Chapter 3

Penulis: Through Meteorites
Sylvia's POV

I began packing my belongings after I returned to my marital home.

Aiden and I had picked this house together. He told me that he felt happy just thinking about how I would be there to greet him whenever he returned from work.

The lights in the house would be switched on. There would be soup boiling on the stove, and the balcony would be filled with my favorite camellias.

However, at that moment, I realized that there were traces of Natalia all over our home.

The fridge was packed with her favorite peach-flavored sparkling water. The cashmere shawl she had left behind was draped across the couch. Her bridesmaid dress looked even more intricate than my wedding dress as they hung side by side.

I stared at the two dresses as I stood in the walk-in closet. An inexplicable bitterness bubbled in my chest.

It turned out that I had already been slowly replaced by Natalia in Aiden's heart even before the wedding.

I didn't cry. Instead, I just placed my identification documents, passport, and clothes into my suitcase.

I heard the sounds of the front door being unlocked when I was halfway through packing.

Aiden had returned. He was holding a jewelry store bag, and his words were colored with a coaxing tone when he said, "Don't be angry, babe. I saw this pair of earrings when I passed by the store earlier. I remember that you're fond of pearls."

He opened the box, revealing a pair of pearl earrings nestled within.

It was true that I liked pearls.

I had stared at the earrings for a long time when we passed by the store, but I hadn't bought them because they were too expensive.

At the time, Aiden held my hand and said with a smile, "I'll buy you something even better after we get married."

He had fulfilled his promise and bought the earrings for me. However, the earrings he bought were studs.

I never pierced my ears.

Natalia was the one who did.

Aiden approached me and pulled me into his arms. "Let's sweep everything that happened tonight under the rug, alright?"

I looked down at the earrings.

Another receipt slipped out from the jewelry store bag before I could say a single word.

The price on the receipt was extremely eye-catching. It was for a bag that cost ten times more than the earrings.

I recognized the brand of the bag.

Natalia had uploaded a post about it on her social media account about half an hour ago. In the photo, she was hugging the bag with a radiant smile.

The caption read, "A certain someone sent a celebratory gift to me after I secured a new project."

Tears streamed down my face as I stared at the receipt.

"Why are you crying?" Aiden asked, looking like he was reaching the end of his patience. "I'm getting tired of your behavior, Sylvia."

I was stunned upon hearing his words.

In the past, Aiden always panicked whenever I cried. He would clumsily wipe my tears before pulling me into his embrace and comforting me over and over again.

"Don't cry, Sylvia. I always get so flustered whenever you cry."

Once, I had jolted awake from a nightmare in the middle of the night with tears in my eyes.

Aiden immediately drove to my place after buying a tub of ice cream for me.

"I know that you didn't have anyone to comfort you when you were a child, Sylvia," he said. "I'll comfort you every time you cry from now on."

The Aiden of the past truly cared about me whenever I shed tears. However, at that moment, he only felt exhausted when he saw my tears.

It turned out that it was pointless for a person to cry when the other person had already shut them out of their heart.

I lifted my hand and wiped my tears. "I'm fine," I said softly.

Aiden seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. He approached me and leaned down, trying to kiss me.

I reflexively moved my face away.

Aiden's expression turned glacial. He ran a frustrated hand through his hair and said, "Forget it. I'll let you calm down."

He then turned around and headed into the study.

Later that night, I was just about to switch off the light when my tablet lit up where I had left it on the bedside cabinet.

Aiden was still logged into the chatting app on the device.

I was just about to lock the tablet when I noticed Natalia's name in the notification.

My eyes stung at just the sight of her name.

"Did you manage to coax her?" Natalia asked.

"No," Aiden replied. "She's getting more and more difficult to coax."

Natalia sent a laughing emoji. "Did you make it up to her tonight?"

A few seconds passed before Aiden replied, "Don't bring it up. She rejected me. But it's fine. It's been seven years. I lost interest in her body a long time ago. Fortunately, she pushed me away. I didn't have to force myself."

My eyes stung as I stared at his reply. However, I had already run out of tears.

It turned out that, from Aiden's perspective, he had to force himself to be intimate with me.

I switched off the tablet and put the pearl earrings back in the jewelry box. I then placed the jewelry box and my wedding ring on the cabinet next to the door.

It felt like I was finally waking up from a dream.

Just then, I received a message notifying me that the payment for my plane ticket had been processed.

I was scheduled to fly to Frostbelt at 3:00 am the next day.

I could fly to any city that I wanted to from now on. However, I would never land by Aiden's side ever again.

Sylvia's POVAiden finally managed to call me one day.It was snowing in Frostbelt. I had just finished snapping a set of delayed shots of the aurora. My fingers had turned stiff from the cold.Aiden spoke in a deep, hoarse voice on the other end of the line."I know that it's too late for me to say anything now, Sylvia, but I truly regret my actions. I think about the 'what ifs' every day. What if I hadn't just said that you were understanding at the party? What if I had chased after you? What if I hadn't removed the photo wall? What if I had noticed how upset you were earlier?"His voice sounded utterly broken by the time he was done speaking."Maybe we wouldn't have ended up like this."I looked at the snowy plains in the distance."There are no 'what ifs', Aiden," I said softly.Aiden fell silent on the other end of the line."You didn't just hurt me deeply once," I continued. "You did it countless times. I didn't stop loving you immediately. It happened after I was disap

Sylvia's POVNatalia's reputation was in utter shambles in her social circle. In the beginning, someone leaked a video of what happened at the party, showing how Aiden was able to name ten good things about Natalia, how he texted her the most, and how he slowly changed my wedding to fit her preferences. One could argue that Aiden and Natalia were just good friends if these incidents were mentioned one at a time. But when they were brought up together, their despicable intentions became blatantly obvious.Someone began leaving vague insults in the group chat."If they're such good friends, why did she betray her best friend to steal her boyfriend?""They were going to get married soon, and yet she was still editing his wedding speech for him. She truly doesn't know her place.""She doesn't deserve to call herself Sylvia's best friend. She only got close to her to steal her man!"It didn't take long before someone started to dig deeper. It turned out that similar incidents had a

Sylvia's POVAiden suddenly sank to his knees upon hearing my words. The snow was extremely cold. His knees made a muffled thud when they sank into the snow."I've learned my lesson, Sylvia," he said. "I'll never see Natalia ever again. I'll delete all the chat logs. I'll restart the wedding preparations. I'll give you everything that you want. Just please come back, okay?"My colleagues looked at us from where they stood a distance away. One of them wanted to step forward, but I shook my head to stop them.I looked at Aiden, who was kneeling before me.I didn't feel any hatred or pain in my heart. I only felt a sense of calm that came when the dust had settled."Aiden, you could never afford the things that I wanted in the past. I don't want them anymore, so there's no need for you to give them to me now."Aiden looked as if he was teetering on the edge of a breakdown when he looked up at me."But I love you," he said. "I truly do…""It's time to leave those feelings in the

Third-Person POVAiden's phone chimed again. The wedding planner had sent a document to him, explaining, "This is the last proposal that Ms. Johnson approved before she cancelled the wedding, Mr. Ramsey. She said that you could keep it as a keepsake if you want to."Aiden tapped on the document. The first page displayed the first version of the wedding venue that was decorated with a sea of white camellias. The second page showed the modified version where the camellias were changed to red roses.Every change was accompanied with a short note."Mr. Johnson said that this was Ms. Williams' suggestion.""Mr. Johnson said that Ms. Williams prefers this.""Mr. Johnson told us to follow Ms. Williams' orders."Every note felt like a slap to Aiden's face. He finally understood that Sylvia hadn't cancelled the wedding on a whim. He was the one who slowly removed everything that she liked from the wedding, prompting her to decide that she didn't want to be forced into a position that

Third-Person POVAiden's face slowly darkened as he gripped his phone."She's moving to Frostbelt?" he demanded. "When did she decide this?"The wedding planner hesitated for a moment before answering, "Ms. Johnson said that she received the offer a long time ago, but she only made her decision today. She also said that she would pay all the cancellation fees for the wedding. You don't need to do anything."Aiden looked as if the wedding planner had just told him something utterly ridiculous."I don't need to do anything?" he repeated. "She just cancelled our wedding!""Ms. Johnson made herself very clear last night," the wedding planner said carefully. "She said that the wedding had become completely unrecognizable."The wedding planner's words were like needles that stabbed themselves into Aiden's heart. He reflexively looked down at the computer screen.Natalia was still on the other end of the line. Her eyes looked bloodshot as she hugged her knees."Did Sylvia get mad bec

Sylvia's POVThe next day, I noticed that the door of the study was ajar when I dragged my suitcase past it.Aiden's muffled chuckles came from within. There was a video call running on his computer screen.Natalia was wearing a nightdress. She leaned against the headboard while holding a wedding speech."This part sounds so formal, Aiden," she said. "Thank you for your companionship for the last seven years, Sylvia."She laughed before continuing, "You sound like a leader making a speech."Aiden also laughed, saying, "I'm not good at writing these things."Natalia propped her chin on her hand and looked at him. "You can write something like 'You make me feel at ease like a spring day'. Isn't that more romantic?"Aiden fell silent for a few seconds before saying in a low voice, "That fits you more."It was quiet on the other side of the screen."Are you sure that you want to write that for her then?" Natalia asked softly.Aiden didn't answer her immediately. A long time pas
