Juliet

My hand clenched hard around the device. I scrolled down, vision blurring as I read the chats between Declan and ‘Parker’.

Heat burned through my body, rising from my chest until I started to shake. I could barely think.

I slowly turned to a peacefully sleeping Declan. And then I saw red.

The next second, I was over him, hitting every part of his body my fists could find.

“Declan you disgusting asshole! How dare you?!”

“What the fuck!” He sprang up.

I picked up anything within my reach. Luckily for him, it was a pillow. I continued to hit him, hot tears falling freely as I yelled.

“Juliet! What's wrong with you?!” He held me back, pushing me away.

My vision and head cleared a little. I looked at him, chest heaving.

Breathing to calm myself, I picked up the phone.

“What is this?” I asked, pointing the screen at him.

The angry and confused expression on his face fell for a moment, and then it was replaced by annoyance.

“What were you doing with my phone?” He asked, snatching it from me.

My eyes widened.

“Oh!” I laughed, as a fresh wave of anger burned through me. “Is that the question we're asking right now? Huh?!”

“Juliet…”

“I was at home. Preparing everything, getting ready. Trying to make your ungrateful ass happy! But you were out there fucking another woman!”

Declan’s jaws clenched. He looked away from me.

Of course. He had nothing to say.

“You promised you wouldn't do it again and I stupidly believed you! I’ve been trying my best to make you happy. To make this marriage work! What else do you want me to do!” My voice turned raspy as I cried out.

“Really Juliet? You've been trying your best?” He asked accusingly.

I recoiled.

“What exactly do you classify as best? Is it how you refused to lose weight? Or how you would just lie on the bed and barely pretend to enjoy the sex?!”

My mouth parted in shock.

“Well I’m just a man and I have needs, okay?!” He spat.

“Complain”, I said quietly. “All you do is fucking complain!”

“You complain about my body. You don't appreciate whatever I effort I make to please you”, I said, heart pounding as I remembered how he dismissed all my efforts.

“And you dare to rant about sex when sex with you has been terrible!” I yelled.

Declan's expression morphed into fury. “What did you just say?”

Usually I would recoil. But I was too far gone to care.

“It's so easy for you to put all the blame on me. You're not the only one who is unsatisfied, I have needs too Declan!”

The muscles on his neck and shoulders stretched taut.

“Maybe I should follow your footsteps and find someone whom I don't have to fake an orgasm with!”

The next moment, my body swerved to the side. I grabbed the bed for support, vision blurring.

I gasped as the side of my temple and cheek throbbed with pain. I turned slowly to Declan, the realisation of what he just did dawning on me.

Alarm bells rang in my head at the furious expression on his face.

“So you want to cheat on me, huh?” Declan asked lowly, crowding my space.

I tried to move, but there was nowhere to hide. My body shook.

I whimpered when he grabbed my chin in a crushing grip.

“Declan…”

“How dare you even contemplate it?” He asked, reddened eyes staring into mine.

“So you're the only one who can cheat?” I asked, hurt and anger taking over my fear once more.

His grip tightened, nose flaring.

“Listen to me, Juliet. If you ever dare to offer what is mine to another man…” he paused.

I braced myself for his threat.

“I will fucking ruin you”, he added.

Declan was completely unrecognisable. At that moment, I could not see the man I had fallen in love with. The man I had made vows with.

Like a movie, every terrible thing he had done, the hurtful words he had said played through my head.

And then him hitting me.

My body weakened as I turned slack underneath him. All I could do was let the tears fall.

“Fuck you Declan”, I said lowly.

Declan took in a sharp breath. And then he suddenly let me go.

Unable to hold myself up, I dropped down, grabbing the headboard for support. I heard him climb off the bed, footsteps loud as he stormed away.

The door slammed shut and everything inside me broke.

I began to cry out, as I thought back to the moment I first met Declan. I was in my second year at the University, attending a party with my parents.

I had been feeling nervous and out of place, and he had approached me, grounded and confident. I remembered him making me feel better and at ease.

Things took off so fast and before I knew it, I was madly in love. Just after my graduation, he proposed and we got married.

As I kept thinking of me and Declan, I realised there was no specific moment where things switched or changed.

Declan had always been a controlling partner who complained a lot. It had started from small, forgivable things. And I continued to give in.

Maybe it was my fault it got to this point.

I held on to myself as I continued to cry until my tears dried up.

At some point, bone deep exhaustion settled within me. Yet my eyes remained open all night.

Next morning …

I pulled the door of the bedroom open, to meet Mrs. Turner waiting outside. Her eyes widened when she saw me.

“What?” I asked dully.

“Mrs. Cooper is downstairs. She arrived thirty minutes ago”, she said, schooling her expression.

My dull headache intensified at the thought of dealing with Declan's mother. I was in no mood to tolerate her shit. In fact, I was in no mood for anything.

I felt so numb yet exhausted.

“Entertain her”. I shut the door on her face.

I stopped walking when I noticed my reflection on the mirror.

My head was a mess of tangled curly hair. My eyes were swollen, with a huge bruise at the side of my eye. No wonder it kept aching.

I kept looking at my reflection unable to reconcile the miserable woman in front of me with the person I was once. Sure, I had always been conscious of myself and reserved, but even with all my doubts, I used to be happy.

I couldn't remember the last time I smiled genuinely.

After dragging myself through a shower and putting on whatever I could lay my hands on, I pulled myself downstairs.

“And she finally decides to grace me with her presence”.

I couldn't be bothered at her condensing voice.

“What happened to you?” She asked, staring at me with a frown.

Looking at her, I could not help but think about how alike she and Declan looked. Same blue eyes, and features. It was irritating.

“Your son”, I answered, turning away from her.

She gasped behind me. “You mean Declan hit you?”

I ignored her, making my way to the kitchen.

“But why?” She sounded confused. “I’m sure you provoked him. Declan will never raise his hand without a reason”.

I paused.

The anger and frustration that had settled before, returned with full force.

I slowly turned to my mother in law.

  • I Left, And They Declared War   TWELVE

JulietThe next morning, I stirred awake, tired and sore all over. I opened my eyes to the empty space beside me. It took a moment for my fuzzy brain to fully remember what happened the night before. My cheeks warmed, when I remembered Noah going down on me after the second round. And then I dragged my spent body through another shower, instantly falling asleep. I sat up, wincing at the soreness between my legs. It felt quiet, like there was no one else around. My brows lifted in surprise when I noticed my clothes neatly folded on the couch. Pushing myself off the bed, I walked towards it. A note was left on top of it, in a messy scrawl, a surprise for someone so organised. ‘I had to leave for work and I didn't want to disturb your sleep. You can call hotel services if you need anything’, the note read. A huge part of me was glad that Noah had left before I woke up. It would have been very awkward. What was I supposed to say to a one night stand the next morning? I didn't know,

Juliet“I want you to fuck me”. Noah bit his lip, a cocky smile on his face as he drew away from me. He held my gaze for a moment, and I knew I would pay any amount to know what was going through his mind. Did he think I was pathetic? Had I sold myself cheap? When he got off the couch, leaving me lying, a sense of awareness took hold of me. My cheeks and neck felt warm, as I pulled down the shirt I wore. I tried to fix my bra, but then he said, “Come on”, with his hand stretched towards me. Noah seemed rather calm and unaffected compared to earlier. If it wasn't for the unmissable tent at the crotch of his sweatpants, I would have thought everything was one sided. He tilted his head at me in question. I placed my hand on his. He grabbed it, easily helping me off the couch. “What's wrong?” He asked, his eyes searching my face. “Nothing”, I said quietly, shaking my head. Without a word, I let Noah lead me to the bedroom. When he shut the door behind him, the rational part of

Juliet Heat rose beneath my skin, as my lips brushed against Noah's. It was quick, barely a kiss. I retreated, heart pounding against my chest. I stared at Noah's frozen expression, cheeks and neck burning. What did I just do? I thought. “I’m sorry”, I said. “I shouldn't have done that”, I licked my lips as I looked away. Maybe I misread things. How stupid could I be to think this perfect stranger wanted me? I tried to get up, unable to look at him. But then held me back. I turned to Noah with a questioning look. The expression on his face was intense, jaws ticking. “What are you apologizing for?” He asked, his voice deeper. “Kissing you?” I asked, staring at him in confusion. Was he angry? Irritated? “That was barely a kiss.” “What?” “Do it again”, his eyes drifted lower to my lips. I let out a shaky breath. What the hell was I doing? And why was I leaning forward again? He swallowed when I closed the space between us. I breathed in his scent, masculine and he

Juliet I swore internally, wrapping my arms around myself. But it wasn't exactly helping things. Even though he was no longer looking, my cheeks heated up in embarrassment. Noah suddenly took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around me. “It’s a bit wet and cold but it should do”, he said awkwardly. A bit was an understatement, but “Thanks”. “Let's go get you a jacket before you catch a cold”, he said. I nodded, already feeling chills over my skin. A man dressed in a crisp suit and tie, holding a pad approached us. “Hello, ma’am, sir, apologies for the inconvenience”, he said, looking at the both of us. They were people dressed the same way attending to other guests too. “Do you know where we can get a jacket for her? Or anything?” Noah asked. The man’s expression turned apologetic. “I’m sorry, but it's very late and all our boutiques are closed. If you don't mind, we can send a robe and some towels up to your room?” He asked, turning to me. “I’m not a guest”, I said quie

Juliet Oh God, he's good looking. I thought with a bit of panic. As if he wasn't already stunning enough, he smiled. “Sorry I disturbed you. All the other tables are occupied. Mind if I join you?” Dimples. “Sure!” I agreed, immediately regretting it. “Thanks”, he said, taking a seat in front of me. Having been married to a man like Declan, I had grown to be able to socialise with strangers. But those were under specific conditions and I was always mentally prepared. There was no way I could have a normal conversation with a man who came from nowhere and not be awkward. In a bid to avoid him, I turned back to admiring the view while sipping my drink. “Beautiful view isn't it?” I simply hummed an agreement. “Everything about this city screams extravagance”, he said. I looked at him. There must be a ‘why do you think so’ on my face, because he continued. “Just look at the buildings from this view. Exaggerated structure. It looks like some sort of a competition i

Juliet Just as I was about to give up and go back, the door pulled open, revealing Grace in her nightwear. She frowned at me in concern. “Are you okay?” She asked. “I’m good. I just… couldn't sleep”. After the message I received, I had tossed and turned, unable to think of anything else but Declan. And he was the last person I wanted to occupy my mind. While I was on my phone, I realised Grace had unblocked me, and I texted her impulsively. “Okay. Come in then”. “Thanks”. Grace shut the door behind me, while I walked inside her hotel room. “I’m sorry for bothering you”, I said, turning to Grace. “It's fine”, she said, walking towards her bed where her laptop laid on. “I know you aren't a big fan of movies, but I was just about to watch one. Want to join me?” She asked. I smiled at the fact that she still remembered that I did not have the attention span to watch anything longer ten minutes. “Sure”, I nodded, willing to sit through anything rather than be alone w

JulietSomehow, I was back at the cafe, facing Grace's piercing gaze. After I struggled to hold back from crying, which I had been doing a lot these days, Grace managed to convince me to go back to the cafe with her. “So… how about Naomi and Leah?” I asked, not just because I was trying to shift

Juliet I stared at the angry expression on Declan's face, mouth slightly agape. I knew he disliked it when I asked him to follow me to an appointment, but his reaction…“Look, let's not do this now Juliet”, he said sternly. I looked away, blinking back the urge to cry. I heard Declan's tired sig

JulietI looked at the woman I call my mother incredulously. “And you know that I cannot afford to take care of the both of us”. In other words, I would be a burden to her. “And Julian…” she gasped, eyes widening. “Oh my god what will happen to your brother? Declan might not be forgiving enough

Juliet I slowly turned to my mother in law. “Provoked him?” I asked lowly, walking towards her. She frowned, taking a step back. “So that gave him the right to fucking hit me?!” I yelled, glowering at her. My hands shook with the urge to hit something. “Well…” she stuttered, shrinking away fr
