Chapter 2

作者: QJH
I walked into the dorm to find Danny Moore glued to his phone, a smug, giddy smile plastered across his face as he typed away.

A dull ache settled in my chest.

I knew instantly who he was messaging.

"Oh, hey. You're back," Danny said when he noticed me. "I thought you were staying at your place tonight?"

I gave a casual nod.

My family lived right here in town, so my roommates always assumed I went home whenever I didn't return to the dorm.

In reality, I spent most of those nights holed up in Vera's off-campus apartment.

Danny was practically glowing as he tossed an arm over my shoulder. "I had no idea that was your sister who picked you up from the party earlier! I totally thought she was your girlfriend."

I froze mid-unpacking.

Sister?

Something twisted hard in my gut.

So that was how Vera had spun it.

How classy. Sleeping with her own "brother".

Our families had been friends for generations, and Vera and I grew up together.

We'd been secretly dating since high school, keeping our relationship hidden from both our families for five long years.

She had once promised she'd marry me after graduation.

I never imagined she would turn around and tire of me so quickly.

This wasn't even the first time she had fooled around with other men.

I had caught her sending flirty texts in the past, and I was so consumed by jealousy that I'd even threatened to break up with her.

But every single time, she would smooth things over, reassuring me that those men were just playthings to her, and that I was her one and only.

Whenever I begged her to make us public, she always refused. Her excuse was always the same—since our families were so close, coming clean would mean being pushed straight into an engagement and forced into marriage the second we were old enough.

I couldn't bear the thought of throwing five years away, so I backed down time and time again.

But this time, I was done waiting for her.

"Yves, what's wrong?" Danny eyed me with a hint of suspicion.

I snapped back to reality. "Nothing. I'm just a little tired."

Suspecting nothing, he excitedly shoved his phone screen in my face. "She invited me to go racing with her tomorrow! How did she know I was into cars? Hey, which outfit do you think looks cooler? You gotta know your sister's taste, right?"

Vera once told me that racing was the only thing she loved almost as much as breathing.

In five years together, she had never taken me along once.

Yet now, to win Danny over, she was handing him the most exclusive spot by her side without a second thought.

Everything I thought was sacred had meant nothing to her at all.

I looked into Danny's eager eyes and felt an odd sense of weightlessness wash over me.

The weight that had been chaining me down was finally lifted.

"Wear this," I said, pulling a leather biker jacket from his closet. "She goes for the wild type."

  • I Only Settle Down for the Best   Chapter 13

After we got married, Eliza and I moved back into the old family home. She insisted on baking a batch of cookies for me, and before long, the kitchen was filled with the sweet, rich aroma of butter and vanilla. When Eliza finally stepped out of the kitchen, a smudge of flour still clung to her sleeve. Seeing me curled up on the couch, half-asleep, she leaned down to press a kiss to my forehead and gently pulled the throw blanket over my shoulders. I blinked up at her, my vision adjusting to the light. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind her, framing her silhouette in a warm, golden halo. Even the usually cool, guarded look in her eyes had softened into pure affection. On a whim, I slipped off the couch barefoot and walked over to the bookshelf. Crouching down, I pulled out a dusty metal tin box stuffed to the brim with forgotten treasures. It held nothing of actual monetary value; just a handful of lopsided paper cranes I'd folded as a kid, a colle

I went straight back to my family's house. The moment my parents heard what had happened, they called the Fuller family without hesitation. "There's no way in hell we're sitting back and letting those people walk all over our kids." The next day, Lane Corporation's stock tanked at the opening bell, hitting the daily limit-down for three consecutive trading sessions. David Lane, Vera's grandfather, personally visited my family and the Fullers.I didn't know the specifics of what he discussed with my parents, but Eliza was released from the detention center that very afternoon, with all charges quietly dropped. And immediately after, Dad severed every single business tie we had with Lane Corporation. When Mom had afternoon tea with Mary Garner, Eliza's mother, Mary smiled gently and said, "Their lives belong to them. All we need to do is be there to catch them if they fall."Just like that, Vera's standing as the family heiress hung by a thread. Her old circle of friends van

I froze on the spot.Vera clutched her cheek as she sobbed hysterically; her face was already red and swollen. Eliza stood before her, faint traces of blood staining the edge of her nails. When she turned back to face me, all the terrifying rage melted away, replaced by a quiet, gentle warmth. Eliza held out her arms. "Yves, give me a hug."I stepped forward and pulled her tightly into my arms. All the lingering resentment, the leftover fear, and the sickening weight of years of deception evaporated the second my arms wrapped around her. When the police arrived, Eliza didn't resist. She gave my hand a gentle squeeze and whispered, "Don't worry, I'll be fine."I went straight to the hospital.Vera had a laceration across the bridge of her nose, and her face was so swollen that her features looked distorted. The moment she spotted me, her eyes lit up."Yes, I didn't mean any of those things I said. I was wrong. I was just so out of my mind with jealousy when I saw you wi

  • I Only Settle Down for the Best   Chapter 10

I spent over two weeks recovering at Eliza's apartment before we finally returned to campus together once my injuries had healed. The second our car pulled up to the main gates and Eliza helped me out, Vera came rushing out of nowhere. She shoved Eliza aside and grabbed my wrist in a vice grip. Her grip was so hard it sent a sharp spike of pain through my barely healed arm. Before I could pull back, her free hand was already swinging toward Eliza's face. "Eliza, you shameless bitch! Yves is my boyfriend!"Eliza stepped back, dodging the blow with a cold sneer. "You two already broke up.""What do you know?" Vera snarled, her eyes bloodshot. "Yves is mine! Do you honestly think he actually likes you? He's just using you to make me jealous!"I shoved Vera away. "Vera, stop making a scene! Are you deaf? We're done!"Vera reached for me again, her fingers digging in. "Yves, I wasn't serious about Danny. You promised you would stay with me forever…"Eliza said, "I don't care why Yv

By the time I woke up the next morning, warm sunlight was filtering through the sheer curtains. I shifted slightly, but a sharp spike of pain shot through my ankle. Hearing movement inside, Eliza pushed open the door and walked into the bedroom. "Let's get you washed up first."A faint blush crept up my neck as she helped me out of bed and guided me toward the bathroom. Her constant, gentle attentiveness made me a little flustered at first, but it didn't take long to get used to it. When I stepped up to the sink to brush my teeth, she handed me a toothbrush already coated with toothpaste. When we sat down for breakfast, the dining table was lined with all my favorite foods. Since my injuries needed time to heal, I put in a request for medical leave from school. With graduation just around the corner, Eliza didn't have many classes left, so she stayed at the apartment almost constantly, keeping me company day in and day out. She rewatched old movies with me, her head re

Eliza insisted I stay at her place."Since you agreed to give us a try, you have to at least give me a shot at proving I'm qualified to be your girlfriend," she said, helping me to my feet. I was covered in scrapes, and my ankle was in rough shape. There was no way I could make it back to the dorm like this. I didn't want to go home to my parents looking so pitiful, either—it would only worry them. Besides, even though Eliza and I had been rivals for years, I knew deep down that she was someone I could fully trust implicitly. Looking back, the three of us had always been inseparable as kids. With her soft, delicate features, Eliza had always been prettier than Vera. Back then, I was too young to know any better and insisted that Eliza was going to be my bride when we grew up. Over time, though, Eliza grew quieter and more distant. Whatever childish affection I'd had for her eventually got buried under a wave of adolescent stubbornness. I convinced myself she was always pi
