Chapter 2

Author: Echo
My face is a calm mask as I watch Marcello’s lips tremble.

“Fine. I’m leaving.”

No screaming fit. No tears of betrayal.

I turn and walk away. Behind me, a wine glass shatters against the marble floor.

“Stop!” Marcello’s voice is tight with a rage he can’t contain. “You think the Valence family is some place you can just walk in and out of?”

I don’t break my stride.

My indifference seems to push him over the edge. His roar echoes through the vast hall. “Lilian, if you dare walk out that door, I’ll have Camilla in our bed tonight! In the Don’s wife’s room. I see you don’t need it anymore!”

I falter for a split second.

I decorated that room myself when we first got married. The oil painting on the wall, the color of the curtains, even the warm lamp on the nightstand—I chose every single piece.

I remember our first night as husband and wife. He held me, his body tangled with mine, kissing every inch of my skin. Only then could I physically feel that he cared.

Afterward, I asked him if he liked what I’d done with the room.

He’d scoffed. “Your taste is terrible.”

But in his head, he’d said: Lilian, I love it here. It smells like you. You’re the only woman who will ever be in this room. No one can ever take you away.

But now, to force me to submit, to test my limits, he’s going to let another woman move right in.

A sharp pain, like a needle, stabs my heart.

Don’t go! Lilian, please, turn around! I’m just saying it to make you stay. I’d never touch her!

Just give in. Just say you’re jealous. Just come and take my hand, and I’ll kick her out right now! Please, look at me!

Marcello’s thoughts are like the screams of a cornered animal, begging in my mind.

“Fine by me,” I say without turning back, my voice cutting through the silence. “The mattress is on the softer side. I hope Miss Camilla finds it comfortable.”

“Oh, thank you, Don!” Camilla’s surprised, syrupy voice chirps from behind me.

I close my eyes, shutting out the noise, shutting out Marcello’s desperate thoughts, and push open the heavy doors.

The cold of the New York winter night wraps around me.

I pull out my phone and dial the hospital director.

“Dean Smith, it’s Lilian.” My voice is firm. “About the offer to transfer to the Royal Hospital in London for a visiting position… I’ve made my decision.”

“I accept.”

Dean Smith sighs in relief on the other end. “That’s wonderful, Lilian. Don’t worry, I guarantee you’ll get the best treatment there!”

I’d planned to talk to Marcello about this calmly after the banquet. I wanted to hear his real thoughts, just once, not filtered through a layer of venom. I wanted to tell him it was a huge career opportunity, but that I’d be back soon.

Now, it seems, there’s no point.

After hanging up, I book a flight to London for tomorrow night.

“That’s impossible…” Like a cornered animal, he grabs the director by the collar. “How could Lilian agree to go to Europe? She swore she’d stay with me forever! How dare she go to London!”“She must have put you up to this! Tell her to get her ass out here and face me!”The director, terrified by Marcello’s bloodshot eyes, stammers, “Don… I’m not lying! I walk to the entryway to put on my shoes.Marcello stiffens and rushes to block the door. “Where are you going?”The divorce talk, the packed bags—it’s left him paranoid.Seeing the defensive look in his eyes, I don’t want a repeat of last night. I make up an excuse.“To the hospital. There’s a medical conference today, I have to be there.”“Is that so?” Marcello’s brow slowly unfurrows. “I’ll drive you.”I don’t refuse. I can just grab a cab to the airport from the hospital.Once we’re in the car, Marcello starts testing the waters about Camilla.“Do you hate her?”Camilla appeared by his side a year ago. I’ve complained about her countless times. He always told me not to be so petty. I have no idea what answer he’s looking for now.I turn to look out the window.“I wouldn’t say I hate her. In fact, I’m kind of grateful to her now.”Marcello’s expression shifts. He turns to me, his voice tense. “Grateful for what?”I rub my temples. “Grateful that she’s there to be your date. With he

Marcello lunges at me, his voice shaking uncontrollably. “Blood… Where did that blood come from?”“It’s from when you pushed me yesterday.” I shove his hands away, a bitter smile on my face. “I begged you for help in the cellar. You were sure I was lying.”Marcello’s face turns white. “I… I didn’t know… I thought…”“You thought I was tricking you?” I laugh at myself.Six years of marriage. He could believe every word Camilla said without a second thought, but with me, he was always filled with suspicion.Sometimes I wonder. Did he care about me, or did he just hate me? My unnatural calm is throwing him off balance. He’s red-eyed. “Let’s have the private doctor take a look first.”“Not necessary.” I yank my arm free. “Don’t worry, it’s just my period. “Open the door! Please, open the door!”I drag my weak body to the iron door and beat on it with all my strength. The pain has me drenched in a cold sweat.“Marcello! I’m bleeding! Help me…” I cry out, my voice hoarse. “I need a doctor!”I hear frantic footsteps outside the door. Then, Marcello’s voice, cold as ice. “Lilian, are you done with your games?”“You, a surgeon, pulling a stunt like faking an illness? You’d stoop to lying like this just to get out of being punished?”“I’m not faking! My stomach really hurts!” I sob, my nails scratching bloody lines on the iron door. “Please, take me to the hospital…”Outside, Camilla’s sweet voice chimes in. “Don, the Madam is probably just acting to cover up for pushing me. She was pretty strong when she shoved me, after all.”She pauses, her tone dripping with malicious insinuation. “And she keeps screaming about going to the hospital… you don’t think she’s trying to escape, do you? She did have her bags packed.”Escape. The word hits Marce
