Chapter 4

Penulis: Sweetie Moore
Regardless, I had to give Cyrus a proper send-off.

[Where are you?]

I sent Celia a message, but I received no reply.

I had no choice but to head home first.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw candlelight flickering in the dim living room.

Mason sat at one end of the dining table in my pajamas. His hair was still wet, and Celia enjoyed a candlelit dinner with him.

Celia was cheerfully placing a piece of steak onto his plate.

“Mason dear, come try this black pepper beef and tell me if it’s good.”

When she turned and saw me, she was startled. Her fork clattered to the floor.

Celia stood up in a panic.

“Didn’t you say you weren’t coming back?”

Realizing she had misspoken, she quickly explained herself, “Mason fell into the pool while he was protecting me. I didn’t want him to catch a cold, so I told him to go take a shower.

“He didn’t have any change of clothes with him, so I just lent him your pajamas. You don’t mind, do you?”

I had already given up on her. A piece of clothing meant nothing to me. I shook my head.

Celia thought I did not mind, so she happily tried to pull me over to eat together. “I made all this food myself. Here, have some.”

Back when we were at our poorest and most miserable state, she never once cooked.

She had learned to make a whole table of dishes just for Mason.

They had long since crossed the line between bodyguard and employer, but Celia was too stubborn to ever admit it.

I held out my hand and demanded, “Give me back my bank card.”

Celia was stunned.

“What do you need that for?”

I did not explain myself like I usually would. I just said impatiently, “None of your business. Just give it.”

Perhaps I sounded harsh, or perhaps she felt guilty. Either way, she did not argue.

She just nodded and went to the bedroom to get it.

While I stood there waiting, Mason came up to me.

Without Celia around, he dropped the act and asked tauntingly, “What is a cheap little card like that good for? Celia has already transferred all the money to me. I used it to buy a car.

“Oh, and it’s the BMW that killed your brother.”

I caught my breath and turned sharply to look at him.

I had wondered how such a coincidence could happen. So, it turned out that Mason had sent someone to kill Cyrus.

Rage surged through me. I landed punch after punch on him.

He did not fight back. He just looked at me with a provocative grin and silently took the hits.

Celia rushed out in a fluster and tried to stop me.

“Ethan, stop it right now! Are you trying to kill him?”

I was already blinded by fury. My ears were ringing, and I could not hear a thing.

When she saw Mason’s mouth bleed, she gritted her teeth, grabbed the wine bottle off the table, and smashed it against my head.

Red wine mixed with blood streamed down my face.

Only then did I stop.

Celia hastily helped Mason up. She touched his bruised and swollen face as she said worriedly, “Are you crazy? Why don’t you fight back or at least get out of the way when he hits you?”

Mason staggered to his feet, dragged himself in front of me, straightened up, and said stubbornly, “Mr. Grant is my boss. Whatever he does to me, I’ll take it.

“Mr. Grant, if you’re upset, you can take it out on me.

“Go ahead, keep hitting me if you want. Just don’t fire me. All I care about is continuing to work for Celia.”

Celia hesitated, as if she wanted to say something more. In the end, she simply placed a document in front of me. “Mason explained that he did not mean for any of this to happen. I’ve helped you draft a letter of leniency for the judge. Could you sign it so he can receive a lighter sentence? Don’t worry, I know you’ve been wronged. Just name your terms.”So, she came for Mason after all. That was very generous of her.She had withheld my money and used it to buy Mason a car. In the end, Cyrus died under that very car I had saved so hard to afford. How utterly ironic.Celia thought I was considering it, so she quickly pulled out a pen.I coldly slapped her pen away.“I’m not going to sign that, Celia. I want a divorce.”“What? You want to divorce me? Why?”Celia did not bother with the pen that had fallen in the car. She turned and stared at me in shock. “You’re just saying that out of anger, right?“Ethan, I know Cyrus is gone, and you’re heartbroken. He was such a swee

“Celia, I don’t care if other people doubt me. But you can’t.“I’ve never asked you for anything. Please, help me...”Celia was moved, but she still shook her head. “The police already have all the evidence. There’s nothing more I can do for you.”Mason deeply regretted his action. If he had known this would happen, he should never have provoked me in the first place. What he did not know was that every deed left a footprint. My report to the police only accelerated the investigation.Even without the evidence I provided, the police would have found Mason eventually. He had committed a crime, and there was no escaping the law.Mason rolled up his sleeve and revealed the scar on his arm. “Celia, can you help me one last time, for the sake of the fact that I once saved you?“Just this once. After that, you won’t owe me a thing.”Celia stared at the scar, and she lowered her gaze for a moment. “What do you want me to do?”A flash of joy crossed Mason’s face.“I can’t get out

At the time of Cyrus’ death, the building across the street was broadcasting live about her wedding to Mason. It made her realize that Cyrus had been in an accident on the very day of her wedding. That brought back the memory of my phone call begging for surgery money. At that time, she had instinctively assumed I was just causing trouble. After all, she not only did not inform me about her wedding to Mason in advance, but had also broadcast it live across the city.If I saw it, I would have definitely objected and tried to stop it.So, she thought that I had not really been calling about the money. I just wanted her to come running to me so I could stop the wedding.Cyrus was the only family I had left. She never could have believed I would jinx my own brother just to spoil her ceremony.Back then, she had even felt somewhat disappointed in me. She thought I had lost myself and was not the same boy she once knew.In the end, she finally realized she had misjudged me completel

She had originally wanted to text me about it. But when she saw the single gray check mark, she had no choice but to ask around.“I’ve been so swamped with work lately that I completely lost track of Cyrus. Do you know what grade Cyrus is? Is he in junior year?”She sighed as she realized she had neglected me for too long.Recalling the good times we once shared, she felt a twinge of regret. She ordered an expensive gift and planned to apologize to me when we met. In her mind, I loved her so much. I would surely forgive her, and we would get back together. She had no choice but to approach a random student to ask about Cyrus.Several students recognized the name when she said Cyrus. He had attended both middle school and high school at that school. Soon, a former classmate recognized Celia.“Are you Cyrus’ sister-in-law?”Celia was overjoyed. As long as someone recognized her, that was good. She quickly responded, “Yes, I am. Can you tell me which class Cyrus is in now? I n

Celia then realized she was no longer able to see my status. Her knuckles turned white from gripping her phone too hard. She asked Mason furiously, “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation? What is going on?”Mason had not expected me to actually call the police. His face turned pale as he explained, “I don’t know. I was busy with the wedding that day. I don’t know anything.”The police officers had not mentioned the time of Cyrus’ death, yet he had blurted it out immediately. That clearly showed he had something to do with it.Celia raised an eyebrow and questioned him, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything? Mason, you know what happens when someone lies to me, don’t you?”He smiled bitterly and said, “Celia, if you don’t trust me, then just fire me.“If I’d known this would happen, you never should have helped me make my dream come true. It got you and your husband fighting. Now, on top of everything, we’re caught up in this whole disaster.“At the end of the day, it’s all m

Celia’s eyes welled up with tears. She threw the bank card at me as she said furiously, “So, that’s what it was. I wondered why he had been randomly slapping himself out of nowhere. It turns out you’ve been bullying him behind my back this whole time.”I did not bother to explain or argue with her. I just picked up the bank card from the floor and walked away without looking back.Celia raised an eyebrow and wanted to chase after me. Just then, Mason coughed up blood and acted tough, saying, “Celia, I’m just a lowly bodyguard. Don’t let me come between you and your husband. You should just fire me.”Celia’s eyes welled up. She gave him a soft, exasperated punch on his shoulder.“Don’t be ridiculous. You saved my life. If I fired you now, everyone would call me heartless and ungrateful.“Don’t overthink it. Let me get you patched up first.“Don’t worry about Ethan. He’s easy to smooth things over with.”I did not stay to listen to the rest. Instead, I went to the bank and c
