Amara found herself in an uneasy feeling, the moment when things had taken a turn for the worse remaining elusive.

Was it the spread of the lie, a fabrication that people had begun to embrace as truth?

Or perhaps it was Adrian's instant transformation. Regardless of the that,a profound exhaustion settled over her.

"Can we leave now?" she said in a barely audible whisper, the words escaping her lips like a sigh of resignation.

Adrian, however, remained unbothered, his gaze fixed elsewhere. "Not yet," he responded, his tone, cold.

Amara exhaled quietly. "My face is starting to hurt from smiling," she confessed, the strain of forcing something to make people believe.

"That's unfortunate," Adrian replied, a statement that offered no sympathy, only a cold acknowledgement of her discomfort.

Turning to face him, Amara challenged, "That’s all you have to say?"

"Yes," he said.

She stared at him, a silent accusation in her stare. "...You're unbelievable," she finally uttered, the words were sincere.

"I've been told that," he added, a remark that felt utterly unhelpful in the face of her frustration.

Before Amara could complain again or confusion, Adrian unexpectedly leaned in, even closer to her now, creating an uncomfortable intimacy.

Amara was frozen, her senses on high alert.

"What are you doing?" she managed to whisper.

"Fixing this," he stated, his intentions were not clear.

Before she could react, his hand went up, its touch feather light as it brushed against a stray strand of her hair.

Amara’s breath stiff in her throat.

The gesture was not hard, not careless either, but surprisingly gentle and intentional.

"There," he said, his voice a low murmur.

Her heart pounding in her chest. "...What was that?" she inquired, her voice laced with confusion.

"Your hair," he said, his explanation direct. "It was out of place."

Amara blinked, struggling to reconcile his action with his words. "That's your excuse?"

"It's not an excuse," he stated.

She fell silent.

The issue wasn't the physical act of him touching her hair; it was the unexpected feeling it evoked. A feeling she found deeply unsettling.

"You're overthinking it," Adrian stated, attempting to dismiss her reaction.

Amara frowned, her expression, firm. "I'm not."

"You are,” he said.

Crossing her arms defensively, she declared, "I'm just reacting normally."

"That's debatable," he replied, his calmness, adding to her frustration.

She exhaled sharply, the tension was obvious.

"Why are you like this?" she asked.

"Like what?" he inquired.

"Calm. All the time.” You do things so effortlessly.

Adrian paused, a brief flicker of something unreadable crossing his face. Then, he replied, "It's easier.”

His answer felt incomplete.

But before she could press him further, a person walked past them, looking in their direction.

Quickly, Adrian moved closer, his hand now resting lightly on her back.

Amara stiffened. "Relax," he murmured, his voice a low, soothing sound.

"I am relaxed," she whispered back.

"You're not."

"I am."

"You're tense."

"That's because you keep touching me!" she exclaimed, the frustration finally spilling over.

"That's because people are watching," he said. That made her go silent.

The truth of his statement hit home, and Amara glanced around quickly. He was right, as he so often seemed to be.

"...This is part of the job?" she asked.

"Yes," he confirmed.

A resigned sigh escaped her. "I should have charged more."

A subtle reaction flickered across Adrian's face, almost a hint of amusement. "A noted mistake," he acknowledged.

Amara shook her head, "This is insane," she declared.

"And yet," he replied, his tone measured, "You agreed to it." She hated the fact that he kept reminding her of that and the fact that he’s always right.

"Next time," she stated firmly, "I'm reading the full terms before accepting anything."

"There was no contract," he pointed out.

"That's even worse!" she exclaimed, the lack of formal agreement making the entire situation feel even more precarious.

For a fleeting moment, Adrian's lips curved upwards, a hint of a smile playing on his face.

Almost.

Then, the ambient music in the hall shifted, the melody softening, becoming slower and more intimate.

Amara noticed the change immediately.

"...No," she said.

Adrian turned his attention to her, his brow furrowed slightly. "No what?"

"Don't even think about it," she added, her warning sharp.

"Think about what?" he showed ignorance.

Her eyes rolled, a clear understanding passing between them. "You know exactly what I mean.”

He was silent.

Then, he extended his hand, palm open, a silent invitation.

Amara stared at his outstretched hand. "...You're joking."

"I'm not," he confirmed, his gaze steady and unwavering.

Her heart sank.

"I don't dance," she stated quickly, a desperate attempt to avoid it.

"You do tonight."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"This isn't part of the deal!" she protested, her voice rising.

"It is now," he declared, his assertion final.

"I will embarrass you," she warned, her voice tight with a mixture of anger and apprehension.

"I doubt it."

"You should."

He didn't lower his hand, remaining perfectly still, simply waiting.

And somehow, that unwavering calm made refusal feel increasingly difficult. "...This is a bad idea," she murmured, her voice barely audible.

"I know," he responded.

Slowly, reluctantly, Amara placed her hand in his. "Fine," she muttered, the word a bitter pill.

Adrian didn't react outwardly, but he simply drew her closer, a feeling that felt even more intense than before.

Her breath seized again. His hand settled at her waist, steady and firm. "Just follow," he instructed.

"I don't follow," she countered, her spirit not entirely broken.

"You do tonight."

The music swelled, soft and slow, enveloping them.

And before Amara could start another argument, he moved. And with that movement, Amara found herself with no choice but to move with him.

She surrendered to the rhythm and the direction of his lead.
