“Why not just kill yourself, you ugly whore?”
I don’t think I could count the amount of times I’ve been told such by the people of my pack.
The man who bumped into me sent me an ugly sneer before walking away.
“Asshole.” I mumbled under my breath.
Being the only omega of the pack meant I had to endure abuse and mistreatments from the members of Dark Silver Pack. My parents had died when I was young so it meant nobody could defend me from all the harsh treatments.
I’d always hoped for a day when I would find a mate. I let out a breath as I made my way through the hall. It was the Moonlight Festival, an auspicious night when everybody gathered to celebrate all the prosperity and peace we’ve achieved in the pack.
“Sorry.” I mumbled underneath my breath as another person bumped into my shoulder again.
The hall had been decorated just for this night. The place had an air of festivity that got every single person in a celebrative mood. I could almost forget all my sorrows and pain.
“Attention.”
The sound of a mic drew everybody’s attention. We all turned to look at the source of the sound. I held my breath when my eyes fell on the Alpha.
Callen Everdeen.
Handsome was an understatement when trying to describe him. He had the face of an angel and the body of a Greek god himself. I had to stop myself from drooling. It was hard to take my eyes off him.
He was dressed in a tailored suit that seemed to hug him in just the right places. He tapped on the mic a little and brought it to his mouth.
“Esteemed members of this pack. I welcome you all to the Moonlight Festival. May the blessings of the Moon Goddess be upon this night of festivities.”
He paused, his eyes searching through the crowd. I held my breath when his gaze landed on me. It seemed to linger for quite a while.
“And may the odds be in our favor for years and years.”
The whole hall erupted into applause and cheers. Callen had that charisma in him. He could draw the attention of a room effortlessly. He had the looks for it too.
I could never talk to him though. The Alpha wasn’t someone who would bother talking with the likes of me. As much as it hurt to think about it, I would have to be content with admiring him from a distance.
I let out a sigh and made my way to the food table. I grabbed a glass of wine and brought the cup to my lips.
“Yes, I agree to be your mate.”
I turned back just in time to watch a couple’s mating bond blossom. The man was staring at his partner with love in his eyes.
He pulled her closer to him and placed a kiss on her lips. The whole room awed at their heartwarming display.
As happy as I was for them, it was hard to ignore the pang in my chest as I thought about how I was yet to find one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up not able to get one. I was nothing but the unwanted omega of Dark Silver Pack that nobody wanted.
Just as I was about to walk away, I bumped into someone. I watched with horror as the drink spilled on another woman’s shirt.
“What the actual fuck?” She yelled, anger in her eyes.
“I—I’m so s—sorry. I—”
“Can you stop stuttering, you retarded fool? Why the hell did you spill your drink on me? You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
She was fuming with anger and I was getting the bad feeling that things were about to get ugly. I could feel my heart beating fast against my chest. My whole body seemed to shake with fear.
“What’s going on here?”
I turned to see Alpha Callen staring at us. My heart beat skyrocketed as I stared back at him.
“This foolish omega spilled her drink on me.”
I expected him to start berating me but he remained silent, his sole gaze fixed on me. I found myself unable to look away as well. All eyes were fixed on us but I didn’t care. All I could think of was Callen.
My whole body began to feel hot and it was like all my senses had gone on autopilot. My eyes widened as the realization dawned on me.
Mate.
This was finally it. I’d finally found my mate after all these years of waiting. The day had finally arrived.
I expected to see some kind of reaction on his face but all I got was a cold, impassive look. That was—odd. Did he not feel anything?
“You’re my mate.” The words left my mouth before I could hold back.
His expression tightened at those words. I did not expect the look of disgust that crept onto his face.
He let out a frustrated sigh and stepped closer to me. The girl wasn’t ranting anymore but I didn’t care for any of that. I was only focused on Callen.
“This must be some cruel joke by the moon goddess.”
It felt like someone had kicked me right in the stomach. I never expected to hear those words come from his mouth.
“I—I don’t—” I bit on my lip, trying to force the tears down. All eyes were fixed on me and I could feel the judgement in their stares.
“I think this has gone on long enough so I’ll save you the stress.”
He closed the distance between us. He was so close that I could feel the warmth of his body. His eyes however were icy and emotionless.
“I, Callen Everdeen, reject you as my mate and Luna.”
The pain was unbearable. My heart had just been ripped into a thousand pieces. Callen didn’t look one bit remorseful. I could feel my body shutting down as black spots dotted my vision.
“You can go ahead and die for all I care.”
Those were the last words I heard before collapsing into the darkness
Lana’s POVMoonbathing, I learned quickly, was less mystical ritual and more deliberate stillness. The clearing sat just beyond the houses, a gentle slope of pale grass surrounded by low stone markers that hummed faintly with old magic. Nothing dramatic happened when we arrived. No chanting. No sudden surges of power. Just the moon above us, full and steady, washing everything in silver light that felt oddly intimate, as though it were paying attention.Mara dropped onto the grass first with a satisfied sigh. “I forgot how much I missed this,” she said, stretching her arms over her head. “Actual rest without someone asking me to justify my existence.”Kael sat a little more carefully, folding his long legs and leaning back on his hands. “You say that like it happens often.”“It happens constantly,” Mara replied. “You just aren’t around for most of it.”I lo
Warren’s POVDistance was easier when the road demanded attention.I focused on the terrain, the shift of earth beneath my boots, the way the trees thinned and thickened as I moved farther from home. The farther I got, the quieter everything became—no pack chatter, no overlapping scents, no Lana watching me like she was waiting for something I didn’t know how to give.Traveling alone used to feel natural. Now it felt deliberate. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, restless and alert, not agitated but watchful in a way that reminded me of old instincts resurfacing. Leadership instincts. Protection. The kind that didn’t ask permission before settling into your bones.Alpha.The word still felt heavy, even after everything began to make sense again.I stopped at a clearing just before dusk, the sky bruised with the promise of night. The elder I was meeting had chosen the location deliberately—neutral ground, far from territory lines, where power couldn’t lean too heavily on place.Smart.I
Lana’s POVI found Warren near the stables, already half-packed and tightening the straps on his travel bag like he was afraid standing still might give something away. His movements were precise, efficient—too efficient. The kind of focus people used when they didn’t want to think.“Warren,” I said, slowing my steps as I approached. He didn’t look up right away. “I’m heading out.”My chest sank anyway. “Out where?”“One of the elders sent word,” he replied. “They want to speak to me privately. About Callen.”That name landed between us like a dropped blade.“How long will you be gone?” I asked.“Not long.” He finally turned toward me, his expression carefully neutral. “A few days, at most.”I nodded, even though that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. “You didn’t tell me you were leaving.”“I didn’t think it was necessary.”There it was again. That cool distance, that invisible wall I kept running into no matter how carefully I approached.“Is everything okay?” I asked quietly. His gaze
Lana’s POVI found Warren near the training grounds just before dusk, standing at the edge of the clearing with his sleeves rolled up and his posture locked tight, like he was bracing for something that never came. The air around him felt colder than the rest of the park, sharper, almost clipped. For a moment, I just watched him.He wasn’t doing anything—no sparring, no pacing—but his presence filled the space in a way that made it hard to breathe. Alpha energy, my wolf whispered, faint but insistent. It was strange how obvious it felt now, like my instincts had been quietly catching up to something everyone else already knew.I cleared my throat.“Warren?”He turned slowly. His eyes flicked over me, paused for half a second too long, then shifted away again.“What is it?” he asked. That was it. No warmth. No edge either. Just distance.“I just wanted to talk,” I said. “You’ve been… different.”His jaw tightened. “I’ve been busy.”“With me,” I added softly.Silence stretched betwee
Lana’s POVI learned very quickly that once people accepted change was real, they stopped arguing about whether it should happen and started negotiating how much of it they could survive. That shift was subtle but unmistakable. Resistance no longer took the form of denial or obstruction. It arrived
Lana’s POVThe response came quietly, which was how I knew it mattered. No announcements. No objections raised in open session. Just a subtle adjustment in language that arrived folded into a routine memorandum, as though it were nothing more than an administrative ref
Lana’s POVBy the time the day of the forum arrived, the citadel had already decided it did not like the idea. That displeasure showed itself in small, precise ways—rooms reassigned without notice, seating charts revised twice, a delay in distributing the agenda that felt accidental only if one was
Lana’s POVThe first thing I noticed was not that the resistance had weakened. It was that it had grown tired. Not exhausted, not broken—just worn thin in a way that made even its confidence feel brittle. There was a difference, and it mattered more than anyone wanted to admit. Tired systems made s
