Dove pov

I sit cross-legged on my bed, mindlessly pulling at a stray thread on my patchwork quilt.

Eden sits with her back to me, preening herself in the mirror of her vanity.

Night has well and truly fallen, and instead of grumbling at Eden to snuff out the gaslit lamp, I'm sitting up, biding my time.

I'm attending the party tonight. I cannot be swayed otherwise.

"You alright?" I ask my sister as she threads her blonde hair into a braid behind her. She's been sat at that vanity for an inordinate amount of time. Her smooth skin glistens beneath the light, every errant hair plucked, every blemish treated with some creamy concoction.

"Why wouldn't I be?" She asks, finally pulling herself from the mirror.

Her gauzy nightdress sighs as she clambers onto her bed, the old cot creaking from her movement. She settles beneath the sheets, placing her frayed, threadbare stuffed teddy on her chest.

"You seem anxious," I observe. "Plus you've been smothering my creams onto yourself all night."

"I want to feel pretty," she muses, staring up at the ceiling.

I stare at the side of her face, wondering what it would feel like to be as beautiful as she is. I've never been jealous of my half-sister until I got a bit older, realising she seems to have the world at her fingertips while there isn't much in front of me."For a man?" I ask tentatively.

He turns her head to look at me before she laughs huffily. "Oh please. You of all people should know not to say that."

True I suppose. Eden has never had much of an interest in impressing people. Whoever she is seeing must be special if they enticed her to commit to them.

I'm assuming she's preparing to sneak out tonight to meet with this mysterious person as she does often. Usually she's transparent with me, not wanting to frighten me when she picks her way from the room.

"I'm just checking." I wiggle deeper under the covers. "Like dad always says, don't get pregnant."

"Trust me, that's not going to happen." She twists her finger around the tuft of hair at the end of her braid. "I would give you the same warning, but unfortunately I can't."

"Unfortunately?"

"I just feel like there's a whole world youseem to have no interest in exploring. People you have no interest in meeting..." Her brows knot with concern.

I stare up at the ceiling, resting my hands on my stomach.

I've always been a restless person, yearning for more than what life has offered me so far. Complaining about my situation, however, has never felt productive, so my sister is left not understanding a big part of me.

"It's not that I have no interest, it's that I want to make sure our father is looked after," I bring up quietly.

"He's a grown man, and not half as fragile as you think," she notes. "He might be upset if we move out and start our lives elsewhere, but he would quickly get over it."

Maybe, but not if it meant forgoing the values he holds so dear.

"I don't want him in that job forever. It's going to kill him." I roll onto my side, watching Eden fluff her stuffed teddy bears ears.

I would tell Matthias to fire him, but he's too greatly valued. Plus my father wouldn't know what to do with himself were he not in the centre of this pack's politics.

"It's stressful, but he's a good war advisor. A great one."

"I know..." I murmur. "Remember last week when he said he felt like something was coming, and Matthias dismissed him?"

I asked Matthias about it and he dismissed me abruptly enough for me to know he's anticipating something. My nerves are fried not knowing, since he usually imparts his problems onto me with ease.

"Alpha Matthias, by the way. You need to get better at speaking his title or you'll get dad in trouble," she scolds, narrowing her soft brown eyes.

"Sorry, I know." I clear my throat. "I'm just saying father is stressed, and Alpha"Matthias isn't taking his warnings seriously."

"Nothing bad is coming, don't worry. You know how dad overthinks."

Eden is disturbingly good at brushing things off. She doesn't stew in worry like I do. Were I not anxiously anticipating the party, I would be lying in bed with the weight of my problems pressing down on my chest.

"I guess so. We should probably get some sleep," I murmur.

She leans over, flicking off the lamp, dousing the room in a comfortable darkness.

"I love you, Dove." Eden's voice fills the room, easing my heartrate down to a comfortable pace.

"I love you too."

Seconds, minutes, or perhaps even hours pass by. For a while I thrum my fingers against my stomach, listening to Eden's gentle breaths. However, like most nights, they lull me into a light slumber...

I wake with a start.

The room is still dark. Tossing my comforter off my legs, I lean over to click the lamp back on. My eyes ache from the abrupt cascade of light, but a couple of blinks eases my sight back.

Eden's bed is empty, her duvet neatly folded back into place.

Glancing at the clock, I realise it's only an hour and a half until midnight.

"Eden?" I call out softly, my voice sounding painfully loud against the pleasant quietness of night.

I doubt she's just gone to the bathroom. She must have left to meet up with her lover like I suspected she has, giving me a chance to prepare.

My muscles are tightly wound with energy as I stand, wincing at the familiar creak of the floorboards. If father wakes and finds me dressing for a party, I'll be in a world of trouble.

For a moment, there is only the birds singing outside and the gentle rustle of the breeze through the trees. The weight of Varian's body is hard to pull my attention off, especially when I feel my body drifting closer to his against my own volition."If you take this deal, it means we will see each other again," he says suddenly.I scowl at the barest hint of amusement in his expression. "Oh please, I never want to see you again in my life."He smirks, his hand shifting his hair back."Sure.""I'm done with Alpha's for the rest of my life," I exclaim assuredly. It's time for me to live a normal life.Without the mark embedded into my skin, I'll have the freedom to move on with a normal male, who lives a perfectly ordinary life. Will he be as naturally beautiful as Varian? Probably not. Will my body meltwhen I see his like it does when I look upon Varian's form? Unlikely. But will my life be content? Well, I hope so."You can't let

Dove povShamefully, getting through the night without jumping Varian's bones was not because of my own self-preservation and rational thought. In fact, Varian decided I had too much to drink and wasn't comfortable taking our night any further. I fell asleep pretty quickly, sprawled across the middle of his bed.As I wake, blinking my eyes open blearily, I realise Varian was right to stop our night from advancing too far. As I recall last night in order of events, staring up at the ceiling, some moments are nothing more than mist.I made way too many mistakes last night. Some I may not recover from.Chief among them, crawling into an Alpha's bed and sleeping in it like it belongs to me. I suppose I can't be blamed considering how soft the linen is, and how late at night it was when I came into the room.Slowly, I turn my head, feeling Varian stir next to me.He's rubbing his eyes, the sheets having fallen down to his waist. His top half is naked, and the moment I take in his muscled to

Dove povThis night has not gone to plan.I came to this party to ignore Varian, to enjoy my sisters wedding before moving on. I didn't come here to stand in front of Varian's bedroom door, knowing that once I cross the threshold, I'll make a decision I can't go back on.He answers my knock after a brief pause. For a moment we just stare at each other, a palpable tension sitting stagnant and unmoving between us.He hasn't been drinking tonight. I can see it in the clarity of his eyes, in the sharpness of them as they take in my strangely dressed state."I was beginning to think you weren't going to come," he murmurs, his surprise sprawled out across his face.I really should turn around and leave. If he weren't so handsome, this would be a lot easier. Even so, it's the depths of his eyes that get to me the most. More than the sharp lines of his face and perfectly mussed hair, even."May I come in?" I gesture behind him, at the guest room Eden and Ciella have supplied."Absolutely."He

Dove povOf all the possible mistakes I've stumbled into, this may be my biggest one.I don't know what I'm doing, but I've decided to banish all rational thought in favour of tipsy impulse. Even in spite of the wine now curdling unfavourably in my stomach.I'm at Claude's door because I'm sabotaging myself, and because Varian's request for me to come to his room has gotten into my head.I know what will happen if I go there, and it's the marks fault. So I stand at Claude's door, deciding that if I'm going to get the pleasure I'm craving, I'm going to get it in spite of the Alpha.I pound on the door before stepping back. If Claude has brought his date up here...I think I will collapse from embarrassment.I shift from foot to foot. Shamefully, I left my heels back in Dev and I's guest suite, and my dress is half undone at the back. I'm not going to be needing any of it for what I have planned tonight anyway.Mercifully, he's alone as he opens the door to his suite.A surprise flutters

Eden follows after him, her entire body is bright red as she climbs out, immediately smothering herself in a towel."Traitor!" I yell out to Dev.He pumps his fist at me in mock support before turning to start back off the hill to join the rest of the group."Come on Dove, we got this!" Ciella cheers shakily. I swim over to her and Varian, my joints so stiff from the cold they almost don't listen to my unconscious commands. At this point, we are the only three left. Ciella is so drunk I'm surprised she can stay afloat, although that's probably why she's managed to stay in so long. Varian looks entirely unbothered, barely treading water."He's an Alpha. He's stronger and faster and probably warmer than us," I grumble, scowling at him.He only smirks at me, his eyes tracing over the lines of my face. For a fleeting moment I feel the urg

Their cheeks are flushed bright red and they have to keep pausing for breaths between giggles. The lake sits as a backdrop behind them. Moonlight pools against the surface, undulating over every ripple. The cool of night raises small bumps on my arms, warning me that this dip into the water is going to be bitterly cold."So, we're all going to strip down and run into this lake," Ciella announces giddily, bracing her hand against her mates shoulder so she can peel her heels off her feet."Whoever can last the longest in the water wins!" Eden adds animatedly, the clapping of her hands cutting through the soft music still drifting from inside.Alissia cups her hands on their side of her mouth so her voice carries. "Wins what?"Dev leans into me, raising crossed fingers as his voice lowers. "Please say a shit ton of money."Ciella waves her hand dismiss
