Chapter 2

Penulis: Washing Wheat
I looked at the numbers above Levi's head.

[260 days, 5 hours, 8 minutes.]

The time had shortened by another 29 days.

The car went quiet, the silence broken only by the rain and tires splashing through the puddles on the road.

There was a traffic light intersection up ahead. Turning left would take us to the fine dining restaurant that I'd booked two weeks in advance. Going straight would take us to Country Heights, where Belinda rented an apartment.

Levi stayed in the middle lane and didn't signal left.

I stared at the car dashboard and asked very quietly, "Aren't we supposed to be going to the restaurant?"

The rain nearly drowned out my voice, but Levi heard me. He hit the brakes at the red light and gave me an apologetic glance.

"The rain is too heavy, and the road leading into Country Heights is difficult to navigate on foot in this weather. It's not safe for her to go alone."

After a slight pause, he said, "We'll drop her off first. It's fine if we're late for the reservation."

I looked at him. "The reservation is only until 8:00 pm. And it's already 7:30 pm."

Levi frowned. "Anna, Linda is my employee. I can't just leave her stranded halfway home. It's just dinner. If we can't make it today, I'll make it up to you tomorrow."

He was always acting so self-righteously like this because he thought his intentions were kind and selfless. Therefore, anyone who got in the way of his kindness was being unreasonable.

Belinda poked her head out from the back and said, "Mr. Hammond, you can just drop me off at the subway station up ahead. I really don't want to get in the way of you celebrating your anniversary with Mrs. Hammond."

She sounded sincere, but there was no such subway station nearby at all.

As expected, Levi's frown deepened.

"What are you talking about? How are you supposed to take the subway in a torrential rain like this?"

The light turned green. Levi hit the gas, and the car zoomed forward at the intersection, going farther and farther away from the fine dining restaurant.

The countdown above his head jumped once again.

[201 days, 2 hours, 30 minutes.]

"Thank you so much, Mr. Hammond!"

By the time we dropped Belinda off, it was already 8:30 pm. The rain didn't let up. If anything, it got even heavier than before.

Levi pulled into the apartment garage and turned off the engine. Then, he turned toward me and reached over, trying to unbuckle my seatbelt.

"I'm sorry, Anna."

The back of his hand brushed against my collarbones, warm to the touch.

"I'll push back all of my meetings tomorrow and take you back to that fine dining restaurant, alright?"

I looked at his face that was very close to mine.

We'd been married seven years, and his face was still just as handsome, carrying the same familiar gentleness I'd always known. His eyes were still focused on me. However, the numbers above his head just wouldn't disappear.

[198 days, 11 hours, 45 minutes.]

I unbuckled my seatbelt myself and pushed the car door open.

"Forget it. I'm tired. I just want to go home and rest."

Neither of us said another word for the rest of the night.

After coming out of the shower, my head felt a little woozy. My throat also felt dry and scratchy. I guessed I caught a chill in the car earlier.

Levi walked out of the kitchen with a mug of warm water. When he saw my pale face, he immediately came up to me and pressed the back of his hand to my forehead.

"Why are you burning up?" He frowned. "Did you catch a cold in the car?"

He helped me onto the couch, treating me so gently as though I might break. Then, he went to the first-aid kit to get some Tylenol and NyQuil and brought out another mug of warm water from the kitchen.

"Take these first."

He put the pills on my palm and watched me swallow them. Then, he said, "I'll make you some hot tea with honey and lemon. Go and rest in the bedroom for now."

I leaned back against the pillow, listening to him slice lemons and stir honey in a mug in the kitchen.

Again, this was Levi Hammond.

He never yelled at me or laid a hand on me. He also never mistreated me financially. He would take care of me when I was sick and always bring me an umbrella on rainy days.

He was the perfect husband.

That was the reason why, after seven years, I had grown completely numb to this slow, stealthy, insidious happiness.

Then, the red numbers appeared over his head.

Levi walked into the bedroom with a mug of hot honey lemon tea and carefully set it on the nightstand.

I just watched Levi fall apart without feeling even a trace of satisfaction from the revenge. I just felt wary and tired."Stop making a scene and save yourself some dignity, Levi Hammond," I said, prying his fingers off my hand. Then, I turned and walked toward the exit, pausing for a bit without looking back."If you don't show up tomorrow, then you will never, ever see me again for the rest of your life."…The next morning was bright and sunny. The rainy season in Riverton seemed to have finally come to a stop after last night.Sunlight pierced through the clouds and shone on the steps in front of the courthouse. It was 8:50 am, and I saw a black car parked by the roadside as I stood on the steps.Levi stepped out of the car. He was emaciated, his cheekbones were slightly protruding, and the suit that used to fit him perfectly now looked somewhat loose and ill-fitting.He didn't get his driver to bring him here today and simply drove himself. He stopped in his tracks when

"Don't you think you're still just doing this out of self-pity?" I asked, watching the color drain from Levi's face."Go home, Levi. I'm not coming back to you no matter what you do."Then, I turned and walked back into the apartment building, slamming the door behind me, shutting out the wind, rain, and Levi's despairing gaze on me.An ambulance had to come and remove him from the premises the next morning.Levi got a high fever, which developed into acute pneumonia, and he remained unconscious in the hospital for nearly 24 hours. One of his best friends, Hugo Jensen, called me and immediately launched into a tirade."Are you really that fucking heartless, Anastasia Evans? He was willing to give up his life for you! And you're not even coming to visit him at the hospital?"He even kept calling out your name in his feverish daze! Are you that determined to drive him to his death? Is that what's going to make you happy?"I held the phone away from my ear and waited for him to fi

Levi tilted the umbrella toward me, exposing most of his body to the rain."Don't be mad, Anna," he said. "I never asked her to come. But she won't show up again."He looked at me again cautiously with a slightly hopeful expression. "Can we perhaps have dinner together tonight?"I looked at him, then at his shoulders that were getting soaked through."You know, Levi," I said. "The way you pushed Belinda just now was really ugly."Levi stiffened, gripping the umbrella handle until his knuckles turned white."Anna…" His voice was shaky, tinged with a fearful disbelief. "I was protecting you…""Protecting me?" I chuckled lightly and stepped out from under his umbrella. "You weren't protecting me. You were just covering up for your stupidity."You were the one who drew her here and gave her a false hope. And yet, you didn't hesitate to trample her into the mud just to prove your loyalty to me."The cruelty you showed her and me is essentially the same, Levi Hammond. You only ever

I didn't eat any of the food Levi made and threw them all away in the trash can downstairs.Melody watched me throw away all the food ruthlessly and couldn't help but click her tongue. "Wow. He's really leaning hard into the pitiful-husband-trying-to-win-his-wife-back act, isn't he?"I dusted my hands and said, "It's too little, too late. None of it means anything to me now."I thought that Levi would give up after a few days. After all, he'd been kind of spoiled since young, so he had an arrogant streak in him. However, he never gave up. In fact, he would sometimes follow me in his car when I got off work, staying a certain distance away. He didn't come up to disturb me, but he also didn't leave me alone. He was like an annoying fly that just couldn't be swatted away.On the 20th day of our cooling-off period, it poured heavily again in Riverton. I had only just gone down to the lobby when I saw a familiar figure standing outside the door.It was Belinda. She didn't have an umb

"Your stomach isn't too good, so you should be avoiding cold drinks," Levi said, trying to play on my emotions. However, I didn't touch the glass of milk at all."You can say whatever you want to say now."Levi looked at my cold, indifferent expression and clenched his hands tightly under the table."Belinda… I fired her." He inhaled deeply as though he was making a very huge and important decision. "I didn't make her pay for the losses she caused. I just told her to leave."He then looked at me expectantly, like a puppy wanting to be patted on its head. Then, he said, "Now, we don't have anything standing in our way anymore. Please just come back to me, alright?"I looked at him, then at the number above his head. It had jumped up to [412 days] after he fired Belinda. I found everything absolutely absurd. "Did you really think that we could go back to how things were as long as you got rid of her, Levi?"He froze."Isn't that it?" he asked. "Aren't you only mad at me because

"Let go," I said, looking at Levi coldly. His fingers stiffened. He'd never seen such a cold expression in my eyes before."Anna…"Just then, a crisp voice cut in from the side."Mr. Hammond?"I turned to look.Belinda was holding two cups of coffee in her hands, standing not too far away from us with a surprised look on her face. She first looked at him, then at me."Mrs. Hammond? What's going on?"She hurried over to us, her face sporting an innocent yet concerned look."Are you still mad at Mr. Hammond because of yesterday? I'm sorry, it was all my fault. Mr. Hammond is a good person. Please don't blame him for it."She then pressed one of the coffees into Levi's hand."Mr. Hammond, you barely slept a wink all night. Some coffee will help wake you up."Levi looked at the coffee in his hand, then at me. He instinctively released his grip on me."What are you doing here, Linda?"Belinda smiled easily and said, "I just happened to be in the area to deliver some documents
