THALIA

I got home a little after six with my entire body aching from standing for hours in heels while pretending I wasn’t exhausted.

The event had drained me completely, but at least it had been worth it. The students had responded so well to my speech that even now I could still hear the applause ringing in my ears.

All I wanted was a hot shower, silence, and maybe an entire tub of ice cream afterward as a reward for surviving the day.

I kicked my heels off near the couch, walked straight to

  • I LEFT WHEN HIS EX CAME BACK WITH HIS SON   107

BRANDONFor months I’d wanted peace inside this house, but now that I finally had it, it felt empty instead.I pulled a clean shirt from the wardrobe and had just finished buttoning it when my phone vibrated on the dresser.I barely looked at it.It was probably another email from the office or an update from the legal team. The phone vibrated again.I sighed, picked it up, and glanced at the screen.Credit Alert.I frowned.Credit? My thumb tapped the notification, and the banking app opened automatically. The amount appeared almost immediately.$190,000,000.00For a moment, I simply stared at the screen. Then my eyes moved to the sender’s name.Thalia Langford. My stomach tightened.Below the transaction was a short payment description.I’ve paid my dues. Now do yours. Sign the divorce papers.I read it once. Then again. And again. The words didn’t change. My grip tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white.“No…”The whisper escaped before I even realized I’d spoken.

THALIAOlivia hadn’t given me the chance to sit alone with depressing thoughts. She’d stayed beside my bed, talking whenever she thought the silence was becoming too loud. Sometimes she complained about work.I hadn’t realized how badly I needed someone who wasn’t asking me questions or trying to convince me I was wrong.A few minutes earlier, her phone had started vibrating across the bedside table. She glanced at the screen, frowned apologetically, and stood up. “I need to take this outside. It’ll only be a minute, okay?”I smiled at her.“I’m not going anywhere.”She pointed toward me as though giving me a warning.“You’d better not.”I laughed softly, and she disappeared into the hallway with the phone pressed to her ear.The room grew quiet again, but it didn’t feel empty. Her handbag was still draped over the chair beside my bed, and the cup of coffee she’d ordered nearly an hour ago sat untouched on the table with a thin film floating across the top. She’d been so focused on ke

THALIAA second later, the door opened slowly, and Olivia stepped inside with a small smile already forming on her face.“Hey girlie—”She stopped mid-sentence.Her eyes moved from me to Brandon, then back again. Whatever she saw on my face made her smile disappear instantly.“What the hell are you doing here?”Brandon looked surprised at the harshness in her voice. “Excuse me?”“I asked what you’re doing here or are you suddenly to deaf to respond?”Brandon didn’t answer.“I’ve been coming here every single day,” Olivia continued, her voice growing firmer. “Every single day I’ve asked to see her, and every single day I was told only her spouse could come in. So imagine my surprise when I finally get through that door and find you upsetting her less than an hour after she woke up.”“I wasn’t trying to upset her.”“I honestly don’t care what you were trying to do.”The room fell quiet again.Brandon looked at me as though hoping I’d say something, but I stayed exactly where I was. I di

THALIAI stared at him in disbelief.“That’s impossible.”“They identified the driver who hit your car, and according to the investigation, he’d been drinking before he got behind the wheel. They’ve already questioned him, and he’s currently in police custody.”I kept staring at him, certain I’d heard him wrong.“No.”“Thalia…”“No. I know Clara’s car.”His voice remained calm despite the anger rising inside me.“You were seriously injured… you could have been hallucinating.”“I KNOW WHAT I SAW.”The words echoed around the room before silence settled over us again. My breathing became uneven, but I didn’t care.“I saw her car, Brandon. She turned into my lane and drove straight at me. She didn’t lose control, she didn’t try to avoid me, and she never even attempted to brake.”He rubbed a tired hand across his face before speaking again.“That’s not what the investigation is showing.”I laughed. Not because anything was funny, but because I suddenly realized nothing had changed.“So t

THALIAThe first thing I heard was the steady beeping somewhere beside me.It came at the same pace every few seconds, followed by the faint hum of machines and quiet voices drifting through the room. I tried opening my eyes, but everything stayed blurry for a moment before the white ceiling slowly came into focus.I shifted slightly, hoping to roll onto my side, but a sharp pain shot through my arm where the IV was taped in place. A groan escaped my lips before I could stop it, and the movement tugged at something beneath the blanket, forcing me to stay still."Easy."That voice was familiar.I blinked several times until the figure beside the bed became clear.Brandon.He was already leaning forward, the chair scraping softly against the floor as he stood. His tie was gone, the top buttons of his shirt were undone, and dark stubble covered his jaw like he hadn't gone anywhere near a razor. His eyes were fixed on me, and they looked exhausted."You're awake."He reached for the te

BRANDONThe call from the chief of police came just as I finished signing the last document on my desk. I set my pen aside, answered without looking at the screen, and leaned back in my chair, expecting another routine update.“Mr. Langford,” the chief said, “I wanted you to hear this directly from me. We’ve taken everyone into custody.”I sat up immediately.“The protesters?”“Every one of them. The people involved in the attack outside Mrs. Langford’s apartment have been arrested, and Clara’s friends are also in custody. They’ve already started cooperating with our investigation.”A small breath escaped me.“Good.”“We moved quickly before anyone could disappear.”“You did exactly what needed to be done,” I said as I closed the file on my desk. “People need to understand there are consequences for coming after my family.”“They’re learning that now.”“I appreciate your work, Chief.”“We’ll stay in touch as—”My office door burst open. The loud bang echoed through the room, cutting t

THALIAI didn’t fully wake up when I got out of bed. My body moved before my mind did, still caught in sleep as I walked down the hallway toward the bathroom. The apartment was too quiet, and I just wanted to have a nice shower and be on my phone the whole day.The fog cleared from my eyes the minu

THALIAI stood there staring through the peephole for several seconds, hoping that if I waited long enough Brandon would somehow disappear. The doorbell rang again. Then came a heavy knock. Then another.I groaned and dragged a hand down my face."What is wrong with this man?" I muttered. The knock

THALIAThe awkwardness after Brandon and Clara left didn’t disappear immediately. For the next few minutes, the table kept trying too hard to get back into the mood. Conversations overlapped louder than before, people laughed a little too quickly at jokes that weren’t that funny.Olivia, thankfull

THALIAI looked away first because I didn’t want to stay looking. I had no interest in whatever reason brought them here, and pretending otherwise felt easier than acknowledging it.I still felt it anyway.Clara’s gaze. When I turned slightly, she was already watching the table. Her eyes moved acro
