Chapter 2

Penulis: Red Hot Fish
John froze, his frown deepening.

He wanted to say something, but was interrupted by Selena's phone ringing.

It was her boss, informing Selena that her proposal had issues and needed major revisions.

"The presentation is tomorrow! How can I possibly do an entire team's work by myself?"

Her only reply was the busy tone of a hung-up call.

Selena's face went pale, and she bit her lip hard.

John pulled out his car keys, grabbed her hand, and led her toward the car park.

Selena subconsciously glanced back at me, then quickly pulled her hand away.

"Don't worry about me. You're out on a date with Minnie. You two go have fun. Consider it my loss this time. I'll definitely get my revenge next time."

John ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

"I'm not doing this for you. I just don't want to win unfairly. You spent over half a month on your proposal, you can't just give up. Minnie would understand."

They both looked at me, waiting for me to give my consent.

After all, in the last five years, I'd let countless dates fall through and watched them walk away together time and again.

My shattered heart still throbbed with lingering pain.

I curled my lips and stated calmly, "If I say no, will you stay?"

My only answer was their silence.

With that, the last bit of unrealistic expectations I had disappeared.

"Just kidding. Be careful on the road."

Minnie opened the passenger seat door with familiarity and slid in.

The space was just right for her. When I sat in that seat, I always had to squeeze myself in.

John reached over to buckle her seatbelt, but she stopped him with a hand.

I pretended not to see and waved them goodbye, suppressing the bitterness in my heart.

After John left, I lost all interest in staying out.

I pulled out my phone to grab a ride, only to find there were 78 people ahead of me in line.

During the two-hour wait, a sudden thunderstorm broke out.

The crowd swarmed to the bus stop to shelter from the rain, anxiously waiting for it to clear.

"I wish the rain would last longer, just a little longer. That way, I'd get to stay with you a little longer."

I glanced at the speaker. It was a girl who was with a boy. They were, presumably, a young couple.

They were probably still in school, their youthful faces beaming with happiness.

The girl and boy huddled under the same oversized jacket, just like John and I once did.

Back then, he'd always laugh at me for being silly, knowing it would rain but never bringing an umbrella.

I'd pout and complain that he wasn't romantic at all. I ordered him to cherish every second he spent with me.

I thought that sharing rainy moments together would keep us closer

But the reality was, the rain would always stop, and people would always part ways.

After I got into my ride, I sneezed.

I was drenched from the rain, and the air conditioning in the car was blasting, making me shiver uncontrollably.

The driver handed me a towel, but his greasy eyes kept darting around in the rearview mirror.

For this date, I'd specially styled my hair and bought a new short skirt.

But now, everything was soaking wet and clinging to my body, making me feel terribly uncomfortable.

Alarm bells rang in my head, and I immediately dialed my emergency contact.

I called three times in a row, but John didn't pick up.

When I called Selena, however, she picked up almost immediately.

Her tone was gentle, and she spoke with a smile.

"Minnie, what's wrong?"

Just as I was about to speak, I heard John's voice from her end.

"Selena, you wouldn't let me answer my phone just now, but now you're the one slacking off. The milk tea I ordered for you is here. It's low-calorie, so drink up."

Selena playfully chided him for a bit, then whispered to me, complaining, "Your boyfriend is such a nag. He loves to control everything I do. It's so annoying. Only you can put up with him. Okay, I gotta get back to work."

I clutched my phone tightly, my knuckles turning white from the tension.

By sheer accident, I'd somehow dialed the customer service hotline for the ride-hailing app.

As soon as the driver received the platform's warning message, he immediately straightened up.

But I didn't dare stay any longer, so I hastily got out of the car.

I walked home, and my high heels chafed my heels raw.

Blood dripped onto the floor, but I couldn't care less. My vision went black, and I collapsed onto the couch.

John grabbed my hand, sounding reluctant."I'm not leaving. Selena, I have no feelings for you. The woman I like is Minnie. If you want the project, take it. I don't care anymore."I raised an eyebrow, noncommittal.John had worked overtime for more than half a year for this project. He was actually giving up at the last hurdle.Selena was furious and spat out a threat."You'll regret this."The call ended, and it was just the two of us in the apartment again. This was the first time in five years John had sided with me.But it was too little too late.I gently pulled my hand away."John, you don't actually like me. You're just not used to not having me in your life. After you go home, you'll slowly get used to life without me. You'll meet someone better. Maybe it's Selena, maybe it's someone else. It just won't be me anymore. I'm going to live my own life from now on."John walked out the door, looking utterly dejected. My neighbor and I shared the freshly made Thai curry

My hand didn't even pause from chopping ingredients.John thought I hadn't heard and stepped a little closer. His 6' 3" frame huddled beside me like an abandoned pet.He stared at me with a hurt expression, as if I was the one who did something wrong."We had a little misunderstanding, that's all. We can resolve it. You clearly love me very much, so how can you just leave me like that?"He tugged gently at the corner of my clothes.I had relented before, more than once.I thought I was overreacting, that I was too petty.I even went to see a therapist once. The first thing I said after sitting down was, "I feel so stupid and useless."If I wasn't stupid, John would like me more.If I wasn't useless, John wouldn't keep leaving me for Selena, time and again.Countless times, I'd pull at my hair and cry in front of the mirror. But now, I wouldn't cry for John anymore. After leaving him, I realized it wasn't rainy outside at all."John, we're not breaking up just because I f

After experiencing some vomiting and diarrhea, I went to get some medicine. The doctor said it was probably because of the sudden change in diet and environment.Going to the clinic by myself was something I was quite used to.After taking the medicine and getting a good night's sleep, I felt brand new.Old folks always say, good weather brings a good mood.I found that to be true, as I spent the transition period busy with various things.I looked for a place to live, moved into my new home, and scavenged for second-hand furniture to decorate my apartmentIn my spare time, I baked some cakes to share with my new neighbors.Life without John wasn't as sad or as painful as I had imagined.I got a new phone, and my old one became a backup. If not for the low battery, I would have almost forgotten about it.As soon as I plugged it in, t

John got drunk and passed out on the couch. The shawl I used to wear was casually tossed on the couch. He hugged the shawl to his chest, slowly losing strength. He fell asleep and had a dream. In his dream, he was back in high school. After the mock exam results came out, everyone gathered to check the scores. This time, the first place went to Selena. He was 1.5 points short, ranking second.Selena swaggered past him, leaving him with a "loser."'So I'm a defeated opponent, huh? How interesting.'John looked down and saw the third place. It was Minnie, only half a point behind him. When did Minnie's grades get so good?John looked around and found Minnie catching up on sleep at her desk. Her face was flushed from sleep, and a bit of ink was smudged on her nose.John found it cute and reached out to wipe it off for her.But when his hand was halfway there, she suddenly woke up.Minnie covered her face and recoiled in surprise.John awkwardly withdrew his hand and poin

John couldn't believe his ears.He called me only to find himself blocked. The last texts he'd sent me were the texts on that day he questioned me.He followed up with a few more questions after that, such as:"Are you stalking us?""Minnie, what exactly do you want?"And also, "Never mind, let's both calm down and think things through."John couldn't understand why his idea of "calming down" was different from mine.I was supposed to go back to him after calming down, not jet off to some foreign country without a word.John went to Selena's place with the bouquet of roses. When Selena opened the door, she was a little surprised. She raised her eyebrows, her tone full of provocation."Is this your attempt to make peace? I'd advise you to save it. The project this time is mine for sure."John cut off Selena before she could finish."Did you know Minnie went abroad?"Selena looked stunned for a moment."I have no idea. She hasn't contacted me for days."John's mind went b

John left in such a hurry he didn't notice the car's Bluetooth was still on.I heard him panting as he rushed upstairs. The plastic bag rustled, filled with medicine. He knocked on Selena's door.Selena's eyes lit up when she saw him. Then, she glanced behind him."Where's Minnie?"John suddenly realized that I was still in the car.He pursed his lips and pulled out the ointment."She didn't want to come up here, so she told me to come check on you. How can you sprain your ankle walking downstairs? You're so clumsy."For the first time, Selena didn't argue back. She remained silent, letting John apply the medicine.John's fingers paused, but he didn't say anything else. The Bluetooth connection cut out due to signal loss.My hand, which had been resting on the doorknob, retracted. After sweating so much, my mind became surprisingly clear.I informed my manager that I was willing to go overseas."This is so sudden.
