Chapter 4

Author: Lynn Green
I just thought Leonard was working too hard because he was too eager to build a future with me.

I even felt some regret. If I hadn't insisted on having him accompany me for my birthday, I thought this wouldn't have happened.

Ever since then, I would feel a dull ache in my leg on rainy days.

I had always thought that I was just getting what I deserved.

But now, this woman who claimed to be his wife told me that when I was vulnerable and calling for help in the mountains while enduring the terrifying pain, Leonard had rushed home overnight to make sure another woman felt safe, all because she had coughed a little during a video call.

I thought, "What exactly am I to him? Did our five-year relationship even mean anything to him?"

Before I could think things through, Tanya had already returned from the restroom.

Noticing that I was sitting in silence, she said considerately, "Are you tired? It's okay—you can rest for a bit. We still have plenty of time, so we can resume later."

I no longer had the energy to deal with her. I just nodded numbly.

She found a spot to sit. After examining me for a long time, she suddenly spoke up. "Actually, now that I take a closer look at you, we kind of look like each other. No wonder I felt an instant connection with you. We might have been sisters in another universe."

I looked up at her. I had to admit that we did indeed look somewhat alike.

Only our lips were completely different.

I suddenly remembered that Leonard would never take the initiative to kiss me when we got intimate.

People always said that kissing was the most direct expression of love.

There were several occasions when I let my feelings get the better of me and asked him to kiss me.

But every single time, he would tilt his head away to dodge it. He brushed it off with an excuse that he didn't like being distracted.

I had believed him back then, but now, everything was as clear as day.

He never disliked kisses.

He just didn't like my lips, which were nothing like hers.

Just then, Tanya's phone rang. In her hurry, she accidentally put the call on speakerphone.

"Tanya, you're out alone, so be careful, okay? Remember, don't get a cab at night. Just ask the driver to pick you up. I've made some herbal tea for you, so be sure to come home and drink it while it's hot."

I knew that voice all too well.

Just a week ago, I was at the hospital, tirelessly caring for the owner of that voice.

It was Melissa Hinton, Leonard's mother and also the woman I had treated as my own mother for five years.

My mother passed away when I was just a child, so I never experienced much of a mother's love.

For the past five years, Melissa had treated me with sincerity. She would always worry about my well-being and protect me whenever she could.

She even pitied me for having to pinch pennies, so she would always slip me some extra money on the side.

I treated her like my own mother.

She had always been in poor health, and she was constantly coming down with one minor illness after another.

Most of the money I earned went to Leonard for his business ventures, and the rest was mostly given to Melissa to help pay for her medical bills.

Tanya complained half-heartedly, "Oh, come on, Mom, I get it already. Why are you always worrying about me like I'm a child?"

The middle-aged woman on the other end of the line sounded like she was smiling. "You're the only daughter-in-law I have. Who else should I pamper if not you? I can't lose you, you know. How else am I going to get a grandchild?"

Tanya seemed a little embarrassed as she gave me a smile. "Alright, Mom, I'm keeping someone waiting. I'll hang up now. Bye."

After ending the call, Tanya casually explained to me with a sigh, "The old folks just love to nag. You get it, don't you?"

If it were any other situation, I might have just smiled and said yes.

But just seconds ago, I found out that her mother-in-law, who pampered her so much, was the same person I had been caring for so earnestly and treating as my own mother.

I couldn't bring myself to agree.

"Tell your father to let my son off, or I'll end my life right here, right now!"Melissa's words were foul and filled with malice. The butler was about to get someone to drive her away, but I stopped him.I stood at the gates and looked calmly at Melissa. "Mrs. Goodman, I've treated you like my own mother for five whole years. Most of the money I earned was used to pay for your medical bills. I never owed you anything."Your son was the one who deceived me for five years. He trampled on my feelings just to get revenge on my father. You and your son worked together to treat me like a joke. Don't you find it absurd that you're making a fuss here right now? I've completely cut ties with Leonard, so don't ever bother me again."With that, I turned around and entered the villa. I told the butler to close the front door. No matter what insults she threw outside the gate, I no longer responded to her. Those filthy people and messy issues had no place in my life anymore. After everything

Everyone at the scene instantly fell silent, and the same thought must have crossed their minds. "Mr. Anderson?"The smiles froze on Leonard's and Tanya's faces. The glee and mockery on their faces slowly faded, only to be replaced by disbelief and shock. The man in front of them was the top decision-maker at Leonard's company. He had the power to fire Leonard with just a single word. But at that moment, he was treating Dad with utmost respect and pleading desperately with him.Leonard stiffened, and his fingers trembled as he pointed at Dad. He stammered, "H-he's…"Leonard's superior straightened up and glared coldly at Leonard and Tanya. Then, he said in a stern tone, "This is the head of Anderson Group and the richest man in Rochmond, Mr. Marcus Anderson! You've offended Mr. Anderson's daughter, and you still dare spout such nonsense here? Do you have a death wish?""Daughter?" Leonard and Tanya thought, "Rena is Marcus Anderson's only daughter?"They looked like they had be

When the people around us heard that, they turned to look at me with curious and judging looks in their eyes. Then, they began to whisper among themselves.Someone asked, "Who's this? She looks kind of plain. Why would she attend an event like this?"Another whispered, "I heard she's Mr. Goodman's ex-girlfriend. She went against her family's wishes and eloped with him, but she got dumped in the end. I bet she deserved it."Someone else stated, "She's reeking of poverty. She's probably here to latch onto someone wealthy."When Tanya heard those whispers, her grin widened. She lifted her hand on purpose to show off the ring on her finger. "Look, Rena. Leonard just bought me a brand new ring worth 80 million dollars. You've never seen such an expensive thing in your entire life, have you?"Leonard wrapped an arm around Tanya's waist as he announced, "Tanya is my legal wife, so of course, she deserves the best from me. She's nothing like a certain woman who threw herself at a man for

As soon as Dad met Leonard, he could see the deep-seated inferiority and warped obsession Leonard possessed. So, he was adamantly against me being with Leonard. But back then, I was so blinded by love that I refused to hear a single word of it. I just thought Dad was biased against poor people, and I believed Leonard truly loved me.I thought that as long as I loved him, I could overcome everything. I thought that if I suffered with him, he would grow to love me. I thought that if I gave up on everything, I would be able to experience true happiness. But now, I realized that I had been an utter fool."If you never loved me, why didn't you let me go sooner? Why would you lie to me for five whole years?" I looked at him as I spoke in a calm, emotionless tone.My heart had turned cold, so even if I got hurt some more, I would be numb to it. Raising a brow, Leonard spoke in a shameless tone that carried a hint of mockery. "I didn't have to spend money on you, and you'd even work for

I looked at Tanya, whom Leonard was safely protecting in his arms. She leaned against his chest, her smile filled with glee and disdain. "That's right. I've known about you since the start."Her voice was soft, yet every word she said pierced right through me. "Leonard said you're a cheap woman who ignored your family's protests, eloped with him, and basically paid him just to keep him around. Even when you were bullied, you only suffered in silence. You're such a pushover."I came here today specifically to see you and tell you in person that you're the unwanted one here. For him, you ate scraps, worked as a janitor and a street vendor, and sold off everything your mother left you.""But he gave me a 50-million-dollar ring, a life of luxury, and thoughtful pampering." She lifted her hand, her fingertips gently caressing the diamond ring she was wearing. She was visibly eager to show off. "Say, how cheap can you be exactly?"The word "cheap" was like a stake driven through my heart
