Since my bone cancer is already terminal, my doctor asks me if I wish to receive an amputation. My breath is lodged in my throat. After hesitating for a few moments, I end up texting my husband, Jordan Parker. "If I undergo the amputation surgery, I'll get to live for another year. Do you want me to take up the surgery?" One minute before I'm scheduled to undergo the surgery, my phone finally buzzes. "Best wishes." It's the same response as the one I've been receiving for every message I've sent him over the past three years. Of course, Jordan has responded by transferring me money and a note that says "best wishes". I put down my phone quietly. Ever since I've borrowed 500 thousand dollars from him on our wedding night, Jordan has already determined that I'm a gold digger, just like what his friends have been saying about me. That's why Jordan transfers me money when I go through a miscarriage. When I beg him to attend my dad's funeral, he gives me money as well. Half a year ago, I'm diagnosed with bone cancer. The thought about having to live my life with tubes inserted into various parts of my body while lying on my sick bed and waiting for Death to grace me with its presence in the near future triggers a mental breakdown immediately. With tears rolling down my cheeks, I send 97 long audio messages to Jordan. In return, I've received 97 money transfers. Now, I'm about to get amputated just so I can extend my life span, and here Jordan is, fusing beads with his childhood sweetheart, Camille Laurent. As I stare at Camille's romantic social media post and the barrage of comments that wish her and Jordan well, I pluck out the needle with a bitter smile on my face. There is once when Jordan has told me in a tone filled with hatred and resentment that his biggest regret is his decision to call off his engagement with Camille over a gold digger like me. Well, I hope that this time, he won't have any regrets anymore.

Chapter 1

[Olivia's POV]

I pulled out the needle, bringing a drop of blood with it.

A nurse rushed over and stopped me, anxiously asking, "What are you doing?"

I smiled at her calmly. "Hello, please cancel the surgery for me."

A doctor was called over quickly. After a long silence, he prescribed me some painkillers and let me leave.

When I walked back to the ward, I heard the nurse complain, "Dr. Foster, this is a life! If she doesn't get the amputation, the cancer cells will spread through her whole body. She won't even survive a week."

A week. I could finally be free soon.

The doctor smiled wryly. "Did you know her dad died on this same bed years ago from the same illness?"

I stopped in my tracks.

He continued, "She's been coming for chemotherapy for a year. Every time, she comes alone. Other patients have family staying overnight with them, feeding them, wiping them down. But even when she curls up on the bed, shaking with pain, she rings for the nurse herself.

"Her husband never showed up once. One time, she called him in the middle of the night, and a woman answered the phone."

The doctor's voice was low. "Maybe it's just fate."

I clenched the prescription in my hand, my fingertips digging into my palm. He was right. Maybe this was fate.

After Dad was diagnosed with bone cancer, he held my hand. He was in so much pain, but he was still smiling. "Liv, don't be scared. I can handle it," he said.

But in the end, he took his last breath in my arms.

Back then, in a desperate attempt to save him, I asked Jordan Parker to lend me five hundred thousand dollars on our wedding night. To this day, I still remembered the shock and hurt in his eyes.

His voice was hoarse, and his eyes bloodshot as he asked, "Olivia, am I really just an ATM to you? My parents, my friends, and even Camille told me that you were a fraud, but I didn't believe any of them. When my dad broke three of my ribs, and I was taken to the hospital, I still insisted on marrying you!"

I never expected him to react this way. Tears instantly filled my eyes. "That's not it, Jordan. My dad—"

He cut me off, tore off his tie, and threw it on the floor. "We just got married today. Are you sure you want to show your true colors now?"

I said, "Jordan, I'll definitely find a way to pay you back! No, forget it. I won't borrow it anymore. I'll figure something out myself. Please don't be mad, okay?"

Jordan hurled his credit card at my face and forced a stiff smile. "Once you've gotten your hands on the money, there's no way you'll ever return it. Stop pretending. You really are exactly who they said you were."

After he finished speaking, he slammed the door and left.

That was how our wedding night ended. I waited in the living room until 4:00 am, and Camille Laurent showed up. Jordan was drunk out of his mind, half leaning against her. The hickeys on his neck looked vividly red under the entryway light.

Camille gave me an apologetic yet innocent smile. "Olivia, Jordan took his frustration out on me. You can rest easy now."
