Chapter 4

Author: Arya
Sometime after midnight, Dorian finally pushed the door open.

He still carried the smell of wind, snow, and moonbell flowers. When he saw me sitting by the bed, he paused for a second, then quickly walked over.

"Why are you still awake?"

I stared at the wall in silence.

He probably thought I was upset because he had left earlier, so he reached out to touch my face.

"I'll make it up to you tomorrow."

"Haven't you always wanted to go to the amusement park?"

I looked at him blankly.

Three years ago, I had indeed said that I wanted to go to the amusement park.

Back then, Calista had spent three days at the amusement park and posted a full nine-photo grid.

In one of the photos, only half of a man’s arm was visible as he held Mickey and Minnie balloons for her.

Her caption read, "Someone treats me like a little girl."

I could not help asking Dorian:

"When you're done with work, can we go to the amusement park too?"

Dorian stroked my hair, his tone gentle.

"Of course."

"When you're feeling better, I'll book the entire park for us."

After that, I waited year after year.

I waited until my health really did get better. I waited through spring, then summer.

I waited until that amusement park had been renovated three times.

Dorian never took me there.

Every time I mentioned it, he would kiss my forehead.

"Next time."

"When I'm done with work."

"Be good, Liora. There are too many people there. I'm afraid you'll get tired."

It turned out he wasn't afraid of the crowds, or that I would get tired. He had already watched the castle light up and seen the fireworks with another woman.

So my wish became something he could put off forever with another "next time."

And now, after sleeping with Calista, he finally remembered it.

At that thought, I suddenly became calm.

All at once, the bitterness and pain seemed to settle deep inside me.

I looked at Dorian, the Alpha I had once trusted with my entire life, and slowly closed my eyes.

"Sleep. I'm tired."

Dorian was silent for a long time. He probably had not expected me to be so calm.

In the past, whenever he mentioned the amusement park, I could never stop myself from asking more.

But this time, I asked nothing.

The longer I stayed quiet, the more unsettled he seemed.

His gaze kept searching my face, looking for the woman who would still argue, still ask questions, still care.

But all he found was calm, and that calm finally made panic flicker in his eyes.

He stood by the bed and watched me for a while before finally bending down to tuck the blanket around me.

"Then sleep."

"When you wake up tomorrow, I'll take you there."

I kept my eyes closed and did not answer.

When his breathing beside me gradually evened out, I slowly opened my eyes and got out of bed as quietly as I could.

At the very back of the walk-in closet was an old wooden chest. Inside were all the things Dorian had given me over the years.

The first item was the moonstone amulet he had fastened around my neck after returning from Moon Mountain.

"Liora, I begged the Moon Goddess to give you back to me."

"From now on, I won't let you suffer again."

At the time, I had truly believed him.

Over the years, I had carefully preserved every cloak, moonbell flower, and small silver token he gave me.

Now, I returned them to the chest one by one.

Finally, I slipped the pregnancy medication into my travel bag.

When my fingers brushed over my lower abdomen, I paused.

This pup knew nothing yet. They did not know their mother was preparing to leave.

By the time the sky was almost light, I sat at the desk and wrote the last letter. There were things I had originally wanted to tell Dorian face to face.

For example, I knew that Calista had been part of that so-called prayer on Moon Mountain all along.

For example, I was pregnant.

But in the end, I tore all of it up.

The next morning, Dorian stopped short when he saw that half the closet was empty.

"Liora, where are your things?"

I looked at him and was just about to speak.

His phone rang. Calista's name flashed across the screen.

Dorian instinctively declined the call and placed his phone facedown, then seemed to notice something wrong with my expression. He reached out to touch my forehead.

"Are you feeling unwell again?"

But before his hand could reach me, the phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a video call.

Dorian hesitated for two seconds before turning away from me and answering it anyway.

He left the door slightly ajar, and I could see through the gap.

Calista stood in front of a mirror in the white gown for the Moon Goddess ceremony, her eyes red.

"Dorian, do I look bad?"

"It feels a little tight at the waist."

Dorian's gaze softened instantly.

"You look beautiful. Don't change it."

"Anything looks good on you."

"Wear that white gown for me tonight..."

After the video call ended, I finally spoke.

"Dorian, I have something..."

Dorian gave me a distracted kiss on the cheek and hurried out.

"Liora, something came up. I'll be back later."

On the day Nova turned one month old, several unfamiliar wolves arrived at the northern border town. They stopped outside the boundary and did not enter. The witch glanced out the window and said,"Moonshadow wolves."I was tying Nova's little cloak. My fingers paused for only a moment before I finished the knot."Send them away."The witch raised a brow."You don't want to know who it is?""It doesn't matter."Even so, that evening, when I carried Nova to the market to buy moon honey, I saw Dorian at the mouth of the alley. He was much thinner than I remembered. The Alpha who had once seemed so composed and untouchable now stood in the snow with white gathered across his shoulders and sleepless red in his eyes. The moment he saw me, he went still. I could feel that he wanted to come closer, but the severed bond no longer showed him the way.He took one step forward, and the witch immediately blocked him."Northern law. An Alpha whose bond has been severed may not approach his former m

Spring came late to the northern border town. By the time the snow melted, I had been there for eight months. The witch rented me the small wooden house behind her apothecary. There was a patch of land out front where snow piled up in winter and moonbell flowers could grow in spring. At first, the townspeople rarely spoke to me. They knew I was a wolf from another pack, and they knew I carried the scent of a severed bond. That kind of scent was hard to hide. It clung to me, raw and unmistakable, no matter how carefully I kept my distance.I did not try to explain. When I bought food, collected medicine, or walked through the woods, I avoided the busiest hours. The witch said I was too quiet.I lowered my head and kept sorting herbs."Quiet is good."She did not push me after that.Later, a few young wolves started playing outside the apothecary. They were curious about everything, especially stories about Moonshadow Pack. At first, I did not want to tell them anything. Then one little

When I woke up the next morning, I was on the floor. The herbs had burned out, their bitter scent lingered in the room, and the snow outside had stopped. The witch sat in a chair with a bowl of warm medicine in her hands. When she saw my eyes open, she reached over and checked my forehead."You made it through."My throat hurt too much to speak. The first thing I did was touch my stomach. The witch understood."The pup is fine.""She's stronger than you think."Only then did my hands loosen. My palms were bloody from where my nails had dug in through the night. The witch handed me the medicine."Drink.""From now on, there will be no mate sense between you and the Alpha of Moonshadow Pack. He won't be able to find you through the bond. You won't feel him either."I held the bowl as the steam stung my eyes. During the worst of the pain, I had thought I might regret it. Now there was a hollow place in my chest, but it was quiet. The thread that had tormented me for years had finally snap

By the time I reached the northern border town, dusk had already fallen. Moonshadow territory was far behind me, the mind-link was gone, and the air no longer carried even the faintest trace of Dorian's cedar scent.Snow fell outside the station. I pulled my cloak tighter around myself and rested one hand over my lower abdomen. Only after the pain in my stomach settled did I follow the stone road deeper into town. The witch's apothecary stood at the end of a narrow alley. Bundles of dried silverleaf hung beside the door, clicking softly whenever the wind moved through them. The old woman behind the counter looked up when I entered."The Luna of Moonshadow Pack."She sounded like she had been expecting me. I was not surprised. The northern witches had dealt with wolves for generations. They could smell bonds, bloodlines, and lies better than most wolves could.I placed a pouch of moonstone coins on the counter."I want to sever a mate bond."The witch's gaze dropped to my stomach."You'

Dorian's POVThe moment Dorian heard Liora had left, his wolf broke loose inside him. The silver lamps on the moonstone altar toppled under the sudden gust of power, flames hit the floor, and the guests stumbled back with frightened cries. He bent over the altar, his knuckles braced against the stone. Claws tore through his fingertips, and his black ceremonial jacket split across his shoulders as his body fought the shift. The next second, a wounded howl ripped out of his throat, crashing through the altar chamber and shaking loose pale dust from the moonstone ceiling.Calista stood there in her white gown, still holding the four-year-old pup by the hand. All the color drained from her face. For the first time, fear surfaced in her eyes, raw and unhidden. When the Beta rushed in, Dorian's eyes had already turned the molten gold of a wolf on the edge."Alpha.""Luna left pack territory before dawn. She cut off every mind-link. Our men couldn't track where she went. All we know is that s

After the door closed behind Dorian, I stood there for a while before slowly lowering my eyes. There was no need to say goodbye to Dorian after all.Not long after, Calista posted another TikTok.In the video, the pup was standing in front of a moonstone backdrop while a white ceremonial gown hung behind Calista. Her caption read, "Family portrait today, Moon Goddess blessing tomorrow."She never showed the man's face, but the hand adjusting the pup's tiny bow tie bore the black ring I had chosen for Dorian.I watched the video twice, then turned off the screen. That night, I was packing the last of my things when the bedroom door opened.Calista walked in wearing a plain white dress, her hair loose over her shoulders."Liora." She smiled softly. "Dorian said something came up at the council chamber. He was worried you might feel unwell, so he asked me to stay with you for a while."She said it so naturally that anyone else would have believed she was only being thoughtful.I sat besid
