, he glanced down at a text on his phone, his feet already moving toward the door.

“I have somewhere I need to be, so I have to run. I won’t be coming over for the next few days.

“Lenny,” he said, looking back at her with a hint of impatience, “you really need to rein in your temper. I can’t clean up your messes forever.”

With that, he turned and walked away at a brisk pace, never looking back.

Lena stood in place, watching his figure fade into the distance, a bitter smile gracing her lips.

“Goodbye, Henry.”

Her voice was very soft, and like the breeze, it dissipated into the air the moment it left her lips.

Henry paused for a second at the doorway, but thinking it might have just been an illusion, he quickly strode away.

Lena pulled out her phone. A message from Chase was sitting quietly on the screen.

[One billion dollars has been transferred to your account. Leave as soon as possible before the wedding.]

She packed her belongings, left the apartment in Sydney’s hands, and went to the embassy to pick up her documents. Then, she took a cab straight to the airport. Standing before a trash can in the terminal, she snapped her SIM card in half, tossed it inside, and walked toward the boarding gate without looking back.

The plane taxied and took off. As it soared through the clouds, the city outside the window gradually shrank into a speck before disappearing entirely. From that moment on, they would go their separate ways.

“You guys…”Lena stared at the two people standing at the door. She was too astonished to speak.Sydney rushed forward, immediately grabbing Lena’s hand and pulling her toward the exit. “There’s no time to explain. Let’s get out of here first!”As Sydney dragged Lena forward, Lucas kept pace right beside them, effortlessly shoving away the maids who tried to swarm them.“What is going on? Sydney, how did you even end up here with him?” Lena asked as they ran.“The moment I got your SOS text, I sent people to investigate it. That’s how I found out Henry had kidnapped you onto this private island,” Sydney explained, her words flying out at lightning speed. “But I didn’t have enough manpower on short notice to guarantee a rescue right under Henry’s nose. And right around then, Lucas tracked me down. He said he knew you and wanted to team up.”She shot Lena a wink and teased, “Not bad, girl. Henry’s face instantly drained of color. His lips trembled so hard that he could not form words.Looking at his pathetic state, Lena felt a twisted sense of satisfaction bubble up inside her, and she deliberately took her time to continue, “If you hadn’t shown up, I probably would have dated him, fallen in love, gotten married, and maybe by now… we would have had a beautiful child together–”“Stop it!” Henry roared, his eyes bloodshot. “Lenny, I’m begging you. Please don’t say another word!”“Heh,” Lena snorted. “You need to understand that from the exact moment you kidnapped me, brought me to this place, and forced me to marry you, the only thing I have left for you is pure hatred.”Henry could not take another second of it. He stumbled to his feet and fled the room in a blind panic once again.Lena watched as he left, the warmth in her eyes fading into ice. She had to find a way out of there as soon as possible. “I am not marrying you!”Lena’s chest heaved with fury. The absolute absurdity of the situation made her blood boil.As if he had not heard a single word she said, Henry carried on casually. “I had a few more custom wedding dresses made for you. Let’s eat first, and then I’ll take you to try them on.”He reached out to grab her hand, but Lena slapped it away and bolted toward the front door, desperate to escape that place immediately. To her surprise, Henry did not even try to stop her. However, the moment she shoved the front door open, she understood why he was so confident.Outside, there were no city streets. Instead, a massive estate unfolded before her. A solitary villa stood squarely in the center of a manicured lawn. In the distance, people who looked like staff members were moving about, and the entire property was surrounded by a dense, endless forest that stretched as far as the eye could see.“Where are we?”Lena whipped around, glaring furiously at Henry as he stroll

Lena’s hand froze mid-air, her fingertips hovering just above the clay she was about to grab. She truly had not expected Lucas to lay his feelings bare out of nowhere, and a sudden wave of heat rushed to her ears, leaving them burning. As she turned her head, she found herself staring straight into those emerald-green eyes. She had always known how captivating his gaze could be when he was serious, but facing it up close made her heart skip a beat. After just a second, she hurriedly averted her gaze, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of the workbench.“Lucas… why do you have a crush on me?” Her eyelashes fluttered as she asked in a soft voice.Lucas tilted his head slightly. “Do I need a reason for that?”Lena bit her lip. “I… I might not be the person you think I am.”“I’ve never looked at you through a rose-colored lens,” Lucas said, leaning in a little closer, his tone turning earnest. “The Lena I see secretly passes out leftover bread to the homeless at the corner of t

Henry's face drained of color. He slumped onto the floor, looking utterly defeated, as he muttered repeatedly under his breath, “Lenny, you can’t do this to me…”The windchimes by the entrance jingled once more, and Lucas pushed the door open, holding a bag of freshly baked cookies in his hand.“Lena!”He called out enthusiastically, but his voice trailed off as his eyes locked onto Henry’s bloodshot gaze. The blonde man froze for a second, his brows knitting together. “Is he bothering you again? Do you want me to throw him out?”Lena glanced down at Henry, who was still paralyzed on the floor, and then looked over at Lucas by the door. She gave Lucas a small wave, gesturing for him to come over.Confused, Lucas walked over and came to a stop. Before he could ask anything, Lena stood up from her lounge chair, walked straight up to him, and then called out, “Henry!”Henry turned his head like a lifeless doll, his eyes hollow.Lena reached out and wrapped her arm around Lucas’s,

Henry returned to his hotel room, feeling completely hollowed out. He had caught the earliest flight possible to get there. The moment his feet touched the ground, he had rushed over to find her like a madman, without even pausing to take a breather. Now, every ounce of strength felt like it had been drained from his body. Even lifting his hand felt like a monumental effort. He had no idea how to make things right with Lena, but he knew with absolute certainty that he could not lose her.As he collapsed onto the bed, an overwhelming exhaustion washed over him, and a blur of fragmented visions flashed before his eyes. In a dazed state, he drifted off into a deep sleep. In his dream, he saw the past life Lena had spoken of. He was floating in mid-air like a detached bystander, watching another version of himself make completely foreign choices. At the wedding in that past life, Ava had similarly used suicide to threaten him. His expression back then had been even colder than it was t
