Draven’s POV

The moment Ronan touched her throat, I stopped thinking like a man. And started thinking like a monster.

The room smelled of fear, blood, rain… and Bella.

Her scent cut through everything else. It hit something violent inside me.

Every instinct I possessed screamed one thing.

Kill him.

But I held still. Barely.

Ronan finally released Bella with a rough shove, though his eyes never left mine. Bella stumbled backward immediately toward Alan, breathing hard.

My gaze flicked to her ins

Bella’s POV“Not alone how.”I was already shoving my feet into boots I hadn’t laced, one hand braced on the wall because my side still didn’t want to hold me up on its own.Thor didn’t answer. He just pulled the door open and looked at me like every second I spent asking questions was a second we didn’t have.I stopped asking. I moved. The east ridge sat a good ten minutes out on a bike, less if you didn’t care about the switchbacks, and Thor clearly didn’t care tonight. Wind tore past my ears hard enough to sting, and my side screamed at every bump in the road, and none of it mattered, because underneath the pain there was a colder thought running on repeat, over and over, drowning out even the engine. They found Clara. She’s not alone. Not she confessed. Not she’s in custody. She’s not alone. We came up over the last rise and I saw the torches first, a loose circle of them, staked into the dirt, throwing long shadows that moved wrong, too fast, like the people holding them couldn’t

Bella’s POVThe knock came before I’d even caught my breath from the stairs, two knuckles, soft, already flinching before it landed against the wood.I knew whose it was without opening my eyes. I always know.“Go away,” I meant to say. What came out instead was, “It’s open,” in a voice that didn’t sound like it belonged to either version of me the one who’d just watched Draven confess in front of the whole council, or the one still bleeding through a bandage that had given up an hour ago.He came in slow, weight forward on the balls of his feet, like the room might still be armed. Something sat wrapped in cloth in one hand.“You said alone.”“I say a lot of things.” I dragged myself up onto the edge of the bed, hissing when my side pulled tight. “You don’t usually listen to that one either.”The corner of his mouth moved. Didn’t make it all the way to a smile.“Gave you twenty minutes.”“Generous of you.”He didn’t say anything back, and that got to me more than any clever answer cou

Bella’s POV"Are you alright to be standing," Melissa, the grey-haired elder, mumbled, studying me the way she might study a sick bird."We hadn't expected you'd manage the summons at all.""Something more important came up," I said.Nobody asked what it was, and I didn't offer it.It would be embarrassing if I had to admit that I'd limped all the way here after learning of this council meeting. My legs weren't entirely sure we should be upright. I ignored them the same way I'd been ignoring most of my body since the crash, filing the ache away somewhere I could deal with it later, once I wasn't standing in a room full of people deciding the shape of the rest of my life."While we're all here," I said, "I'd like to know what the council decided. About the race."Ronan made a sound from where he was still gathering himself off the floor, caught between a laugh and a cough."My little mate wants to know the results," he rasped. "Like there's any question.""You're right, there shouldn't

RonanI hadn't slept in two days.I knew because my phone kept buzzing on the table where I'd left it.A bright number flickered every minute.I should have been riding the high of my success by now — beating Bella at her own game, getting her back. Instead I had basically lost everything. She had won the race, was likely going to get her freedom, and was now injured.Every ounce of rage brewing in my gut had only gotten worse since I'd stood outside that tent and heard my own uncle tell me I was finished.Finished.The word kept looping through my skull like something stuck on repeat, no matter how much whiskey I poured down my throat. My phone buzzed against the desk.I ignored it.It buzzed again."Alpha." Caleb's voice through the door, careful — everyone had started talking to me like that lately, like I was a bomb that might go off at any moment. "Frey's here. Says it's urgent."I tossed back a glass of whiskey, looking at the door."Send him in."Frey came through the door, dre

Bella POVClara stood in the doorway, a folded jacket in her arms, that looked like Draven's. She had that neutral expression that I was used to."I heard you were awake," she said. "I wanted to see for myself.”I didn't answer right away.I looked at the jacket in her arms, folded neat, corners squared like she'd pressed them flat on purpose before knocking.Small, steady hands. Was it possible she'd loosened that bolt and walked away without anyone noticing. She noticed me staring and smiled“ I also came to return Draven's laundry” she mumbled softly."You can come in," I said, because refusing her would tell her I already knew something, and I wasn't ready to hand her that yet.She stepped inside, closing the door behind her, and set the jacket at the foot of my bed."I heard about the bike," she said.Of course you did."Everyone has," I said. "You're a little late to the gossip."Something flickered across her face, an emotion that looked suspiciously like rage."I wanted to see

Bella’s POV I didn't lose consciousness all at once.At least, I was sure I didn't. My eyelids felt heavy, like someone had filled them with cement. That, and the fact that noises floated through my consciousness in bits and pieces, the world sliding out from under me and then dragging itself back, over and over, like a crashing wave.It was really embarrassing, especially since I had been making a very big deal out of arguing with Draven.I didn't have very long to think about that, because suddenly the ground was moving under me. Draven's chest under my cheek, the low rumble of him talking to someone over my head, his voice too controlled to be calm."—bleeding through, get Cade to bring the kit to my quarters—"His quarters.I wanted to argue that I was fine in the medical room, but I didn't have the strength to make the words line up in my mouth, so I let it go, which scared me more than the dizziness did.I was becoming soft, letting myself rely on him too much. It was not going

Bella's POVI ran the third switchback eleven times before I let myself stop.Draven hadn't come down to the track that morning — pack business. Bella's POV"Hi, I'm Bella," I whispered, staring back at the little boy with his wide brown eyes.He was a cute kid, red hair falling over his forehead into his face, and he seemed entirely unbothered by the fact that he was lying on a stranger in the middle of the road."Jamie." Ronan's POVThe bottle was half-empty.I had been measuring what was left against what I still needed to get through the night. The fire in the study had burned down to the coals and nobody had come to rebuild it because I'd thrown the last servant out two hours ago when he'd asked if I needed it.
