Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
My fingers tightened around my phone as my hand slowly lowered. I stared at the contact name, which was “Business Partner,” and could not help but laugh.

Wendy finally finished her work. She poured me a glass of red wine like she was the perfect wife.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, honey!”

Her eyes kept drifting toward her phone. In the end, she could not hold back. She picked it up and checked it.

I kept my expression blank as I picked at the food on the table. I looked at the ring on her finger and found the whole situation painfully ironic.

Suddenly, she stood up. She sounded anxious.

“Honey, something happened at the lab. I might need to go there and take a look.

“You eat first. Don’t wait for me.”

She did not wait for my response. She bent down, kissed my cheek, and hurried out.

I watched her leave and let out a mocking laugh. She had become a professional actress just so she could rush off to sleep with another man.

I pulled out a disinfecting wipe and scrubbed my cheek. That was when Xavier’s message came in.

[Those two are disgusting. Yale, you can get ready to file a lawsuit. Just wait until I find more evidence. I’ll make sure those two are completely ruined!]

He sent me their travel records from the past three months, their hotel records, and Felix’s social media account.

Felix had only created his Instagram account a little over three months ago. His username was “Ms. L’s Little Puppy.”

His first post was uploaded on May 20. It was a set of breathtaking wedding photos.

I looked at the caption. [Ms. L, please take care of me for the rest of my life.]

There were only a few comments. Someone asked why the bride’s face had been blurred.

Felix replied that his wife was a very private person and did not like showing her face.

Her face was covered in the photos, but I still recognized her from her figure alone. It was Wendy.

All this time, I had been begging her to take some new wedding photos with me. It turned out that she had already taken them with someone else.

I swallowed the disgust rising within me and opened the posts one by one.

The posts that came after that were all about their honeymoon.

The trip had taken place in mid-June. The destination was Pahiti. It was the same place I had researched and planned to visit with Wendy.

They went to every attraction I had marked down in my itinerary. They tried surfing, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. They were the activities I had planned to do with her.

In the photos, Felix wore beach shorts and smiled brightly.

[Thank you, Ms. L, for planning this entire honeymoon trip for me. I’m so happy!]

Back then, Wendy told me she was attending a seminar with a business partner.

I sneered. So, this was the “business partner” she referred to.

I was stunned by how shameless they were. At that moment, Felix uploaded another post.

The photo showed two hands wearing diamond rings. They were entwined.

[Of all days, we received our custom-made wedding rings on Valentine’s Day! Ms. L, I guess we really are meant to be together.]

I had already prepared myself for the worst. Even so, each post felt like a sharp knife cutting into my chest. Every word left another wound that hurt.

Someone commented under the post.

[You’re so lucky. Let me borrow some of your luck! I hope I can meet my true love someday too.]

Felix replied right away.

[You will. Let me tell you a secret. My wife brings me luck! She has helped me a lot with my Firefly Project. It’s almost finished and will be announced soon. Maybe I’ll become someone the whole world knows then.]

The moment I saw that reply, my body went cold.

Other people might not know what the “Firefly Project” was, but I knew better than anyone.

It was the project I had spent ten years developing. It was my research into a treatment for Alzheimer’s.

From the day I became a doctor, I dreamed of finding a way to overcome this disease. I was only one step away.

I drove straight to my research lab. My fingers trembled as I typed in my wedding date to unlock my computer.

Just as I expected, the file for the “Firefly Project” showed that someone had downloaded it.

My head spun, and I collapsed into the chair.

Wendy was a leading expert in life sciences. In the past, I had asked her more than once to work with me so we could find a breakthrough for this disease together.

To convince her, I told her about the Firefly Project and showed her the clinical data I had collected.

After hearing everything, she rejected me coldly. She said, “You’re living in a fantasy. Experts around the world have spent decades trying to solve this problem but have failed. What makes you think you can do it?”

She looked down on my research but had stolen it for her lover to build his career.

I could not hold it in anymore. I rushed into the bathroom and threw up until I had nothing left.

Then, I sent a message to my colleague.

[Remember the life sciences conference you told me about? Sign me up. I’ve decided to attend.]

The next day, Wendy was waiting for me downstairs when I returned from shopping with Xavier. Her expression was just as sincere as it had been years ago when she had proposed to me.Back then, a few words from her were enough to touch my heart. This time, when I saw her, all I felt was disgust.“Yale, come home with me.”I moved away from her.“I know you’re angry. I only wanted Felix to use your research data as a reference. I never expected him to take all of it.”I sneered and said nothing. She watched my face carefully before continuing, “I already made him give up on this project. He’s not my student anymore.“Yale, I was wrong. I lost my way for a moment. Can we start over?”Xavier impatiently pushed her away. “Do you really think this is something you can fix by saying a few words?”Wendy quickly said, “The life sciences conference is going to be held again. This time, you can personally present your research results. What do you think?”When I heard that, Xavier and

“Damn it!”Xavier threw the fried chicken down.“Does he really think this is the only evidence you have?”I thought about it for a moment. Then, I casually sent Felix the screenshot of the photo he had sent Wendy. The one where he showed off his abs. I also sent the screenshot of the message that came with it.Sure enough, his reply came soon.[Yale, let’s meet. I hope you’ll give me a chance to explain.]I wanted to hear what kind of explanation he would come up with.I arranged to meet Felix at my friend’s coffee shop. To make sure we could talk without interruptions, my friend cleared the entire coffee shop for us.Felix looked exhausted. He was unshaven, and he looked much more worn out than before. He no longer looked like the bright and confident young man I had seen on Valentine’s Day.The moment he saw me, he dropped to his knees.“Yale, please don’t release that photo.“You know how this industry works. Once a bad rumor gets out, people will start banning you. It’l

“Yale, Wendy committed bigamy, secretly stole your research, and she’s now suspected of selling patients’ medical information overseas. That’s enough to put her in prison for a long time!”“Don’t rush.”I looked at all the evidence Xavier had gathered. A bone-chilling numbness spread through me.We had been together for ten years and married for seven. I never imagined that the woman who had always seemed so elegant and untouchable would become someone so completely different in the end.“Evidence needs to be released little by little. Her reputation needs to be destroyed step by step.“The academic community wants to protect her, doesn’t it? I want to see how they plan to protect her this time.”I logged into my social media account. It had always been a place where I shared moments from my life and updates about my work. The comment sections under my latest posts were filled with insults.[Crazy guy, hurry and divorce Professor Lawson. Wendy and Felix’s fans gathered outside the hospital where I worked. They held up banners and shouted, “Boycott unethical doctors! Fire the mentally unstable doctor!”The hospital director called me into his office. He looked troubled.“Dr. Xenford, I trust your professionalism and your character. But this protest is seriously damaging the hospital’s reputation.”I requested a leave of absence so I could focus on dealing with everything. I promised the director over and over that I would be back soon. After all, so many patients were still waiting for me.After the conference, I had not gone back to the home I shared with Wendy. Instead, I moved in with Xavier. She sent me messages and said she wanted to talk. I ignored every one of them. She refused to give up and kept calling me. I blocked her number. One day, Xavier came home furious. He held his laptop in front of me.“Look what I found!”The photos left me speechless.Wendy and Felix had actually held a wedding in Mall

After I found out that the Firefly Project file had been downloaded, I immediately requested the surveillance footage from my research lab.Just as I expected, the footage showed Wendy walking into my lab while the medical staff watched. The staff told me that Wendy had claimed I had sent her to get something from my office. She was my wife, and she was also a respected authority in the academic world. They had no reason to doubt her. They assumed I knew about it.The moment Wendy entered my lab, she dropped the image of the untouchable academic expert she always maintained and became sneaky. She hurriedly opened my computer and copied the files onto a USB drive. While she did that, she secretly searched through my drawers. The footage of Wendy sneaking around like a thief shocked everyone at the conference.“Yale, you’ve lost your mind!”She rushed over and pulled out the power cable. The large screen went black instantly. The lights in the venue went out at the same time.

The life sciences conference was attended by leading experts from academia and the medical field, along with journalists. On stage, Wendy stood in a snappy suit and announced that the research project led by her student had achieved a breakthrough. She smiled proudly as she read Felix’s name aloud.I sat in the corner and watched Felix walk onto the stage with confidence. He placed a hand over his chest, and his eyes were filled with tears.“I’m so excited to share the results. Our team has finally achieved a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s disease research. We have solved a problem that the medical community around the world has been unable to solve for years.”The moment he finished speaking, the entire venue erupted. Reporters’ cameras flashed nonstop as they took photos of Felix.A reporter asked, “Mr. Lawrence, there are many areas within life sciences that can be studied. What made you choose Alzheimer’s disease?”Felix answered as if he had prepared the speech beforehand. Hi
