My father was certain that the mother and daughter my husband brought back from Southern River were the daughter and granddaughter of an impeached official. As such, he locked them up. Afton Springfield, my husband, begged for my father’s mercy for seven days and nights outside the palace. This caused my father to fly into a rage. He wanted to get us divorced and execute Afton. To appease my father, I had begged him to release the mother and daughter as well in the previous timeline, even though I was heavily pregnant. Feeling resigned, my father sent the mother—Melinda—and daughter to the army as soldier servants. He also spared Afton and ordered him to treat me well so that he would not let me down. For ten years, we loved each other and got along cordially. However, ten years later, he poisoned my father and brother. Then, he put a child on the throne so that he could become the regent. Once he was done, he forced me to apologize before Melinda’s tombstone. He also had hooligans humiliate me. As for my son, he threw him into a den of snakes, and my son died in agony. In my despair, I saw his resentful gaze. “You killed Melinda and her daughter. You have no right to continue living! If Melinda didn’t die, she would be my wife, and you would live at the bottom of society. You could never compare to Melinda.” When I opened my eyes again, I found myself pleading for my father’s mercy with Afton. This time, I decided to fulfill Afton’s wish.

Chapter 1

“Arwen, there are plenty of other men in the world. Why insist on this one?” My father’s earnest words entered my ears.

I snapped out of my daze and stared at my father in bewilderment.

He looked exactly the same as I remembered him, only that his hair had not turned gray. He did not have wrinkles at the corner of his eyes yet either.

Was I dreaming?

I looked around cautiously, and all the furnishings looked familiar.

I felt disoriented. I remembered that when I was just a child, my father had comforted me after my mother’s death by saying, “Once a person dies, they will see the people they miss dearly.”

Upon remembering those words, I opened my eyes wide, and they welled up with tears.

As I endured the pain in my body, I grabbed the hem of my father’s tunic and started weeping silently. As tears rolled down my face, I said, “Father.”

The moment my father saw this, his heart broke for me, and he quickly grabbed my shoulders. “Arwen, you’re a princess. How could you cry for a man?”

I was about to apologize for my ignorance and rebelliousness. However, I sensed the warmth from his palms, and my eyes flew wide open.

Only then did I notice that I was in my father’s study, not in the fiery depths of hell.

My hands were fair and tender, and I had a small bulge in my stomach.

At this point, I could not hear a single thing from my father anymore.

Some of the tales I had read during my leisure time had spoken of returning to the past. So, I held my father’s hand tightly as I continued crying.

I had returned to the past.

Joy overwhelmed me so completely that I could not say a word.

My father sighed. “Very well. For your sake, I will forgive that scoundrel. But that woman has to be dealt with. I do not want you to suffer.

“Right now, Afton is still pleading for my mercy at the palace gates. Arwen—”

Before my father finished speaking, I snapped out of my musings and ran toward the palace gate.

My heart hammered against my chest so hard that it almost leapt out. When my father saw how quickly I ran, he sighed again and swallowed his words.

I did not have time to think about it.

Everything in the previous timeline was like a dream. My despair and pain still lingered in me.

Soon, I arrived at the palace gate, and Afton was there.

He stood tall and straight, just like he did when he dragged me out of the fire.

Once again, I lost control over my tears.

In the previous timeline, I had not dared to cry. I neither wanted to nor could.

This time, I could finally expel all the resentment and aggrievance within me.

Willow Lane, my servant, watched me, and there was surprise in her eyes. As she held my hand, she said, “Your Highness, most men cheat. You are a princess. You must be a good role model and remember that envy is one of the seven deadly sins.”

I stared at Willow and the worry on her face. However, I knew that beneath all her advice was a wicked heart.

So, I sneered and interrupted her. “I am the princess, and he is merely a subject. How dare he be unfaithful toward me?”
